Computing in nonlinear media & automata collectives / par Adamatzky,, Andrew. Publication : [S.l.] : Taylor & Francis, 2001 . 395 p. ; , The book gives an account of new ways to design massively parallel computing devices in advanced mathematical models (such as cellular automata and lattice swarms), and from unconventional materials, for example chemical solutions, bio-polymers and excitable media. The subject of this book is computing in excitable and reaction-diffusion media. This is one approach to novel computing methods. Other approaches include quantum and evolutionary computation, and swarm optimization. The book explains how to design computing devices in nonlinear media. This is achieved in three steps. First, cellular automaton models of reaction-diffusion and excitable computing are built. Second, natural analogies of simulated phenomena are sought. Third, working prototypes of laboratory processors are fabricated. Throughout the book it is assumed a computation is implemented using spreading waves and spatially interacting reagents. The book is full of examples of computation in cellular automata, swarms of mobile machines, thin-layer chemical liquids, insect societies, solitons, breathers and other wonders of Nature. In this book computer scientists and engineers will find blueprints inspired by Nature for the design of novel computing devices. Mathematicians will find exciting reasons to theorise. Physicists and chemists will be surprised and pleased to find that the systems they study can be used in completely new contexts. Biologists will discover that results of their field experiments also give solutions for celebrated mathematical problems. 25 cm. Engineering turbulence modelling and experiments 6 : ercoftac international symposium on engineering turbulence and measurements - etmm6.   Publication : [S.l.] : Elsevier Science, 2005 . 1012 p. ; , Proceedings of the world renowned ERCOFTAC (International Symposium on Engineering Turbulence Modelling and Measurements). The proceedings include papers dealing with the following areas of turbulence: Âɛ Eddy-viscosity and second-order RANS models Âɛ Direct and large-eddy simulations and deductions for conventional modelling Âɛ Measurement and visualization techniques, experimental studies Âɛ Turbulence control Âɛ Transition and effects of curvature, rotation and buoyancy on turbulence Âɛ Aero-acoustics Âɛ Heat and mass transfer and chemically reacting flows Âɛ Compressible flows, shock phenomena Âɛ Two-phase flows Âɛ Applications in aerospace engineering, turbomachinery and reciprocating engines, industrial aerodynamics and wind engineering, and selected chemical engineering problems Turbulence remains one of the key issues in tackling engineering flow problems. These problems are solved more and more by CFD analysis, the reliability of which depends strongly on the performance of the turbulence models employed. Successful simulation of turbulence requires the understanding of the complex physical phenomena involved and suitable models for describing the turbulent momentum, heat and mass transfer. For the understanding of turbulence phenomena, experiments are indispensable, but they are equally important for providing data for the development and testing of turbulence models and hence for CFD software validation. As in other fields of Science, in the rapidly developing discipline of turbulence, swift progress can be achieved only by keeping up to date with recent advances all over the world and by exchanging ideas with colleagues active in related fields. 25 cm. Fluid mechanics and thermodynamics of turbomachinery, fifth edition / par Ph.D.,, S.L. Dixon B.Eng. Publication : [S.l.] : Butterworth-Heinemann, 2005 . 412 p. ; , The fifth edition of this text will continue to be of use to engineers in industry and technological establishments, especially as brief reviews are included on many important aspects of Turbomachinery, giving pointers towards more advanced sources of information. For those looking towards the wider reaches of the subject area, very useful additional reading is referenced in the bibliography. The subject of Turbomachinery is in continual review, and while the basics do not change, research can lead to refinements in popular methods, and new data can emerge. This book has applications for professionals and students in many subsets of the mechanical engineering discipline, with carryover into thermal sciences; which include fluid mechanics, combustion and heat transfer; dynamics and vibrations, as well as structural mechanics and materials engineering. * An important, long overdue new chapter on Wind Turbines, with a focus on blade aerodynamics, with useful worked examples * Includes important material on axial flow compressors and pumps * Example questions and answers throughout and an available Solutions Manual. 23 cm. From vectors to tensors / par Ruiz-Tolosa,, Juan R. Publication : [S.l.] : Springer, 2005 . 550 p. ; , This textbook, deals with tensors that are treated as vectors, and has a practical orientation. In addition to dealing with the classical topics of tensor books, new tensor concepts are introduced, such as the rotation of tensors, the transposer tensor, the eigentensors, the permutation tensor structure, etc. The book covers an existing gap between the classic theory of tensors and the possibility of solving tensor problems with a computer. In fact, the computational algebra is formulated in matrix form to facilitate its implementation on computers. For the first time tensor contraction is formulated in terms of matrix operations. A computer package, written in Mathematica, is available through Internet that complements the book.   In summary, the book is not a standard book on tensors because of its orientation, the many novel contributions included in it, the careful notation and the stretching-condensing techniques used for most of the transformations used in the book. 24 cm. Laser aided diagnostics of gases and plasmas / par Muraoka,, K. Publication : [S.l.] : Taylor & Francis, 2002 . 200 p. ; , Laser-Aided Diagnostics of Gases and Plasmas is an updated and revised translation of the original Japanese edition. The authors have taken a unique approach in treating laser aided diagnostics as a unified subject instead of the usual and disjointed approach of describing each application as a totally separate system. In taking this approach, they highlight the relative strengths of each method and show how they can compliment each other in the study of gases and plasmas. The first part provides a general introduction to the laser-aided study of gases and plasmas, including the various principles and hardware needed for each method whilst the second part describes the applications of each general system in detail. This book will provide a useful tool for a wide spectrum of researchers, both academic and industrial, involved in the analysis and diagnostics of gases and plasmas and give a deeper insight and understanding of the various options and methods available when making such studies. 24 cm. Non-linear theory of elasticity and optimal design / par Ratner,, L.W. Publication : [S.l.] : Elsevier Science, 2003 . 279 p. ; , In order to select an optimal structure among possible similar structures, one needs to compare the elastic behavior of the structures. A new criterion that describes elastic behavior is the rate of change of deformation. Using this criterion, the safe dimensions of a structure that are required by the stress distributed in a structure can be calculated. The new non-linear theory of elasticity allows one to determine the actual individual limit of elasticity/failure of a structure using a simple non-destructive method of measurement of deformation on the model of a structure while presently it can be done only with a destructive test for each structure. For building and explaining the theory, a new logical structure was introduced as the basis of the theory. One of the important physical implications of this logic is that it describes mathematically the universal domain of the possible stable physical relations. 23 cm.
