Climate data records from environmental satellites : interim report / par Satellites,, Committee on Climate Data Records from NOAA Operational. Publication : [S.l.] : National Academies Press, 2004 . 150 p. ; , The report outlines key elements to consider in designing a program to create climate-quality data from satellites. It examines historical attempts to create climate data records, provides advice on steps for generating, re-analyzing, and storing satellite climate data, and discusses the importance of partnering between agencies, academia, and industry. NOAA will use this report - the first in a two-part study - to draft an implementation plan for climate data records. 25 cm. Groundwater fluxes across interfaces / par Science,, Committee on Hydrologic. Publication : [S.l.] : National Academies Press, 2004 . 100 p. ; , Estimates of groundwater recharge and discharge rates are needed at many different scales for many different purposes. These include such tasks as evaluating landslide risks, managing groundwater resources, locating nuclear waste repositories, and estimating global budgets of water and greenhouse gasses. "Groundwater Fluxes Across Interfaces" focuses on scientific challenges in: the spatial and temporal variability of recharge and discharge; how information at one scale can be used at another; and the effects of groundwater on climate and vice versa. 28 cm. Living on an active earth : perspectives on earthquake science / par Earthquakes,, Committee on the Science of. Publication : [S.l.] : National Academies Press, 2003 . 432 p. ; , The destructive force of earthquakes has stimulated human inquiry since ancient times, yet the scientific study of earthquakes is a surprisingly recent endeavor. Instrumental recordings of earthquakes were not made until the second half of the 19th century, and the primary mechanism for generating seismic waves was not identified until the beginning of the 20th century. From this recent start, a range of laboratory, field, and theoretical investigations have developed into a vigorous new discipline: the science of earthquakes. As a basic science, it provides a comprehensive understanding of earthquake behavior and related phenomena in the Earth and other terrestrial planets. As an applied science, it provides a knowledge base of great practical value for a global society whose infrastructure is built on the Earth's active crust. This book describes the growth and origins of earthquake science and identifies research and data collection efforts that will strengthen the scientific and social contributions of this exciting new discipline. 24 cm. On the metaphysics of experimental physics / par Rogers,, Karl. Publication : [S.l.] : Palgrave Macmillan, 2005 . 264 p. ; , This provocative and critical work addresses the question of why scientific realists and positivists consider experimental physics to be a natural and empirical science. Taking insights from contemporary science studies, continental philosophy, and the history of physics, this book describes and analyzes the metaphysical presuppositions that underwrite the technological use of experimental apparatus and instruments to explore, model, and understand nature. 22 cm. Opportunities in high magnetic field science / par Science,, Committee on Opportunities in High Magnetic Field. Publication : [S.l.] : National Academies Press, 2005 . 188 p. ; , High-field magnets - those that operate at the limits of the mechanical and/or electromagnetic properties of their structural materials - are used as research tools in a variety of scientific disciplines. The study of high magnetic fields themselves is also important in many areas such as astrophysics. Because of their importance in scientific research and the possibility of new breakthroughs, the National Science Foundation asked the National Research Council to assess the current state of and future prospects for high-field science and technology in the United States. This report presents the results of that assessment. It focuses on scientific and technological challenges and opportunities, and not on specific program activities. The report provides findings and recommendations about important research directions, the relative strength of U.S. efforts compared to other countries, and ways in which the program can operate more effectively. 25 cm. Quantitative hydrogeology : groundwater hydrology for engineers / par Marsily,, Ghislain De. Publication : [S.l.] : Academic Press, 1986 . 440 p. ; , FROM THE PREFACE: This book attempts to combine two separate themes: a description of one of the links in the chain of the water cycle inside the earth's crust i.e., the subsurface flow; and the quantification of the various types of this flow, obtained by applying the principles of fluid mechanics in porous media. The first part is the more descriptive, and geological of the two. It deals with the concept of water resources, which then leads us on to other links in the cycle: rainfall, infiltration, evaporation. runoff, and surface water resources. The second part is necessary in order to quantify ground water resources. It points the way to other applications, such as solutions to civil engineering problems including drainage and compaction; and transport problems in porous media, including aquifer pollution by miscible fluids, multiphase flow of immiscible fluids, and heat transfer in porous media, i.e., geothermal problems. However, the qualitative and the quantitative aspects are not treated separately but combined and blended together, just as geology and hydrology are woven together in hydrogeology. 24 cm. Quantum chance and non-locality : probability and non-locality in the interpretations of quantum mechanics / par Dickson,, W. Michael. Publication : [S.l.] : Cambridge University Press, 2005 . 268 p. ; , This book examines in detail two of the fundamental questions raised by quantum mechanics. Is the world indeterministic? Are there connections between spatially separated objects? In the first part of the book after outlining the formalism of quantum mechanics and introducing the measurement problem, the author examines several interpretations, focusing on how each proposes to solve the measurement problem and on how each treats probability. In the second part, the author argues that there can be non-trivial relationships between probability (specifically, determinism and indeterminism) and non-locality in an interpretation of quantum mechanics. The author then re-examines some of the interpretations of part one of the book in the light of this argument, and considers how they are with regard to locality and Lorentz invariance. One of the important lessons that comes out of this discussion is that any examination of locality, and of the relationship between quantum mechanics and the theory of relativity, should be undertaken in the context of a detailed interpretation of quantum mechanics. The book will appeal to anyone with an interest in the interpretation of quantum mechanics, including researchers in the philosophy of physics and theoretical physics, as well as graduate students in those fields. 25 cm.
