The Augmented spherical wave method a comprehensive treatment par Eyert,, Volker. Publication : New York Springer 2007 . 330 p. , The Augmented Spherical Wave (ASW) method is one of the powerful approaches to handle the requirement of finite basis sets in DFT calculations. It is particularly suited for the calculation of elastic properties and phonon spectra of solid-state materials. This book addresses all those who want to learn about methods for electronic structure calculations and the ASW method in particular. 24 cm. Tutorials in mathematical biosciences I : mathematical neuroscience / par Borisyuk, Alla. Publication : [S.l.] : Springer, 2005 . 170 p. ; , This volume introduces some basic theories on computational neuroscience. Chapter 1 is a brief introduction to neurons, tailored to the subsequent chapters. Chapter 2 is a self-contained introduction to dynamical systems and the bifurcation theory, oriented toward neuronal dynamics. The theory is illustrated with a model of Parkinson's disease. Chapter 3 reviews the theory of coupled neural oscillators observed ghroughout the nervous systems at all levels; it describes how oscillations arise, what pattern they take, and how they depend on excitory of inhibitory synaptic connections. Chapter 4 specializes to one particular neuronal system, namely, the auditory system. It includes a self-contained introduction, from the anatomy and physiology of the inner ear to the neuronal network which connects the hair cells to the cortex, and describes various models of subsystems. 24 cm. Variational methods in some shape optimization problems par Bucur,, Dorin. Publication : [S.l.] Edizioni della Normale 2002 . 217 p. , The study of shape optimization problems is a very wide field, both classical, as the isoperimetric problem and Newton problem of the best aerodynamical shape show, and modern, for all the recent results obtained in the last two, three decades. The fascinating feature is that the competing objects are shapes, i.e. domains of Rn, instead of functions, as usually occurs in problems of calculus of variations. This constraint often produces additional difficulties that lead to a lack of existence of a solution and the introduction of suitable relaxed formulations of the problem. However, in a few cases an optimal solution exists, due to the special form of the cost functional and to the geometrical restriction on the class of competing domains. This volume collects the lecture notes of two courses given in the academic year 2000/01 by the authors at the University of Pisa and at the Scuola Normale Superiore respectively. The courses were mainly addressed to Ph. D. students and required a background in the topics in functional analysis that are usually taught in undergraduate courses. 24 cm. Volterra integral and differentialequations par Burton, Ted A. Publication : [S.l.] Elsevier Science 2005 . 353 p. , Most mathematicians, engineers, and many other scientists are well-acquainted with theory and application of ordinary differential equations. This book seeks to present Volterra integral and functional differential equations in that same framwork, allowing the readers to parlay their knowledge of ordinary differential equations into theory and application of the more general problems. Thus, the presentation starts slowly with very familiar concepts and shows how these are generalized in a natural way to problems involving a memory. Liapunov's direct method is gently introduced and applied to many particular examples in ordinary differential equations, Volterra integro-differential equations, and functional differential equations. By Chapter 7 the momentum has built until we are looking at problems on the frontier. Chapter 7 is entirely new, dealing with fundamental problems of the resolvent, Floquet theory, and total stability. Chapter 8 presents a solid foundation for the theory of functional differential equations. Many recent results on stability and periodic solutions of functional differential equations are given and unsolved problems are stated. Key Features: - Smooth transition from ordinary differential equations to integral and functional differential equations. - Unification of the theories, methods, and applications of ordinary and functional differential equations. - Large collection of examples of Liapunov functions. - Description of the history of stability theory leading up to unsolved problems. - Applications of the resolvent to stability and periodic problems. 1. Wave propagation and time reversal in randomly layered media / par Fouque, Jean-Pierre. Publication : [S.l.] : Springer, 2007 . 612 p. ; , Wave propagation in random media is an interdisciplinary field that has emerged from the need in physics and engineering to model and analyze wave energy transport in complex environments. This book gives a systematic and self-contained presentation of wave propagation in randomly layered media using the asymptotic theory of ordinary differential equations with random coefficients. The first half of the book gives a detailed treatment of wave reflection and transmission in one-dimensional random media, after introducing gradually the tools from partial differential equations and probability theory that are needed for the analysis. The second half of the book presents wave propagation in three-dimensional randomly layered media along with several applications, primarily involving time reversal. Many new results are presented here for the first time. 24 cm. Date : 2007 Disponibilité : Exemplaires disponibles: La bibliothèque des Sciences Exactes et Naturelles (1),
