Nanoparticle assemblies and superstructures   Publication : [S.l.] CRC Press 2005 . 648 p. , Cubes, triangular prisms, nano-acorn, nano-centipedes, nanoshells, nano-whiskers. . . .  Now that we can create nanoparticles in a wide variety of shapes and morphologies, comes the next challenge: finding ways to organize this collection of particles into larger and more complex systems.  Nanoparticle Assemblies and Superstructures , edited by pioneer of nanoparticle self-organization Nicholas A. Kotov, employs three critical questions to provide a framework of open-ended inquiry: What are the methods of organization of nanocolloids in more complex structures? What kind of structures do we need? What are the new properties appearing in nanocolloid superstructures? Pulling together a collection of contributors unmatched in both their expertise and enthusiasm, Kotov presents what he refers to as a snapshot of nanoassembly work in progress. The first section of this comprehensive volume provides background through an assessment of the current status of nanoparticle assembly development and the requirements for different applications of organized nanomaterials. The middle chapters explore the changes that occur in various properties of individual particles when they are brought together to form agglomerates and simple assemblies. In the final section, a number of top scientists describe various methods for organizing particles in complex nanostructured superstructures. These include techniques involving biological ligands and force fields, as well as methods based on self-organization. This remarkably prescient text upholds Kotov’s belief that the research on organization of nanoparticles and other nanostructures, will most certainly uncover a wealth of “interesting discoveries and surprising phenomena.” Nicholas A. Kotov has received several state, national, and international awards for his research on nanomaterials, including the Mendeleev Stipend, the Humboldt Fellowship, and the CAREER award. 24 cm. The K P method : electronic properties of semiconductors par Voon,, Lok C. Lew Yan. Publication : [S.l.] Springer 2009 . 445 p. , This book presents a detailed exposition of the formalism and application of k.p theory for both bulk and nanostructured semiconductors. For bulk crystals, this is the first time all the major techniques for deriving the most popular Hamiltonians have been provided in one place. For nanostructures, this is the first time the Burt-Foreman theory has been made accessible. Thus, the reader will gain a clear understanding of the k.p method, will have an explicit listing of the various Hamiltonians in a consistent notation for their use, and a set of representative results. In addition, the reader can derive an excellent understanding of the electronic structure of semiconductors. 24 cm. Thermodynamics, gibbs method and statistical physics of electron gases par Askerov, Bahram M. Publication : [S.l.] Springer 2010 . 374 p. , This book deals with theoretical thermodynamics and the statistical physics of electron and particle gases. While treating the laws of thermodynamics from both classical and quantum theoretical viewpoints, it posits that the basis of the statistical theory of macroscopic properties of a system is the microcanonical distribution of isolated systems, from which all canonical distributions stem. To calculate the free energy, the Gibbs method is applied to ideal and non-ideal gases, and also to a crystalline solid. Considerable attention is paid to the Fermi-Dirac and Bose-Einstein quantum statistics and its application to different quantum gases, and electron gas in both metals and semiconductors is considered in a nonequilibrium state.A separate chapter treats the statistical theory of thermodynamic properties of an electron gas in a quantizing magnetic field. 24 cm. Thoracic vein arrhythmias Mechanisms and treatment   Publication : [S.l.] Blackwell Futura 2004 . xv, 352 p. , In 1998 Professor Haïssaguerre and his colleagues made the initial observation in patients that triggering foci in or around the pulmonary veins initiate some types of atrial fibrillation. Since then it has become clear that atrial fibrillation and other atrial tachyarrhythmias can be initiated (and possibly maintained) by triggering foci in any of the thoracic veins. This concept is now one of the most current topics in electrophysiology, and while it is a topic of frequent discussion in the major cardiology and electrophysiology journals, Thoracic Vein Arrhythmias: Mechanisms and Treatment is the first state-of-the art multi-authored textbook that integrates the advances made in this rapidly developing new area of cardiac arrhythmias for the global community. Edited by Drs. Shih-Ann Chen, Michel Haïssaguerre, and Douglas P. Zipes, who are at the forefront of advances in this field of cardiology, and with contributions from authors representing an international array of authorities in their individual fields, this text will be an invaluable reference to students, basic scientists, and clinicians with an interest in any aspect of cardiac arrhythmia. First textbook to provide comprehensive, critical and insightful review by leading experts in the exciting field of thoracic vein arrhythmias. Contains review of the current status of thoracic vein arrhythmias, and speculation on how the new findings will impact on treatment of cardiac arrhythmias. The chapters outline how progress is being made on several fronts ranging from basic mechanisms to invasive treatment for thoracic vein arrhythmias. 24 cm.
