A Geospatial framework for the coastal zone : national needs for coastal mapping and charting / par Charting,, Committee on National Needs for Coastal Mapping and. Publication : [S.l.] : National Academies Press, 2004 . 168 p. ; , The coastal zone is of enormous importance to the well-being of the nation, as our lives and economy are inextricably linked to the features and activities that occur within this dynamic region. In order to understand and address the effects of natural and anthropogenic forces in the coastal zone, a holistic multidisciplinary framework is required to account for the interconnectivity of processes within the system. The foundation of this framework is accurate geospatial information - information that is depicted on maps and charts. "A Geospatial Framework for the Coastal Zone: National Needs" identifies and suggests mechanisms for addressing national needs for spatial information in the coastal zone. It identifies high priority needs, evaluates the potential for meeting those needs based on the current level of effort, and suggests steps to increase collaboration and ensure that the nation's need for spatial information in the coastal zone is met in an efficient and timely manner. 23 cm. Direct and indirect human contributions to terrestrial carbon fluxes : a workshop summary / par Johnson,, Rob Coppock and Stephanie. Publication : [S.l.] : National Academies Press, 2004 . 92 p. ; , Human-induced climate change is an important environmental issue worldwide, as scientific studies increasingly demonstrate that human activities are changing the Earth's climate. Even if dramatic reductions in emissions were made today, some human-induced changes are likely to persist beyond the 21st century. The Kyoto Protocol calls for emissions reporting that separates out management-induced changes in greenhouse gases from those changes caused by indirect human effects (e.g., carbon dioxide fertilization, nitrogen deposition, or precipitation changes), natural effects, and past practices on forested agricultural lands. This book summarizes a September 2003 workshop where leaders from academia, government and industry came together to discuss the current state of scientific understanding on quantifying direct human-induced change in terrestrial carbon stocks and related changes in greenhouse gas emissions and distinguishing these changes from those caused by indirect and natural effects. 23 cm. Urban forest acoustics par Bucur, Voichita. Publication : [S.l.] Springer 2006 . 181 p. , Trees can reduce noise by sound reflection and absorption. Investigating noise control in urban environments, Voichita Bucur's new book Urban Forest Acoustics covers the following topics: - dendrological characteristics of trees - factors affecting sound propagation in forest belts - equipment for in situ noise measurements - acoustical sensors for the measurement of tree characteristics - noise attenuation in situ due to the ground and scattering by trees, trunks, foliage, branches - protection against traffic noise from highways, railways, aircraft - relations between urban noise and trees, birds, and insects - fire control - economic aspects related to the value of urban trees. The book is of particular interest to those concerned with environmental management, noise control, and urban forestry. It is an invaluable source of information for environmental managers, foresters, acousticians, engineers, architects, scientists, and students. 24 cm.
