Peroxiredoxin systems : structures and functions / par Flohé,, Leopold. Publication : [S.l.] : Springer, 2007 . 410 p. ; , The peroxiredoxins represent an important emerging family of sulfhydryl-linked antioxidant proteins, apparently ubiquitously present in all known organisms. The antioxidant function of the peroxiredoxins complements that of other enzymic and non-enzymic systems within the cell. In addition, there is increasing evidence that the peroxiredoxins play a role in cell signalling, by controlling and/or sensing hydrogen peroxide and peroxynitrite levels. In this, the first book containing a broad survey on the peroxiredoxins, the editors succeeded to involve almost all groups that contributed significant insights into the emerging field. The diverse biological roles of the new protein family are discussed in the context of other antioxidant systems like those based on heme or selenium catalysis. Finally, related future perspectives, which range from antimicrobial therapy up to the understanding of human development and carcinogenesis, are highlighted. Specifically, the book will be of outstanding interest to researchers who want to understand how micro-organisms, plants and animals cope with oxidative stress and how such stress is recognized and linked to adaptive responses via redox regulation of cellular processes. 24 cm. Physical chemistry of polymer rheology / par Furukawa, Junji. Publication : [S.l.] : Springer, 2003 . 280 p. ; , Rheology is the science and technology that deals with the deformation of polymeric or plastic materials. In this monograph the field of polymer rheology is explained with emphasis on the chemical theory. The book provides basic information on rheology for nonspecialists and gives clear explanations of the various phenomena. The author has developed a new theory of thermodynamics and kinetics using a model of multi-size pseudo crosslinks that provides a comprehensive principle to show how links in chain molecules affect the melting temperatures and determine polymer properties such as viscoelasticity, melt viscosity and elastic and plastic behaviour of bulk polymers. The theory can be extended to include the strength of rubber and plastics, active fillers and adhesion, friction and abrasion. 24 cm. Single molecule chemistry and physics : an introduction / par Wang,, Chen. Publication : [S.l.] : Springer, 2006 . 303 p. ; , The characterization of individual molecules has been a scientifically attractive and challenging task for decades, and remains so today. New technological developments have facilitated great progress in our understanding of the structure and behavior of single atoms and molecules in various environments. This book provides an introduction to the most important experimental and theoretical methods for characterizing and imaging single molecules, including scanning tunnelling and atomic force microscopy of molecules at surfaces, fluorescence studies, near-field optical microscopy and Raman spectroscopy. It also elucidates newly discovered properties of single-molecular systems and their relevance to the fast growing field of nanotechnology. 24 cm. The theory of classes of groups / par Wenbin, Guo. Publication : [S.l.] : Springer, 2001 . 264 p. ; , This book gives a systematic introduction to the theory of classes of groups, including research subjects, major (recent) research achievements, and directions for future research. It clearly and concisely treats a wealth of topics, such as a brief introduction to the fundamental knowledge of group theory; the classical part of the theory of classes of groups covering mainly F-covering subgroups, F-projectors, F-injectors and F-normalisers; local formations; Schunck classes; Fitting classes; properties of local formations; formation constructions of finite groups and related applications; and the algebra of formations. Audience: This volume will be of interest to mathematicians involved in group theory and generalisations, algebras, order, lattices, ordered algebraic structures, general mathematical systems and the mathematics of physics and chemistry. 25 cm. Toxic plants dangerous to humans and animals / par Bruneton, Jean. Publication : [S.l.] : Lavoisier, 2000 . 545 p. ; , Physicians, pharmacists and veterinarians who deal with accidental plant ingestions on a daily basis are largely ill-prepared to manage such cases. Reliable information is therefore scarce. "Toxic Plants" seeks to meet this need. Part 1 lists the common causes of plant induced incidents and accidents in humans. The risks are described, in particular those inherent to herbal drugs. Plant identification and medical treatment are discussed , as well as the specifics of animal poisoning, paying special attention to pets. Part 2 is a detailed discussion of the plant species, most frequently implicated. It includes the circumstances of the intoxication, symptoms, proposed treatment, toxic doses, and also elements of diagnosis, toxin identification and toxic mechanisms. This book contains more than 1300 literature references and the most recent statistics. Four dozen botanical families are classified alphabetically with over 350 plant species including 100 plant monographs and numerous illustrations. This highly educational tool gives a complete picture of the toxic potential of higher plants. 25 cm.
