Groundwater fluxes across interfaces / par Science,, Committee on Hydrologic. Publication : [S.l.] : National Academies Press, 2004 . 100 p. ; , Estimates of groundwater recharge and discharge rates are needed at many different scales for many different purposes. These include such tasks as evaluating landslide risks, managing groundwater resources, locating nuclear waste repositories, and estimating global budgets of water and greenhouse gasses. "Groundwater Fluxes Across Interfaces" focuses on scientific challenges in: the spatial and temporal variability of recharge and discharge; how information at one scale can be used at another; and the effects of groundwater on climate and vice versa. 28 cm. Physical-chemical treatment of water and wastewater / par Sincero, Arcadio P. Publication : [S.l.] : CRC Press, 2003 . 856 p. ; , The books currently available on this subject contain some elements of physical-chemical treatment of water and wastewater but fall short of giving comprehensive and authoritative coverage. They contain some equations that are not substantiated, offering empirical data based on assumptions that are therefore difficult to comprehend. This text brings together the information previously scattered in several books and adds the knowledge from the author's lectures on wastewater engineering.Physical-Chemical Treatment of Water and Wastewater is not only descriptive but is also analytical in nature. The work covers the physical unit operations and unit processes utilized in the treatment of water and wastewater. Its organization is designed to match the major processes and its approach is mathematical. The authors stress the description and derivation of processes and process parameters in mathematical terms, which can then be generalized into diverse empirical situations. Each chapter includes design equations, definitions of symbols, a glossary of terms, and worked examples. One author is an environmental engineer and a professor for over 12 years and the other has been in the practice of environmental engineering for more than 20 years. They offer a sound analytical mathematical foundation and description of processes. Physical-Chemical Treatment of Water and Wastewater fills a niche as the only dedicated textbook in the area of physical and chemical methods, providing an analytical approach applicable to a range of empirical situations. 25 cm. Principles of environmental science / par Cunningham,, William P. Publication : [S.l.] : McGraw Hill Higher Education, 2008 . 448 p. ; , Rather than the 25 to 30 chapters found in most environmental science textbooks, the authors have limited "Principles of Environmental Science: Inquiry and Applications" to 15 chapters - perfect for the one-semester, non-majors environmental science course. True to its title, the goal of this concise text is to provide an up-to-date, introductory view of essential themes in environmental science along with offering students numerous opportunities to practice scientific thinking and active learning. 28 cm. Radiation exposure and image quality in X-ray diagnostic radiology : physical principles and clinical applications / par Aichinger, Horst. Publication : [S.l.] : Springer, 2003 . 212 p. ; , The largest contribution to radiation exposure to the population as a whole arises from diagnostic X-rays. Protecting the patient from radiation is a major aim of modern health policy, and an understanding of the relationship between radiation dose and image quality is pivotal to optimising medical diagnostic radiology. In this volume the data provided for exploring these concerns are partly based on X-ray spectra, measured on diagnostic X-ray tube assemblies, and are supplemented by the results of measurements on phantoms and simulation calculations. X-ray mammography data makes up the main part of this book. The book also features an extremely useful CD-ROM containing a comprehensive database in the form of Excel-files. 29 cm. Remote sensing digital image analysis : an introduction / par Richards, John A. Publication : [S.l.] : Springer, 2005 . 439 p. ; , Remote Sensing Digital Image Analysis provides the non-specialist with an introduction to quantitative evaluation of satellite and aircraft derived remotely retrieved data. Each chapter covers the pros and cons of digital remotely sensed data, without detailed mathematical treatment of computer based algorithms, but in a manner conductive to an understanding of their capabilities and limitations. Problems conclude each chapter. This fourth edition has been developed to reflect the changes that have occurred in this area over the past several years. Its focus is on those procedures that seem now to have become part of the set of tools regularly used to perform thematic mapping. As with previous revisions, the fundamental material has been preserved in its original form because of its tutorial value; its style has been revised in places and it has been supplemented if newer aspects have emerged in the time since the third edition appeared. It still meets, however, the needs of the senior student and practitioner. 25 cm. Date : 2005 Disponibilité : Exemplaires disponibles: La bibliothèque des Sciences Exactes et Naturelles (1),

Solar electric power generation - photovoltaic energy systems : modeling of optical and thermal performance, electrical yield, energy balance, effect on reduction of greenhouse gas emissions / par Krauter,, Stefan C. W. Publication : [S.l.] : Springer, 2006 . 217 p. ; , Solar electricity is a viable, environmentally sustainable alternative to the world’s energy supplies. In support, Dr. Krauter thoroughly examines the various technical parameters of photovoltaic systems. Study of performance and yield (including optical, thermal, and electrical parameters and interfaces) are analyzed. The net energy balance of photovoltaic systems – from production, operation and maintenance, to recycling – is explored. Professor Krauter demonstrates how the importance of accurate yield calculations, optimal system performance, and new prototypes aid in cost reductions. The potential of solar electric power generation as a means to significantly reduce CO 2 emissions is also detailed. In addition, various locations for the production and installation of photovoltaic power plants are considered – with surprising results. Examples, tables and figures are included. 24 cm. The Agulhas current par Lutjeharms, Johann R.E. Publication : [S.l.] Springer 2006 . 329 p. , The Agulhas Current is one of the major currents of the world ocean. In the network of currents that connect the major ocean basins, it forms a key link. This linkage may be of critical importance in the way the ocean affects the earth's climate and climate change. Based on the research findings of 60 years, the author describes the origins of the Agulhas Current, its behaviour, its influence on the adjacent continental shelf, its effect on local weather as well as its role in linking the Indian and the Atlantic Ocean. The text is well-illustrated and includes small asides on the history of research on the Agulhas Current. An exhaustive bibliography gives easy access to present knowledge on this important current system. 28 cm. The geological record of ecological dynamics : understanding the biotic effects of future environmental change / par Dynamics,, Committee on the Geologic Record of Biosphere. Publication : [S.l.] : National Academies Press, 2005 . 216 p. ; , In order to answer important questions about ecosystems and biodiversity, scientists can look to the past geological record which includes fossils, sediment and ice cores, and tree rings. Because of recent advances in earth scientists' ability to analyze biological and environmental information from geological data, the National Science Foundation and the U.S. Geological Survey asked a National Research Council (NRC) committee to assess the scientific opportunities provided by the geologic record and recommend how scientists can take advantage of these opportunities for the nation's benefit. The committee identified three initiatives for future research to be developed over the next decade: use the geological record as a 'natural laboratory' to explore changes in living things under a range of past conditions; use the record to better predict the response of biological systems to climate change; and, use geologic information to evaluate the effects of human and non-human factors on ecosystems. The committee also offered suggestions for improving the field through better training, improved databases, and additional funding. 23 cm.
