Computational electromagnetics for rf and microwave engineering / par Davidson,, David B. Publication : [S.l.] : Cambridge University Press, 2005 . 430 p. ; , The numerical approximation of Maxwell's equations, Computational Electromagnetics (CEM), has emerged as a crucial enabling technology for radio-frequency, microwave and wireless engineering. The three most popular 'full-wave' methods - the Finite Difference Time Domain Method, the Method of Moments, and the Finite Element Method - are introduced in this book by way of one or two-dimensional problems. Commercial or public domain codes implementing these methods are then applied to complex, real-world engineering problems, and a careful analysis of the reliability of the results obtained is performed, along with a discussion of the many pitfalls which can result in inaccurate and misleading solutions. The book will empower readers to become discerning users of CEM software, with an understanding of the underlying methods and confidence in the results obtained. It also introduces readers to the art of code development. This book is aimed at senior undergraduate/graduate students taking CEM courses and practising engineers in the industry. 25 cm. Damped wave transport and relaxation / par Sharma,, Kal Renganathan. Publication : [S.l.] : Elsevier Science, 2005 . 462 p. ; , Transient problems in transport phenomena have a variety of applications, ranging from drug delivery systems in chemotherapy in bioengineering to heat transfer to surfaces in fluidized bed combustion (FBC) boilers in mechanical engineering. However, the attention given to transient problems is disproportionate with its occurrence in the industry. Damped Wave Transport and Relaxation looks at transient problems in heat, mass and momentum transfer: including non-Fourier effects of conduction and relaxation; non-Fick effects of mass diffusion and relaxation; and non-Newtonian effects of viscous momentum transfer and relaxation. The author also reviews applications to current problems of interest and uses worked examples and illustrations to describe the manifestations of using generalized transport equations. This book is intended for graduate students in transport phenomena and is an ideal reference source for industrial engineers. * Provides a connection with molecular phenomena * Separate sections are devoted to heat, mass and momentum transfer * Includes exercises and examples of applications. 25 cm. Engineering turbulence modelling and experiments 6 : ercoftac international symposium on engineering turbulence and measurements - etmm6.   Publication : [S.l.] : Elsevier Science, 2005 . 1012 p. ; , Proceedings of the world renowned ERCOFTAC (International Symposium on Engineering Turbulence Modelling and Measurements). The proceedings include papers dealing with the following areas of turbulence: Âɛ Eddy-viscosity and second-order RANS models Âɛ Direct and large-eddy simulations and deductions for conventional modelling Âɛ Measurement and visualization techniques, experimental studies Âɛ Turbulence control Âɛ Transition and effects of curvature, rotation and buoyancy on turbulence Âɛ Aero-acoustics Âɛ Heat and mass transfer and chemically reacting flows Âɛ Compressible flows, shock phenomena Âɛ Two-phase flows Âɛ Applications in aerospace engineering, turbomachinery and reciprocating engines, industrial aerodynamics and wind engineering, and selected chemical engineering problems Turbulence remains one of the key issues in tackling engineering flow problems. These problems are solved more and more by CFD analysis, the reliability of which depends strongly on the performance of the turbulence models employed. Successful simulation of turbulence requires the understanding of the complex physical phenomena involved and suitable models for describing the turbulent momentum, heat and mass transfer. For the understanding of turbulence phenomena, experiments are indispensable, but they are equally important for providing data for the development and testing of turbulence models and hence for CFD software validation. As in other fields of Science, in the rapidly developing discipline of turbulence, swift progress can be achieved only by keeping up to date with recent advances all over the world and by exchanging ideas with colleagues active in related fields. 25 cm. Heavy-tail phenomena : probabilistic and statistical modeling / par Resnick, Sidney I. Publication : [S.l.] : Springer, 2006 . 406 p. ; , This comprehensive text  gives an interesting  and useful blend  of the mathematical, probabilistic and statistical tools used in heavy-tail analysis.  Heavy tails are characteristic of many  phenomena where the probability of a single huge value impacts heavily.  Record-breaking insurance losses,  financial-log returns, files sizes stored on a server, transmission rates of files are all examples of  heavy-tailed phenomena. Key features: * Unique  text devoted to heavy-tails * Emphasizes both probability modeling and statistical methods for fitting models.   Most  treatments focus on one or the other but not both * Presents broad applicability  of heavy-tails to the fields of data networks, finance (e.g., value-at- risk), insurance, and hydrology * Clear, efficient and coherent exposition, balancing  theory and actual data to show the applicability and limitations of certain methods * Examines in detail the mathematical properties of the methodologies as well as their implementation in  Splus or R statistical languages * Exposition driven by numerous examples and exercises Prerequisites for the reader include a prior course in stochastic processes and probability, some statistical background, some familiarity with time series analysis, and ability to use (or at least to learn) a statistics package such as R or Splus. This work will serve second-year graduate students and researchers in the areas of applied mathematics, statistics, operations research, electrical engineering, and economics. 24 cm. Improving the scientific foundation for atmosphere-land-ocean simulations : report of a workshop / par Models,, Committee on Challenges in Representing Physical Processes in Coupled Atmosphere-Land-Ocean. Publication : [S.l.] : National Academies Press, 2005 . 84 p. ; , The National Academies' Board on Atmospheric Sciences and Climate (BASC) held a workshop to explore and evaluate current efforts to model physical processes of coupled atmosphere-land-ocean (A-L-O) models. Numerical models of the atmosphere and ocean are central to weather prediction, research, and education. Although great strides have been made over the past few decades in understanding the atmosphere and ocean, modeling capabilities, and numerical A-L-O simulations, some unresolved processes in the models do not adequately represent knowledge of the underlying physics. Moreover, there is evidence that further progress in numerical simulations is being impeded by the slow pace of improvement in the representation of key physical processes in the models and the fact that geophysical flow models are not receiving the attention needed to make these tools more useful and accurate. These models often are used to predict future events, so it is imperative that their underlying physical processes be represented as robustly as possible. During the workshop, the parameterization of physical processes in A-L-O models was addressed, including associated errors, testing, and efforts to improve the use of parameterizations. Participants also examined intellectual and scientific challenges in modeling and highlighted the idea that some of the key impediments to progress in representing physical processes are primarily cultural in nature. 23 cm. Modeling and simulation of aerospace vehicle dynamics / par Zipfel, Peter H. Publication : [S.l.] : AIAA (American Institute of Aeronautics & Ast, 2007 . 567 p. ; , This book unifies all aspects of flight dynamics for the efficient development of aerospace vehicle simulations. Now in its second edition, its purpose is still to provide the reader with a complete set of tools to build, program, and execute simulations. Unlike other books, it uses tensors for modeling flight dynamics in a form invariant under coordinate transformations. For implementation, the tensors are converted into matrices, resulting in compact computer code. The reader can pick FORTRAN templates of missiles, aircraft, or hypersonic vehicles from the complimentary "CADAC" CD-ROM to jump-start a particular application, and plot the results of CADAC Studio. It is the only textbook that combines the theory of modeling with hands-on examples of three-, five-, and six-DoF simulations. This new and enlarged edition also serves as anchor for a self-tutoring, three-part course of aerospace simulations in C++, available from AIAA. Amply illustrated with 318 figures and 44 examples, the text can be used for advanced undergraduate and graduate instruction or for self-study. Seventy eight problems and nine projects amplify the topics and develop the material further. Qualified instructors can obtain a complimentary solution manual from AIAA. This second edition contains two new appendices. The original Appendix C, which reviewed state-of-the-art FORTRAN simulations, has been replaced by the description of three self-study CD-ROMs of aerospace simulations in C++. These CDs broaden the applications of this book by spanning from simple three degrees of freedom cruise missiles to high fidelity missiles, aircraft, and hypersonic vehicles. The new Appendix D lays the theoretical foundation of tensor flight dynamics. It contains the proofs of the rotational time derivative and the Euler transformation. 24 cm. Modeling complex systems / par Boccara,, Nino. Publication : [S.l.] : Springer, 2003 . 397 p. ; , This book explores the process of modeling complex systems in the widest sense of that term, drawing on examples from such diverse fields as ecology, epidemiology, sociology, seismology, as well as economics. It also provides the mathematical tools for studying the dynamics of these systems. Boccara takes a carefully inductive approach in defining what it means for a system to be 'complex' (and at the same time addresses the equally elusive concept of emergent properties). This is the first text on the subject to draw comprehensive conclusions from such a wide range of analogous phenomena. 24 cm. Operator approach in linear problems of hydrodynamics par Kopachevsky,, Nikolay D. Publication : [S.l.] Birkhäuser Basel 2001 . 384 p. , This is the first volume of a set of two devoted to the operator approach to linear problems in hydrodynamics. It presents functional analytical methods applied to the study of small movements and normal oscillations of hydromechanical systems having cavities filled with either ideal or viscous fluids. The work is a sequel to and at the same time substantially extends the volume "Operator Methods in Linear Hydrodynamics: Evolution and Spectral Problems" by N.D. Kopachevsky, S.G. Krein and Ngo Zuy Kan, published in 1989 by Nauka in Moscow. It includes several new problems on the oscillations of partially dissipative hydrosystems and the oscillations of visco-elastic or relaxing fluids. The work relies on the authors' and their students' works of the last 30-40 years. The readers are not supposed to be familiar with the methods of functional analysis. In the first part of the present volume, the main facts of linear operator theory relevant to linearized problems of hydrodynamics are summarized, including elements of the theories of distributions, self-adjoint operators in Hilbert spaces and in spaces with an indefinite metric, evolution equations and asymptotic methods for their solutions, the spectral theory of operator pencils. The book is particularly useful for researchers, engineers and students in fluid mechanics and mathematics interested in operator theoretical methods for the analysis of hydrodynamical problems. 24 cm. Relativistic numerical hydrodynamics / par Wilson,, James R. Publication : [S.l.] : Cambridge University Press, 2003 . 232 p. ; , Calculations of relativistic hydrodynamics are crucial to several areas of current research in the physics of supernovae and stellar collapse. This book provides an overview of the computational framework in which such calculations have been developed, with examples of applications to real physical systems. Beginning with the development of the equations and differencing schemes for special relativistic hydrodynamics, the book stresses the viability of the Euler-Lagrange approach to most astrophysical problems. It details aspects of solving the Einstein equations together with the fluid dynamics for various astrophysical systems in one, two and three dimensions. 25 cm.
