Computer simulation and data analysis in molecular biology and biophysics an introduction using R par Bloomfield, Victor Publication : New York Springer 2009 . xvi, 321 p. , This book provides an introduction, suitable for advanced undergraduates and beginning graduate students, to two important aspects of molecular biology and biophysics: computer simulation and data analysis. It introduces tools to enable readers to learn and use fundamental methods for constructing quantitative models of biological mechanisms, both deterministic and with some elements of randomness, including complex reaction equilibria and kinetics, population models, and regulation of metabolism and development; to understand how concepts of probability can help in explaining important features of DNA sequences; and to apply a useful set of statistical methods to analysis of experimental data from spectroscopic, genomic, and proteomic sources. These quantitative tools are implemented using the free, open source software program R. R provides an excellent environment for general numerical and statistical computing and graphics, with capabilities similar to Matlab. Since R is increasingly used in bioinformatics applications such as the BioConductor project, it can serve students as their basic quantitative, statistical, and graphics tool as they develop their careers. 24 cm. Damped wave transport and relaxation / par Sharma,, Kal Renganathan. Publication : [S.l.] : Elsevier Science, 2005 . 462 p. ; , Transient problems in transport phenomena have a variety of applications, ranging from drug delivery systems in chemotherapy in bioengineering to heat transfer to surfaces in fluidized bed combustion (FBC) boilers in mechanical engineering. However, the attention given to transient problems is disproportionate with its occurrence in the industry. Damped Wave Transport and Relaxation looks at transient problems in heat, mass and momentum transfer: including non-Fourier effects of conduction and relaxation; non-Fick effects of mass diffusion and relaxation; and non-Newtonian effects of viscous momentum transfer and relaxation. The author also reviews applications to current problems of interest and uses worked examples and illustrations to describe the manifestations of using generalized transport equations. This book is intended for graduate students in transport phenomena and is an ideal reference source for industrial engineers. * Provides a connection with molecular phenomena * Separate sections are devoted to heat, mass and momentum transfer * Includes exercises and examples of applications. 25 cm. Electromagnetic field computation by network methods par Felsen,, Leopold B. Publication : [S.l.] Springer 2009 . 228 p. , In this monograph, the authors propose a systematic and rigorous treatment of electromagnetic field representations in complex structures. The architecture suggested in this book accommodates use of different numerical methods as well as alternative Green's function representations in each of the subdomains resulting from a partitioning of the overall problem. The subdomains are regions of space where electromagnetic energy is stored and are described in terms of equivalent circuit representations based either on lumped element circuits or on transmission lines. Connection networks connect the subcircuits representing the subdomains. The connection networks are lossless, don't store energy and represent the overall problem topology. This is similar to what is done in circuit theory and permits a phrasing of the solution of EM field problems in complex structures by Network-oriented methods. 24 cm. Engineering turbulence modelling and experiments 6 : ercoftac international symposium on engineering turbulence and measurements - etmm6.   Publication : [S.l.] : Elsevier Science, 2005 . 1012 p. ; , Proceedings of the world renowned ERCOFTAC (International Symposium on Engineering Turbulence Modelling and Measurements). The proceedings include papers dealing with the following areas of turbulence: Âɛ Eddy-viscosity and second-order RANS models Âɛ Direct and large-eddy simulations and deductions for conventional modelling Âɛ Measurement and visualization techniques, experimental studies Âɛ Turbulence control Âɛ Transition and effects of curvature, rotation and buoyancy on turbulence Âɛ Aero-acoustics Âɛ Heat and mass transfer and chemically reacting flows Âɛ Compressible flows, shock phenomena Âɛ Two-phase flows Âɛ Applications in aerospace engineering, turbomachinery and reciprocating engines, industrial aerodynamics and wind engineering, and selected chemical engineering problems Turbulence remains one of the key issues in tackling engineering flow problems. These problems are solved more and more by CFD analysis, the reliability of which depends strongly on the performance of the turbulence models employed. Successful simulation of turbulence requires the understanding of the complex physical phenomena involved and suitable models for describing the turbulent momentum, heat and mass transfer. For the understanding of turbulence phenomena, experiments are indispensable, but they are equally important for providing data for the development and testing of turbulence models and hence for CFD software validation. As in other fields of Science, in the rapidly developing discipline of turbulence, swift progress can be achieved only by keeping up to date with recent advances all over the world and by exchanging ideas with colleagues active in related fields. 25 cm. Finite element analysis of acoustic scattering par Ihlenburg, Frank. Publication : NEW YORK Springer 1998 . 238 p. , A cognitive journey towards the reliable simulation of scattering problems using finite element methods, with the pre-asymptotic analysis of Galerkin FEM for the Helmholtz equation with moderate and large wave number forming the core of this book. Starting from the basic physical assumptions, the author methodically develops both the strong and weak forms of the governing equations, while the main chapter on finite element analysis is preceded by a systematic treatment of Galerkin methods for indefinite sesquilinear forms. In the final chapter, three dimensional computational simulations are presented and compared with experimental data. The author also includes broad reference material on numerical methods for the Helmholtz equation in unbounded domains, including Dirichlet-to-Neumann methods, absorbing boundary conditions, infinite elements and the perfectly matched layer. A self-contained and easily readable work. 25 cm. Date : 1998 Disponibilité : Exemplaires disponibles: La bibliothèque des Sciences Exactes et Naturelles (1),

From current algebra to quantum chromodynamics : a case for structural realism par Cao, Tian Yu Publication : Cambridge | New York Cambridge University Press 2010 . x, 308 pages , "The advent of quantum chromodynamics (QCD) in the early 1970s was one of the most important events in twentieth-century science. This book examines the conceptual steps that were crucial to the rise of QCD, placing them in historical context against the background of debates that were ongoing between the bootstrap approach and composite modeling, and between mathematical and realistic conceptions of quarks. It explains the origins of QCD in current algebra and its development through high-energy experiments, model-building, mathematical analysis and conceptual synthesis. Addressing a range of complex physical, philosophical and historiographical issues in detail, this book will interest graduate students and researchers in physics and in the history and philosophy of science"-- 26 m. Generalized kinetic models in applied sciences lecture notes on mathematical problem par Arlotti, Luisa. Publication : Singapore World Scientific Pub Co Inc 2003 . XII-199 p. , This work deals with analytic problems related to some developments and generalizations of the Boltzmann equation toward the modeling and qualitative analysis of large systems that are of interest in applied sciences. These generalizations are documented in the various surveys edited by Bellomo and Pulvirenti with reference to models of granular media, traffic flow, mathematical biology, communication networks, and coagulation models. The above literature motivates applied mathematicians to study the Cauchy problem and to develop an asymptotic analysis for models regarded as developments of the Boltzmann equation. This book aims to initiate the research plan by the analyzing aforementioned analysis problems. The first generalization dealt with refers to the averaged Boltzmann equation, which is obtained by suitable averaging of the distribution function of the field particles into the action domain of the test particle. This model is further developed to describe equations with dissipative collisions and a class of models that are of interest in mathematical biology. In this latter case the state of the particles is defined not only by a mechanical variable but also by a biological microscopic state. The book is essentially devoted to analytic aspects and deals with the analysis of the Cauchy problem and with the development of an asymptotic theory to obtain the macroscopic description from the mesoscopic one. 24 cm.
