Engineering turbulence modelling and experiments 6 : ercoftac international symposium on engineering turbulence and measurements - etmm6.   Publication : [S.l.] : Elsevier Science, 2005 . 1012 p. ; , Proceedings of the world renowned ERCOFTAC (International Symposium on Engineering Turbulence Modelling and Measurements). The proceedings include papers dealing with the following areas of turbulence: Âɛ Eddy-viscosity and second-order RANS models Âɛ Direct and large-eddy simulations and deductions for conventional modelling Âɛ Measurement and visualization techniques, experimental studies Âɛ Turbulence control Âɛ Transition and effects of curvature, rotation and buoyancy on turbulence Âɛ Aero-acoustics Âɛ Heat and mass transfer and chemically reacting flows Âɛ Compressible flows, shock phenomena Âɛ Two-phase flows Âɛ Applications in aerospace engineering, turbomachinery and reciprocating engines, industrial aerodynamics and wind engineering, and selected chemical engineering problems Turbulence remains one of the key issues in tackling engineering flow problems. These problems are solved more and more by CFD analysis, the reliability of which depends strongly on the performance of the turbulence models employed. Successful simulation of turbulence requires the understanding of the complex physical phenomena involved and suitable models for describing the turbulent momentum, heat and mass transfer. For the understanding of turbulence phenomena, experiments are indispensable, but they are equally important for providing data for the development and testing of turbulence models and hence for CFD software validation. As in other fields of Science, in the rapidly developing discipline of turbulence, swift progress can be achieved only by keeping up to date with recent advances all over the world and by exchanging ideas with colleagues active in related fields. 25 cm. From vectors to tensors / par Ruiz-Tolosa,, Juan R. Publication : [S.l.] : Springer, 2005 . 550 p. ; , This textbook, deals with tensors that are treated as vectors, and has a practical orientation. In addition to dealing with the classical topics of tensor books, new tensor concepts are introduced, such as the rotation of tensors, the transposer tensor, the eigentensors, the permutation tensor structure, etc. The book covers an existing gap between the classic theory of tensors and the possibility of solving tensor problems with a computer. In fact, the computational algebra is formulated in matrix form to facilitate its implementation on computers. For the first time tensor contraction is formulated in terms of matrix operations. A computer package, written in Mathematica, is available through Internet that complements the book.   In summary, the book is not a standard book on tensors because of its orientation, the many novel contributions included in it, the careful notation and the stretching-condensing techniques used for most of the transformations used in the book. 24 cm. Laser aided diagnostics of gases and plasmas / par Muraoka,, K. Publication : [S.l.] : Taylor & Francis, 2002 . 200 p. ; , Laser-Aided Diagnostics of Gases and Plasmas is an updated and revised translation of the original Japanese edition. The authors have taken a unique approach in treating laser aided diagnostics as a unified subject instead of the usual and disjointed approach of describing each application as a totally separate system. In taking this approach, they highlight the relative strengths of each method and show how they can compliment each other in the study of gases and plasmas. The first part provides a general introduction to the laser-aided study of gases and plasmas, including the various principles and hardware needed for each method whilst the second part describes the applications of each general system in detail. This book will provide a useful tool for a wide spectrum of researchers, both academic and industrial, involved in the analysis and diagnostics of gases and plasmas and give a deeper insight and understanding of the various options and methods available when making such studies. 24 cm. Non-linear theory of elasticity and optimal design / par Ratner,, L.W. Publication : [S.l.] : Elsevier Science, 2003 . 279 p. ; , In order to select an optimal structure among possible similar structures, one needs to compare the elastic behavior of the structures. A new criterion that describes elastic behavior is the rate of change of deformation. Using this criterion, the safe dimensions of a structure that are required by the stress distributed in a structure can be calculated. The new non-linear theory of elasticity allows one to determine the actual individual limit of elasticity/failure of a structure using a simple non-destructive method of measurement of deformation on the model of a structure while presently it can be done only with a destructive test for each structure. For building and explaining the theory, a new logical structure was introduced as the basis of the theory. One of the important physical implications of this logic is that it describes mathematically the universal domain of the possible stable physical relations. 23 cm. Nuclear renaissance : technologies and policies for the future of nuclear power / par Nuttall,, William J. Publication : [S.l.] : Taylor & Francis, 2004 . 336 p. ; , Synopsis With growing concerns over environmental issues and global energy consumption, there is increasing interest in nuclear power generation, despite its diminished role in the West over the last few decades. Many of those involved with nuclear power and environmental agencies see controlled expansion of nuclear plants as the most environmentally friendly way of meeting growing energy demands. This book examines the future of nuclear power in the contexts of economics, environmental sustainability and security of electricity supplies. A range of future technologies is considered, illustrating the technical challenges and opportunities facing nuclear power. This semi-technical overview of modern technologies aims to meet the growing interest from scientists, environmentalists and governments in the potential expansion of nuclear power. Various countries are starting to announce plans for new nuclear plants, either to replace those being decommissioned or to provide additional power. Many commentators regard this renaissance as just beginning. Nuclear Renaissance is a timely appraisal of present nuclear power programme policy and technology, with a look to future expansion and new research directions. It will be essential reading for physicists, engineers, policy-makers, researchers, energy analysts and graduate students in energy sciences, engineering and public policy. 24 cm. Opportunities in high magnetic field science / par Science,, Committee on Opportunities in High Magnetic Field. Publication : [S.l.] : National Academies Press, 2005 . 188 p. ; , High-field magnets - those that operate at the limits of the mechanical and/or electromagnetic properties of their structural materials - are used as research tools in a variety of scientific disciplines. The study of high magnetic fields themselves is also important in many areas such as astrophysics. Because of their importance in scientific research and the possibility of new breakthroughs, the National Science Foundation asked the National Research Council to assess the current state of and future prospects for high-field science and technology in the United States. This report presents the results of that assessment. It focuses on scientific and technological challenges and opportunities, and not on specific program activities. The report provides findings and recommendations about important research directions, the relative strength of U.S. efforts compared to other countries, and ways in which the program can operate more effectively. 25 cm. Pfaffian systems, K-symplectic systems / par Awane, A. Publication : [S.l.] : Springer, 2000 . 260 p. ; , The geometrical view of mechanics is based on the study of certain exterior systems, the most classical of which are Pfaffian systems. In this book, we present the classification theorems (Frobenius, Darboux) and the local classification of Pfaffian systems of five variables, following Cartan. We also present a new class of exterior systems, called k-symplectic systems, generalizing the notion of symplectic form. These systems permit us to write in the language of exterior forms the equations proposed by Nambu for a model of statistical mechanics. Audience: This book is aimed at graduate students and at research workers in the field of mathematics, differential geometry, statistical mechanics, mathematics of physics and Lie algebras. 25 cm.
