Hysteresis in magnetism : for physicists, materials scientists, and engineers / par Bertotti, Giorgio. Publication : [S.l.] : Academic Press, 1998 . 558 p. ; , This book provides a comprehensive treatment of the physics of hysteresis in magnetism and of the mathematical tools used to describe it. Hysteresis in Magnetism discusses from a unified viewpoint the relationsof hysteresis to Maxwells equations, equilibrium and non-equilibrium thermodynamics, non-linear system dynamics, micromagnetics, and domain theory. These aspects are then applied to the interpretation of magnetization reversal mechanisms: coherent rotation and switching in magnetic particles, stochastic domain wall motion and the Barkhausen effect, coercivity mechanisms and magnetic viscosity, rate-dependent hysteresis and eddy-current losses. The book emphasizes the connection between basic physical ideas and phenomenological models of interest to applications, and, in particular, to the conceptual path going from Maxwells equations and thermodynamics to micromagnetics and to Preisach hysteresis modeling. Key Features * The reader will get insight into the importance and role of hysteresis in magnetism; In particular, he will learn: * which are the fingerprints of hysteresis in magnetism * which are the situations in which hysteresis may appear * how to describe mathematically these situations * how to apply these descriptions to magnetic materials * how to interpret and predict magnetic hysteresis phenomena observed experimentally. 23 cm. International tables for crystallography, symmetry relations between space groups.   Publication : [S.l.] : Wiley, 2004 . 744 p. ; , This volume presents a systematic treatment of the maximal subgroups and minimal supergroups of the crystallographic plane groups and space groups. It is an extension of and a supplement to Volume A, Space-group symmetry, in which only basic data for sub- and supergroups are provided. Group-subgroup relations, apart from their theoretical interest, are the basis of a number of important applications in crystallographic research: (1) In solid-state phase transitions there often exists a group-subgroup relation between the symmetry groups of the two phases. According to Landau theory, this is in fact mandatory for displacive (continuous, second-order) phase transitions. Group-subgroup relations are also indispensable in cases where the symmetry groups of the two phases are not directly related but share a common subgroup or supergroup. (2) Group-subgroup relations provide a concise and powerful tool for revealing and elucidating relations between crystal structures. They can thus help to keep up with the ever-increasing amount of crystal-structure data. Their application requires knowledge of the relations of the Wyckoff positions of group-subgroup related structures. (3) Group-subgroup relations are of great importance in the study of twinned crystals, domain structures and domain boundaries. (4) These relations can even help to identify errors in space-group assignment and crystal-structure determination. (5) Subgroups of space groups provide a valuable approach to teaching crystallographic symmetry. Volume A1 consists of three parts: Part 1 presents an introduction to the theory of space groups at various levels and with many examples. It includes a chapter on the mathematical theory of subgroups. Part 2 gives for each plane group and space group a complete listing of all maximal subgroups and minimal supergroups. The treatment includes the generators of each subgroup as well as any necessary changes of the coordinate system. Maximal isomorphic subgroups are given in parameterized form as infinite series because of the infinite number for each group. A special feature of the presentation is graphs that illustrate the group-subgroup relations. Part 3 lists the relations between the Wyckoff positions of every space group and its subgroups. Again, the infinite number of maximal isomorphic subgroups of each space group are covered by parameterized series. These data for Wyckoff positions are presented here for the first time. Audience: The volume is a valuable addition to the library of scientists engaged in crystal-structure determination, crystal physics or crystal chemistry. It is essential for those interested in phase transitions, the systematic compilation of crystal structures, twinning phenomena and related fields of crystallographic research. 31 cm. Introduction to surface and superlattice excitations, second edition / par Cottam,, Michael .G. Publication : [S.l.] : Taylor & Francis, 2004 . 516 p. ; , Cottam and Tilley provide an introduction to the properties of wave-like excitations associated with surfaces and interfaces. The emphasis is on acoustic, optic and magnetic excitations, and apart from one section on liquid surfaces, the text concentrates on solids. The important topic of superlattices is also discussed, in which the different kinds of excitation are considered from a unified point of view. Throughout the book, the authors are careful to relate theory and experiment and all of the most important experimental techniques are described. The theoretical treatment assumes only a knowledge of undergraduate physics, except for Green function methods that are used in a few sections; these methods are developed in an appendix. The book also contains extensive references, enabling the reader to consult the research and review literature. Each of the main chapters contains problems to allow the reader to develop topics presented in the text. 24 cm. Nanochemistry : a chemical approach to nanomaterials / par Ozin,, Geoffrey A. Publication : [S.l.] : Royal Society of Chemistry, 2005 . 594 p. ; , "... [A] gem in the scientific literature". Michael W. Pitcher, Science , 21 July 2006 International interest in nanoscience research has flourished in recent years, as it becomes an integral part in the development of future technologies. The diverse, interdisciplinary nature of nanoscience means effective communication between disciplines is pivotal in the successful utilization of the science. Nanochemistry : A Chemical Approach to Nanomaterials is the first textbook for teaching nanochemistry and adopts an interdisciplinary and comprehensive approach to the subject. It presents a basic chemical strategy for making nanomaterials and describes some of the principles of materials self-assembly over 'all' scales. It demonstrates how nanometre and micrometre scale building blocks (with a wide range of shapes, compositions and surface functionalities) can be coerced through chemistry to organize spontaneously into unprecedented structures, which can serve as tailored functional materials. Suggestions of new ways to tackle research problems and speculations on how to think about assembling the future of nanotechnology are given. Primarily designed for teaching, this book will appeal to graduate and advanced undergraduate students. It is well illustrated with graphical representations of the structure and form of nanomaterials and contains problem sets as well as other pedagogical features such as further reading, case studies and a comprehensive bibliography. Geoffrey Ozin and André Arsenault are both based at the University of Toronto in Canada. Ozin has been the recipient of numerous awards and has made a huge contribution to teaching over the years, while his research work is widely published and recognised throughout the world. Philip Ball, renowned science writer and 2005 winner of the Aventis Prize for Science, commented: "A text that covers all the basic concepts of nanoscale chemistry and materials science, and sets them in their historical context, has been long overdue. But here it is — not just a comprehensive guide to the field, but a recipe book for the future. Nanoengineers, start here!" 24 cm.
