˜The œmaillard reaction : chemistry, biology and implications / par Nursten, H.E. Publication : [S.l.] : Royal Society of Chemistry, 2005 . 214 p. ; , Research in the field of the Maillard reaction has developed rapidly in recent years, not only as a result of the application of improved analytical techniques but also the realisation that that the Maillard reaction plays an important role in some human diseases and in the ageing process. The Maillard Reaction : Chemistry, Biochemistry and Implications provides a comprehensive treatise on the Maillard reaction. This single-author volume covers all aspects of the Maillard reaction in a uniform, co-ordinated, and up-to-date manner. The book encompasses: the chemistry of non-enzymic browning; recent advances; colour formation in non-enzymic browning; flavour and off-flavour formation in non-enzymic browning; toxicological aspects; nutritional aspects; other physiological aspects; other consequences of technological significance; implications for other fields; non-enzymic browning due mainly to ascorbic acid; caramelisation; inhibition of non-enzymic browning in foods; and inhibition of the Maillard reaction in vivo. 24 cm. A guinea pig's history of biology / par Endersby, Jim. Publication : [S.l.]: Harvard University Press, 2007 . 499 pages; , "Endless forms most beautiful and most wonderful have been, and are being, evolved," Darwin famously concluded The Origin of Species , and for confirmation we look to...the guinea pig? How this curious creature and others as humble (and as fast-breeding) have helped unlock the mystery of inheritance is the unlikely story Jim Endersby tells in this book. Biology today promises everything from better foods or cures for common diseases to the alarming prospect of redesigning life itself. Looking at the organisms that have made all this possible gives us a new way of understanding how we got here--and perhaps of thinking about where we're going. Instead of a history of which great scientists had which great ideas, this story of passionflowers and hawkweeds, of zebra fish and viruses, offers a bird's (or rodent's) eye view of the work that makes science possible. Mixing the celebrities of genetics, like the fruit fly, with forgotten players such as the evening primrose, the book follows the unfolding history of biological inheritance from Aristotle's search for the "universal, absolute truth of fishiness" to the apparently absurd speculations of eighteenth-century natural philosophers to the spectacular findings of our day--which may prove to be the absurdities of tomorrow. The result is a quirky, enlightening, and thoroughly engaging perspective on the history of heredity and genetics, tracing the slow, uncertain path--complete with entertaining diversions and dead ends--that led us from the ancient world's understanding of inheritance to modern genetics. 24 cm. Artificial neural networks in biological and environmental analysis par Hanrahan, Grady. Publication : Boca Raton, FL CRC Press 2011 . xxii, 188 pages , "Drawing on the experience and knowledge of a practicing professional, this book provides a comprehensive introduction and practical guide to the development, optimization, and application of artificial neural networks (ANNs) in modern environmental and biological analysis. Based on our knowledge of the functioning human brain, ANNs serve as a modern paradigm for computing. Presenting basic principles of ANNs together with simulated biological and environmental data sets and real applications in the field, this volume helps scientists comprehend the power of the ANN model to explain physical concepts and demonstrate complex natural processes"--Provided by publisher. | "The cornerstones of research into prospective tools of artificial intelligence originate from knowledge of the functioning brain. Like most transforming scientific endeavors, this field-- once viewed with speculation and doubt--has had profound impacts in helping investigators elucidate complex biological, chemical, and environmental processes. Such efforts have been catalyzed by the upsurge in computational power and availability, with the co-evolution of software, algorithms, and methodologies contributing significantly to this momentum. Whether or not the computational power of such techniques is sufficient for the design and construction of truly intelligent neural systems is of continued debate. In writing Artificial Neural Networks in Biological and Environmental Analysis, my aim was to provide in-depth and timely perspectives on the fundamental, technological, and applied aspects of computational neural networks. By presenting basic principles of neural networks together with real applications in the field, I seek to stimulate communication and partnership among scientists in the fields as diverse as biology, chemistry, mathematics, medicine, and environmental science. This interdisciplinary discourse is essential not only for the success of independent and collaborative research and teaching programs, but also for the continued acquiescence of the use of neural network tools in scientific inquiry"--Provided by publisher. 25 cm. Bioenergetics 3 / par Nicholls,, David G. Publication : . 1 online resource (xviii, 297 pages [14] pages of plates) : , This new edition of Bioenergetics presents a clear and up-to-date explanation of the chemiosmotic theory and covers mitochondria, bacteria, and chloroplasts. It takes account of the many newly determined structures, such as ATP synthase and the two photosystems of photosynthesis, that provide molecular insight into chemiosmotic energy transduction. This edition includes additional color figures of protein structures and many newly drawn illustrations designed to enable the reader to grasp the fundamental insights that are derived from knowing the structure. Every chapter has been extensively revised and updated and a new chapter on the study of the bioenergetics of mitochondria in the intact cell is included to satisfy the enormous interest in this topic. Written for students and researchers alike, this book is the most current text on the chemiosmotic theory and membrane bioenergetics available. Key Features * Chapter on the study of bioenergetics of mitochondria in the intact cell * Appendix listing protein structure resources * Additional colour plates of protein structures * Many newly drawn illustrations * Website. Biology of the ubiquitous house sparrow : from genes to populations / par Anderson,, Ted R. Publication : [S.l.] : Oxford University Press, USA, 2006 . 560 p. ; , After the chicken, the House Sparrow is the most widely distributed bird species in the world, occurring on all continents except Antarctica and on most human-inhabited islands. Although its Latin name is Passer domesticus, it is certainly not domesticated. In fact, it is widely regarded as a pest species and is consequently not protected in most of its extensive range. This combination of ubiquity and minimal legal protection has contributed to its wide use in studies by avian biologists throughout the world. The purpose of this book is to review and summarize the results of these global studies on House Sparrows, and to provide a springboard for future studies on the species. House Sparrows have been used to study natural selection in introduced species, circadian rhythms, and the neuroendocrine control of the avian annual cycle. One current question of considerable interest concerns the catastrophic House Sparrow population declines in several urban centers in Europe. Is the House Sparrow a contemporary canary in the mine? Other topics of broad interest include the reproductive and flock-foraging strategies of sparrows, and sexual selection and the function of the male badge in the species. Anderson also explores the role of the House Sparrow in disease transmission to humans and their domesticated animals. 24 cm. Biotechnology 101 / par Shmaefsky,, Brian Robert. Publication : [S.l.] : Greenwood Press, 2006 . 272 p. ; , What should the average person know about science? Because science is so central to life in the 21st century, science educators and other leaders of the scientific community believe that it is essential that everyone understand the basic concepts of the most vital and far-reaching disciplines. Biotechnology 101 does exactly that. This accessible volume provides readers - whether students new to the field or just interested members of the lay public - with the essential ideas of biotechnology using a minimum of jargon and mathematics. Concepts are introduced in a progressive order so that more complicated ideas build on simpler ones, and each is discussed in small, bite-sized segments so that they can be more easily understood. Biotechnology 101 provides an introduction to all the areas of biotechnology, covering such topics as: BLA History of the Science Behind Biotechnology BLThe Tools of Biotechnology BLBiotechnology Innovations BLPrincipal people of Biotechnology BLBiotechnology in Everyday Life BLEthical Issues of Biotechnology This short volume will enable students and lay people to understand the basics of one of the most important scientific fields of endeavor for the future. 24 cm.
