Shock waves & explosions par Sachdev, P.L. Publication : Boca Raton Chapman and Hall/CRC 2004 . 278 p. , Understanding the causes and effects of explosions is important to experts in a broad range of disciplines, including the military, industrial and environmental research, aeronautic engineering, and applied mathematics. Offering an introductory review of historic research, Shock Waves and Explosions brings analytic and computational methods to a wide audience in a clear and thorough way. Beginning with an overview of the research on combustion and gas dynamics in the 1970s and 1980s, the author brings you up to date by covering modeling techniques and asymptotic and perturbative methods and ending with a chapter on computational methods. Most of the book deals with the mathematical analysis of explosions, but computational results are also included wherever they are available. Historical perspectives are provided on the advent of nonlinear science, as well as on the mathematical study of the blast wave phenomenon, both when visualized as a point explosion and when simulated as the expansion of a high-pressure gas. This volume clearly reveals the ingenuity of the human mind to conceptualize, model, and mathematically analyze highly complicated nonlinear phenomena such as nuclear explosions. It presents a solid foundation of knowledge that encourages further research and original ideas. 24 cm. Soliton equations and hamiltonian systems par Dickey, L. A. Publication : [S.l.] World Scientific Pub Co Inc 2003 . 408 p. , The theory of soliton equations and integrable systems has developed rapidly during the last 30 years with numerous applications in mechanics and physics. For a long time, books in this field have not been written but the flood of papers was overwhelming: many hundreds, maybe thousands of them. All this output followed one single work by Gardner, Green, Kruskal, and Mizura on the Korteweg-de Vries equation (KdV), which had seemed to be merely an unassuming equation of mathematical physics describing waves in shallow water. Besides its obvious practical use, this theory is attractive also because it satisfies the aesthetic need in a beautiful formula which is so inherent to mathematics. The second edition is up-to-date and differs from the first one considerably. One third of the book is completely new and the rest is refreshed and edited. 24 cm. Spectral problems associated with corner singularities of solutions to elliptic equations par Kozlov,, V. A. Publication : [S.l.] American Mathematical Society 2000 . 436 p. , This book focuses on the analysis of eigenvalues and eigenfunctions that describe singularities of solutions to elliptic boundary value problems in domains with corners and edges. The authors treat both classical problems of mathematical physics and general elliptic boundary value problems. The volume is divided into two parts: The first is devoted to the power-logarithmic singularities of solutions to classical boundary value problems of mathematical physics. The second deals with similar singularities for higher order elliptic equations and systems. Chapter 1 collects basic facts concerning operator pencils acting in a pair of Hilbert spaces. Related properties of ordinary differential equations with constant operator coefficients are discussed and connections with the theory of general elliptic boundary value problems in domains with conic vertices are outlined. New results are presented. Chapter 2 treats the Laplace operator as a starting point and a model for the subsequent study of angular and conic singularities of solutions. Chapter 3 considers the Dirichlet boundary condition beginning with the plane case and turning to the space problems. Chapter 4 investigates some mixed boundary conditions. The Stokes system is discussed in Chapters 5 and 6, and Chapter 7 concludes with the Dirichlet problem for the polyharmonic operator. Chapter 8 studies the Dirichlet problem for general elliptic differential equations of order $2m$ in an angle. In Chapter 9, an asymptotic formula for the distribution of eigenvalues of operator pencils corresponding to general elliptic boundary value problems in an angle is obtained. Chapters 10 and 11 discuss the Dirichlet problem for elliptic systems of differential equations of order $2$ in an $n$-dimensional cone. Chapter 12 studies the Neumann problem for general elliptic systems, in particular with eigenvalues of the corresponding operator pencil in the strip $mid {Re} lambda - m + /2n mid leq 1/2$. It is shown that only integer numbers contained in this strip are eigenvalues. Applications are placed within chapter introductions and as special sections at the end of chapters. Prerequisites include standard PDE and functional analysis courses. 26 cm. Date : 2000 Disponibilité : Exemplaires disponibles: La bibliothèque des Sciences Exactes et Naturelles (1),

Stochastic analysis on manifolds par Hsu, Elton P. Publication : [S.l.] American Mathematical Society 2002 . 281 p. , Probability theory has become a convenient language and a useful tool in many areas of modern analysis. The main purpose of this book is to explore part of this connection concerning the relations between Brownian motion on a manifold and analytical aspects of differential geometry. A dominant theme of the book is the probabilistic interpretation of the curvature of a manifold. The book begins with a brief review of stochastic differential equations on Euclidean space. After presenting the basics of stochastic analysis on manifolds, the author introduces Brownian motion on a Riemannian manifold and studies the effect of curvature on its behavior. He then applies Brownian motion to geometric problems and vice versa, using many well-known examples, e.g., short-time behavior of the heat kernel on a manifold and probabilistic proofs of the Gauss-Bonnet-Chern theorem and the Atiyah-Singer index theorem for Dirac operators. The book concludes with an introduction to stochastic analysis on the path space over a Riemannian manifold. 27 cm. Stochastic differential equations : an introduction with applications / par k̲sendal,, Bernt. Publication : [S.l.] : Springer, 2003 . 374 p. ; , This book gives an introduction to the basic theory of stochastic calculus and its applications. Examples are given throughout the text, in order to motivate and illustrate the theory and show its importance for many applications in e.g. economics, biology and physics. The basic idea of the presentation is to start from some basic results (without proofs) of the easier cases and develop the theory from there, and to concentrate on the proofs of the easier case (which nevertheless are often sufficiently general for many purposes) in order to be able to reach quickly the parts of the theory which is most important for the applications. For the 6th edition the author has added further exercises and, for the first time, solutions to many of the exercises are provided. 24 cm. Stochastic partial differential equations par Chow,, Pao-Liu. Publication : [S.l.] Chapman and Hall/CRC 2007 . 281 p. , As a relatively new area in mathematics, stochastic partial differential equations (PDEs) are still at a tender age and have not yet received much attention in the mathematical community. Filling the void of an introductory text in the field, Stochastic Partial Differential Equations introduces PDEs to students familiar with basic probability theory and It's equations, highlighting several computational and analytical techniques. Without assuming specific knowledge of PDEs, the text includes many challenging problems in stochastic analysis and treats stochastic PDEs in a practical way. The author first brings the subject back to its root in classical concrete problems. He then discusses a unified theory of stochastic evolution equations and describes a few applied problems, including the random vibration of a nonlinear elastic beam and invariant measures for stochastic Navier-Stokes equations. The book concludes by pointing out the connection of stochastic PDEs to infinite-dimensional stochastic analysis. By thoroughly covering the concepts and applications of stochastic PDEs at an introductory level, this text provides a guide to current research topics and lays the groundwork for further stud 24 cm.
