Ad hoc and sensor networks : theory and applications par Cordeiro, Carlos de Morais. Publication : [S.l.] World Scientific Publishing Company 2011 . 664 p. , This book provides a comprehensive yet easy coverage of ad hoc and sensor networks and fills the gap of existing literature in this growing field. It emphasizes that there is a major interdependence among various layers of the network protocol stack. Contrary to wired or even one-hop cellular networks, the lack of a fixed infrastructure, the inherent mobility, the wireless channel, and the underlying routing mechanism by ad hoc and sensor networks introduce a number of technological challenges that are difficult to address within the boundaries of a single protocol layer. All existing textbooks on the subject often focus on a specific aspect of the technology, and fail to provide critical insights on cross-layer interdependencies. To fully understand these intriguing networks, one need to grasp specific solutions individually, and also the many interdependencies and cross-layer interactions. 24 cm. Compressibility of ultra-soft soil par Bo, Myint Win. Publication : Hackensack, N.J. World Scientific Publishing Company 2008 . 287 p. , The formation of an alluvial clay deposit normally goes through sedimentation and consolidation. While the bottom portion is undergoing self-weight consolidation, sedimentation continues to take place at the top. However, the compression behavior of such deposits upon loading is not well understood. This book describes the compression behavior of ultra-soft soil upon additional load application. Various types of laboratory compression tests suitable for this type of soil are discussed, such as tests using small- and large-scale consolidometers, hydraulic Rowe cells under different drainage conditions, constant rate of loading and constant rate of strain tests. It also explains how to determine the transition point, which differentiates the two distinct behaviors between slurry state and soil state deformation. Methods to determine the compression indices and coefficients of consolidation at different stress ranges, which are required for the prediction of magnitude of settlement and time rate of settlement, are developed. An equation for predicting settlement of ultra-soft soil in both the slurry and soil stages is elaborated upon. These proposed methods of characterization or analyses -- which are validated against published data, laboratory measurements and a case study -- serve as useful tools for designing and constructing embankments and for carrying out land reclamation on ultra-soft soil. Contents: Sedimentation and Consolidation; Models and Analogy; Characterization of Physical Properties and Mineralogy of the Soil; Compression Tests with Large Scale Consolidometer; Compression Test on Slurry with Small-Scale Consolidometer; Compression Tests on Ultra-Soft Soil with Hydraulic Consolidation Cell; Continuous Loading Tests on Ultra-Soft Soil; Constant Rate of Strain Test on Ultra-Soft Soil; Verification of Proposed Formulae and Models with Laboratory Measurements; Case Study. 24 cm. Global Transversality, Resonance And Chaotic Dynamics par Luo,, Albert C J. Publication : [S.l.] World Scientific Publishing Company, 2008 . 460 p. , This unique book presents a different point of view on the fundamental theory of global transversality, resonance and chaotic dynamics in n-dimensional nonlinear dynamic systems. The methodology and techniques presented in this book are applicable to nonlinear dynamical systems in general. This book provides useful tools for analytical and numerical predictions of chaos in nonlinear Hamiltonian and dissipative systems. All theoretical results are strictly proved. However, the ideas presented in this book are less formal and rigorous in an informal and lively manner. The author hopes the initial ideas may give some inspirations in the field of nonlinear dynamics. With physical concepts, the author also used the simple, mathematical language to write this book. Therefore, this book is very readable, which can be either a textbook for senior undergraduate and graduate students or a reference book for researches in nonlinear dynamics. Transport in multilayered nanostructures : the dynamical mean-field theory approach par Freericks,, James K. Publication : [S.l.] World Scientific Publishing Company 2006 . 344 p. , This novel book is the first comprehensive text on Dynamical Mean-Field Theory (DMFT), which has emerged over the past two decades as one of the most powerful new developments in many-body physics. Written by one of the key researchers in the field, the volume develops the formalism of many-body Green's functions using the equation of motion approach, which requires an undergraduate solid state physics course and a graduate quantum mechanics course as prerequisites. The DMFT is applied to study transport in multilayered nanostructures, which is likely to be one of the most prominent applications of nanotechnology in the coming years. The text is modern in scope focusing on exact numerical methods rather than the perturbation theory. Formalism is developed first for the bulk and then for the inhomogeneous multilayered systems. The science behind the metal-insulator transition, electronic charge reconstruction, and superconductivity are thoroughly described. The book covers complete derivations and emphasizes how to carry out numerical calculations, including discussions of parallel programing algorithms. Detailed descriptions of the crossover from tunneling to thermally activated transport, of the properties of Josephson junctions with barriers tuned near the metal-insulator transition, and of thermoelectric coolers and power generators are provided as applications of the theory. 23 cm. Tundish technology for clean steel production par Sahai, Yogeshwar. Publication : [S.l.] World Scientific Publishing Company 2007 . 328 p. , Continuous casting of steel has become a widely used process and an important step in steel production. The worldwide share of continuously cast steel has increased significantly in the last 25 years or so. However, concurrent with this increase in production levels are stringent quality requirements that have become crucial in the face of progressively increasing machine throughputs and larger product dimensions. As a result, steel cleanliness and strict composition control are now the primary concern of steelmakers. The tundish is the last metallurgical vessel through which molten metal flows before solidifying in the continuous casting mold. During the transfer of metal through the tundish, molten steel interacts with refractories, slag, and the atmosphere. Thus, the proper design and operation of a tundish are important for delivering steel of strict composition and quality. This pioneering book is the first of its kind to cover all aspects of tundish technology, ranging from fundamental aspects and theory necessary for understanding the basic concepts of tundish operations to operational aspects of the tundish. Written by internationally recognized experts in continuous casting technology in general and tundish technology in particular, this book is sufficiently fundamental to serve as a graduate-level textbook on process metallurgy or as an important reference for metallurgical researchers; at the same time, it is comprehensive enough to contribute to the understanding of scientists and engineers engaged in research and development in the steel industry. Contents: Non-Metallic Inclusions; Review of Fluid Flow and Turbulence; Fluid Flow Characterization; Modeling of Melt Flow; Tundish Operation; Melt Temperature Control; Recent, Emerging, and Novel Technologies. 23 cm. Wave propagation for train-induced vibrations a finite/infinite element approach par Yang,, Y. B. Publication : [S.l.] World Scientific Publishing Company 2009 . 492 p. , For buildings and factories located near railway or subway lines, the vibrations caused by the moving trains, especially at high speeds, may be annoying to the residents or detrimental to the high-precision production lines. However, there is a lack of simple and efficient tools for dealing with the kind of environmental vibrations, concerning simulation of the radiation of infinite boundaries; irregularities in soils, buildings and wave barriers; and dynamic properties of the moving vehicles. This book is intended to fill such a gap. Compared with the boundary element method (BEM) for solving the half-space problems, the finite/infinite element method (FIEM) presented in this book has the following advantages: It requires less effort in formulation and computation. It can be directly incorporated in an existing FEM analysis program. It is capable of simulating the irregularities in buildings, soils and tunnels. It can be used to evaluate the efficiency of various wave barriers for vibration reduction. The methodology presented in the book can be adopted to analyze the vibrations caused by road traffic as well. 23 cm.
