Molecular evolution : a phylogenetic approach / par Page,, Roderick D.M. Publication : [S.l.] : Wiley-Blackwell, 1998 . 352 p. ; , The study of evolution at the molecular level has given the subject of evolutionary biology a new significance. Phylogenetic 'trees' of gene sequences are a powerful tool for recovering evolutionary relationships among species, and can be used to answer a broad range of evolutionary and ecological questions. They are also beginning to permeate the medical sciences. In this book, the authors approach the study of molecular evolution with the phylogenetic tree as a central metaphor. This will equip students and professionals with the ability to see both the evolutionary relevance of molecular data, and the significance evolutionary theory has for molecular studies. The book is accessible yet sufficiently detailed and explicit so that the student can learn the mechanics of the procedures discussed. The book is intended for senior undergraduate and graduate students taking courses in molecular evolution/phylogenetic reconstruction. It will also be a useful supplement for students taking wider courses in evolution, as well as a valuable resource for professionals. First student textbook of phylogenetic reconstruction which uses the tree as a central metaphor of evolution. Chapter summaries and annotated suggestions for further reading. Worked examples facilitate understanding of some of the more complex issues. Emphasis on clarity and accessibility. 25 cm. Neuroendocrine cells and peptidergic innervation in human and rat prostrate / par Santamaría,, Luis. Publication : [S.l.] : Springer, 2007 . 80 p. ; , The prostate hosts an important amount of neuroendocrine cells which origin and functional role need to be better addressed. These cells synthesize and deliver a number of neurosecretory substances (serotonin, neuropeptides) having regulative activities over growth, cell differentiation, and secretion and might have a remarkable influence in the development of prostatic proliferative disorders such as hyperplasia or cancer. Moreover, the autonomous nervous system seems to be relevant in the maintenance of structural and functional integrity of the prostate, a wide variety of peptidergic fibres has been described in the prostate gland; such as neuropeptide Y (NPY), vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP), substance P (SP), calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) nerves, etc. There is evidence about morphologic and functional relationships between neuroendocrine cells and prostate nerve fibres, resulting in a neuro-hormonal system that might modulate the androgenic action on the prostate. Using immunohistochemistry and stereologic quantification, the authors of the present study deal with the demonstration that the neuroendocrine cells population from transition zone of the human prostate was greater than in both central and peripheral regions, and this can be put in relation to the genesis of BPH. Furthermore, they observed that the neuroendocrine cells and the peptidergic innervation of rat prostate might be influenced by aging and androgenic status. Other factors, as pharmacological castration, or prolactin action, might be also modulate the neuroendocrine-peptidergic system. 23 cm. Nucleic acids hybridization : modern applications.   Publication : [S.l.] : Springer, 2007 . 316 p. ; , WatsonЀ“Crick hybridization of complementary sequences in nucleic acids is one of the most important processes necessary for molecular recognition in vivo, as well as nucleic acid identification and isolation. This book is devoted to a large family of in vitro DNA hybridization-based experimental techniques. A wide spectrum of experimental tasks covered by these approaches includes finding differential sequences in both genomic DNAs and mRNAs, genome walking, multiplex PCR, cDNA library construction starting from minute amount of total RNA, rapid amplification of cDNA 5Ѐ™ and 3Ѐ™ ends, effective smoothing of the concentrations of rare and abundant transcripts in cDNA libraries, recovery of promoter active repeats and differentially methylated genomic DNA, identification of common sequences in genomic or cDNA sources, new gene mapping, finding evolutionary conserved DNA and both single-nucleotide and extended mutation discovery or large-scale monitoring. Several approaches, such as microarray hybridization, have become extremely popular tools for specialists in biochemistry and in biomedicine, whereas the potential of many other advantageous techniques seems to be underestimated now. The international team of the authors of this book has tried both to elucidate the current state-of-art in hybridization techniques and to help the readers in choosing an appropriate method for performing an experiment in the most efficient way. Enclosed experimental protocols along with both comprehensive and detailed method descriptions make this truly universal book useful to all those interested in the modern life science methodologies. 24 cm. Orthogonal polynomials of several variables / par Dunkl, Charles F. Publication : [S.l.] : Cambridge University Press, 2001 . 408 p. ; , This is the first modern book on orthogonal polynomials of several variables, which are valuable tools used in multivariate analysis, including approximations and numerical integration. The book presents the theory in elegant form and with modern concepts and notation. It introduces the general theory and emphasizes the classical types of orthogonal polynomials whose weight functions are supported on standard domains such as the cube, the simplex, the sphere and the ball. It also focuses on those of Gaussian type, for which fairly explicit formulae exist. The authors' approach blends classical analysis and symmetry-group-theoretic methods. The book will be welcomed by research mathematicians and applied scientists, including applied mathematicians, physicists, chemists and engineers. 24 cm. Peroxiredoxin systems : structures and functions / par Flohé,, Leopold. Publication : [S.l.] : Springer, 2007 . 410 p. ; , The peroxiredoxins represent an important emerging family of sulfhydryl-linked antioxidant proteins, apparently ubiquitously present in all known organisms. The antioxidant function of the peroxiredoxins complements that of other enzymic and non-enzymic systems within the cell. In addition, there is increasing evidence that the peroxiredoxins play a role in cell signalling, by controlling and/or sensing hydrogen peroxide and peroxynitrite levels. In this, the first book containing a broad survey on the peroxiredoxins, the editors succeeded to involve almost all groups that contributed significant insights into the emerging field. The diverse biological roles of the new protein family are discussed in the context of other antioxidant systems like those based on heme or selenium catalysis. Finally, related future perspectives, which range from antimicrobial therapy up to the understanding of human development and carcinogenesis, are highlighted. Specifically, the book will be of outstanding interest to researchers who want to understand how micro-organisms, plants and animals cope with oxidative stress and how such stress is recognized and linked to adaptive responses via redox regulation of cellular processes. 24 cm. Physical chemistry of polymer rheology / par Furukawa, Junji. Publication : [S.l.] : Springer, 2003 . 280 p. ; , Rheology is the science and technology that deals with the deformation of polymeric or plastic materials. In this monograph the field of polymer rheology is explained with emphasis on the chemical theory. The book provides basic information on rheology for nonspecialists and gives clear explanations of the various phenomena. The author has developed a new theory of thermodynamics and kinetics using a model of multi-size pseudo crosslinks that provides a comprehensive principle to show how links in chain molecules affect the melting temperatures and determine polymer properties such as viscoelasticity, melt viscosity and elastic and plastic behaviour of bulk polymers. The theory can be extended to include the strength of rubber and plastics, active fillers and adhesion, friction and abrasion. 24 cm.
