Biology of the ubiquitous house sparrow : from genes to populations / par Anderson,, Ted R. Publication : [S.l.] : Oxford University Press, USA, 2006 . 560 p. ; , After the chicken, the House Sparrow is the most widely distributed bird species in the world, occurring on all continents except Antarctica and on most human-inhabited islands. Although its Latin name is Passer domesticus, it is certainly not domesticated. In fact, it is widely regarded as a pest species and is consequently not protected in most of its extensive range. This combination of ubiquity and minimal legal protection has contributed to its wide use in studies by avian biologists throughout the world. The purpose of this book is to review and summarize the results of these global studies on House Sparrows, and to provide a springboard for future studies on the species. House Sparrows have been used to study natural selection in introduced species, circadian rhythms, and the neuroendocrine control of the avian annual cycle. One current question of considerable interest concerns the catastrophic House Sparrow population declines in several urban centers in Europe. Is the House Sparrow a contemporary canary in the mine? Other topics of broad interest include the reproductive and flock-foraging strategies of sparrows, and sexual selection and the function of the male badge in the species. Anderson also explores the role of the House Sparrow in disease transmission to humans and their domesticated animals. 24 cm. Biostatistics, second edition : a guide to design, analysis and discovery. par Forthofer,, Ronald N. Publication : [S.l.] Academic Press 2006 . 528 p. , Today, mathematics, biology, medicine, and statistics are closing the interdisciplinary gap in an unprecedented way and many of the important unanswered questions now emerge at the interface of these disciplines. Now in its Second Edition, this user-friendly guide on biostatistics focuses on the proper use and interpretation of statistical methods. This textbook does not require extensive background in mathematics, making it user-friendly for all students in the public health sciences field. Instead of highlighting derivations of formulas, the authors provide rationales for the formulas, allowing students to grasp a better understanding of the link between biology and statistics. The material on life tables and survival analysis allows students to better understand the recent literature in the health field, particularly in the study of chronic disease treatment. Biostatistics now includes a companion website to demonstrate the different applications of computer packages for performing the various analyses presented in this text. * Includes access to a companion website with further examples and a full explanation of computer packages * Over 40% new material with modern real-life examples, exercises and references * New chapters on Logistic Regression; Analysis of Survey Data; and Study Designs * Introduces strategies for analyzing complex sample survey data * Written in a conversational style more accessible to students with real data. 27 cm. Biotechnology 101 / par Shmaefsky,, Brian Robert. Publication : [S.l.] : Greenwood Press, 2006 . 272 p. ; , What should the average person know about science? Because science is so central to life in the 21st century, science educators and other leaders of the scientific community believe that it is essential that everyone understand the basic concepts of the most vital and far-reaching disciplines. Biotechnology 101 does exactly that. This accessible volume provides readers - whether students new to the field or just interested members of the lay public - with the essential ideas of biotechnology using a minimum of jargon and mathematics. Concepts are introduced in a progressive order so that more complicated ideas build on simpler ones, and each is discussed in small, bite-sized segments so that they can be more easily understood. Biotechnology 101 provides an introduction to all the areas of biotechnology, covering such topics as: BLA History of the Science Behind Biotechnology BLThe Tools of Biotechnology BLBiotechnology Innovations BLPrincipal people of Biotechnology BLBiotechnology in Everyday Life BLEthical Issues of Biotechnology This short volume will enable students and lay people to understand the basics of one of the most important scientific fields of endeavor for the future. 24 cm. Biotechnology : applying the genetic revolution par Clark, David P. Publication : [S.l.] Academic Cell 2008 . 768 p. , Unlike most biotechnology textbooks, Dr. David P. Clark's Biotechnology approaches modern biotechnology from a molecular basis, which grew out of the increasing biochemical understanding of physiology. Using straightforward, less-technical jargon, Clark manages to introduce each chapter with a basic concept that ultimately evolves into a more specific detailed principle. This up-to-date text covers a wide realm of topics, including forensics and bioethics, using colorful illustrations and concise applications. This book will help readers understand molecular biotechnology as a scientific discipline, how the research in this area is conducted, and how this technology may impact the future. Up-to-date text focuses on modern biotechnology with a molecular foundation Basic concepts followed by more detailed, specific applications Clear, color illustrations of key topics and concepts Clearly written without overly technical jargon or complicated examples. 29 cm.
