Antibiotics the perfect storm par Shlaes, David M. Publication : [S.l.] Springer 2010 . 106 p. , Antibiotics are truly miracle drugs. As a class, they are one of the only ones that actually cure disease as opposed to most drugs that only help relieve symptoms or control disease. Since bacteria that cause serious disease in humans are becoming more and more resistant to the antibiotics we have today, and because they will ultimately become resistant to any antibiotic that we use for treatment or for anything else, we need a steady supply of new antibiotics active against any resistant bacteria that arise. However, the antibiotics marketplace is no longer attractive for large pharmaceutical companies, the costs of development are skyrocketing because of ever more stringent requirements by the regulatory agencies, and finding new antibiotics active against resistant strains is getting harder and harder. These forces are all combining to deny us these miracle drugs when we need them the most. I provide a number of possible paths to shelter from this perfect storm. 24 cm. Bone marrow and stem cell transplantation.   Publication : [S.l.] Humana Press 2007 . 234 p. , This volume is a compendium of cutting-edge molecular methods for the successful transplantation of hematopoietic stem cells. The availability of genetic profiles for committed and uncommitted stem cells combined with the determination of molecular steps involved in hematopoietic stem cell activation and self-renewal hold tremendous promise for future success in the clinic. Currently, stem cells can be quantified and sorted successfully, but transduction, labeling, and in vivo tracking of stem cells are difficult techniques with traditionally low efficiency levels. The contributors to this volume describe promising tools for stem cell transplant research models, such as in vivo bioluminescence imaging. Topics included in this volume are molecular profiling of hematopoietic stell cells, methods for imaging cell fates in hematopoiesis, PCR-SSP typing of HLA Class I and Class II alleles, sequence-based HLA typing, and typing minor HLA antigens. Also discussed in this volume are the roles of natural killer cells and killer inhibitor receptor polymorphisms, polymorphisms within epithelial receptors, molecular methods used for the detection of autologous graft contamination in lymphoid disorders, and the application of proteomics to posttransplantation follow-up. With the recent trend moving from gene expression to the protein expression profiles, the application of proteomics to the posttransplant follow-up of patients is becoming routine. As a result, this volume will become an invaluable source for biochemists, molecular biologists, and clinicians. 24 cm. Guide to signal pathways in immune cells par Wardle,, E. Nigel. Publication : [S.l.] Humana Press 2009 . 415 p. , In Guide to Signal Pathways in Immune Cells, Nigel E. Wardle presents vital information in regards to white cells, like the neutrophils and macrophages, T and B lymphocytes, natural killer cells and mast cells, as they constitute the immune defenses against microbial invaders or tumor cells. In all such cells the necessary information processing for their activities utilizes a network of intracellular signaling pathways. As a guide this book aims to extend understanding of the basic signal transduction pathways that will be suitable for students of immunology or cell biology and for medical personnel at all levels. 24 cm.
