Optimization principles : practical applications to the operation and markets of the electric power industry par Rau,, Narayan S. Publication : [S.l.] Wiley-IEEE Press 2003 . 360 p. , Today's need-to-know optimization techniques, at your fingertips The use of optimization methods is familiar territory to academicians and researchers. Yet, in today's world of deregulated electricity markets, it's just as important for electric power professionals to have a solid grasp of these increasingly relied upon techniques. Making those techniques readily accessible is the hallmark of Optimization Principles: Practical Applications to the Operation and Markets of the Electric Power Industry. With deregulation, market rules and economic principles dictate that commodities be priced at the marginal value of their production. As a result, it's necessary to work with ever-more-sophisticated algorithms using optimization techniques-either for the optimal dispatch of the system itself, or for pricing commodities and the settlement of markets. Succeeding in this new environment takes a good understanding of methods that involve linear and nonlinear optimization, including optimal power flow, locational marginal prices for energy, and the auction of hedging instruments. In its comprehensive, skill-building overview of optimization techniques, Optimization Principles puts you on the same footing with algorithm-savvy software developers. Starting with a helpful look at matrix algebra fundamentals, this just-in-time reference covers: * Deregulated electricity markets: terminology and acronyms * Solution of equations, inequalities, and linear programs * Unconstrained and constrained nonlinear optimization * Applications to practical problems addressing system dispatch, market design, and material procurement * And related topics As an aid to the uninitiated, appendices provide a brief description of basic principles of electricity, and the development of network equations. Optimization Principles allows you to learn optimization methods at your own pace using Microsoft Excel or MATLAB software, and it includes an FTP web site with downloadable Excel spreadsheets and problems. After mastering these practical applications, you can then refer to chapters that highlight the theoretical background of the algorithms and resulting solutions. The book also includes a Web site with downloadable files of all example problems and solved problems. Ideal for engineers, other electric power professionals, and advanced engineering students, Optimization Principles demystifies the electric power industry under deregulation-and delivers a complete, learn-as-you-go tutorial of optimization techniques that no other resource can match. 24 cm. Representation and control of infinite dimensional systems par Bensoussan, Alain. Publication : [S.l.] Birkhäuser 2007 . 604 p. , This unified, revised second edition of a two-volume set is a self-contained account of quadratic cost optimal control for a large class of infinite-dimensional systems. The original editions received outstanding reviews, yet this new edition is more concise and self-contained. New material has been added to reflect the growth in the field over the past decade. There is a unique chapter on semigroup theory of linear operators that brings together advanced concepts and techniques which are usually treated independently. The material on delay systems and structural operators has not yet appeared anywhere in book form. 24 cm. Stability & time-optimal control of hereditary systems - with application to the economic dynamics of the us par Chukwu, E.N. Publication : [S.l.] World Scientific Pub Co Inc 2002 . 570 p. , This work offers the mathematical foundation and theory required for studying in depth the stability and optimal control of systems whose history is taken into account. In this second edition the economic application is enlarged, and explored in some depth. The application holds out the hope that full employment and high income growth will be compatible with low prices and low inflation, provided that the control matrix has full rank - in other words, that the existing controls are fully effectively used. The text concludes with a new appendix containing complete programmes, data, graphs and quantitative results for the US economy. 26 cm. Statistical methods in experimental physics par James, Frederick Publication : [S.l.] World Scientific Publishing 2006 . 345 p. , The first edition of this classic book has become the authoritative reference for physicists desiring to master the finer points of statistical data analysis. This second edition contains all the important material of the first, much of it unavailable from any other sources. In addition, many chapters have been updated with considerable new material, especially in areas concerning the theory and practice of confidence intervals, including the important Feldman-Cousins method. Both frequentist and Bayesian methodologies are presented, with a strong emphasis on techniques useful to physicists and other scientists in the interpretation of experimental data and comparison with scientific theories. This is a valuable textbook for advanced graduate students in the physical sciences as well as a reference for active researchers. 24 cm. Tabu search / par Glover,, Fred W. Publication : [S.l.] : Springer, 1998 . 408 p. ; , This book explores the meta-heuristics approach called tabu search , which is dramatically changing our ability to solve a host of problems that stretch over the realms of resource planning, telecommunications, VLSI design, financial analysis, scheduling, space planning, energy distribution, molecular engineering, logistics, pattern classification, flexible manufacturing, waste management, mineral exploration, biomedical analysis, environmental conservation and scores of other problems. The major ideas of tabu search are presented with examples that show their relevance to multiple applications. Numerous illustrations and diagrams are used to clarify principles that deserve emphasis, and that have not always been well understood or applied. The book's goal is to provide `hands-on' knowledge and insight alike, rather than to focus exclusively either on computational recipes or on abstract themes. This book is designed to be useful and accessible to researchers and practitioners in management science, industrial engineering, economics, and computer science. It can appropriately be used as a textbook in a masters course or in a doctoral seminar. Because of its emphasis on presenting ideas through illustrations and diagrams, and on identifying associated practical applications, it can also be used as a supplementary text in upper division undergraduate courses. Finally, there are many more applications of tabu search than can possibly be covered in a single book, and new ones are emerging every day. The book's goal is to provide a grounding in the essential ideas of tabu search that will allow readers to create successful applications of their own. Along with the essential ideas, understanding of advanced issues is provided, enabling researchers to go beyond today's developments and create the methods of tomorrow. 24 cm. The design of approximation algorithms par Williamson, David P. Publication : New York Cambridge University Press 2011 . xi, 504 pages , "Discrete optimization problems are everywhere, from traditional operations research planning problems, such as scheduling, facility location, and network design; to computer science problems in databases; to advertising issues in viral marketing. Yet most such problems are NP-hard. Thus unless P = NP, there are no efficient algorithms to find optimal solutions to such problems. This book shows how to design approximation algorithms: efficient algorithms that find provably near-optimal solutions. The book is organized around central algorithmic techniques for designing approximation algorithms, including greedy and local search algorithms, dynamic programming, linear and semidefinite programming, and randomization. Each chapter in the first part of the book is devoted to a single algorithmic technique, which is then applied to several different problems. The second part revisits the techniques but offers more sophisticated treatments of them. The book also covers methods for proving that optimization problems are hard to approximate. Designed as a textbook for graduate-level algorithms courses, the book will also serve as a reference for researchers interested in the heuristic solution of discrete optimization problems"-- 26 cm. Variational methods in some shape optimization problems par Bucur,, Dorin. Publication : [S.l.] Edizioni della Normale 2002 . 217 p. , The study of shape optimization problems is a very wide field, both classical, as the isoperimetric problem and Newton problem of the best aerodynamical shape show, and modern, for all the recent results obtained in the last two, three decades. The fascinating feature is that the competing objects are shapes, i.e. domains of Rn, instead of functions, as usually occurs in problems of calculus of variations. This constraint often produces additional difficulties that lead to a lack of existence of a solution and the introduction of suitable relaxed formulations of the problem. However, in a few cases an optimal solution exists, due to the special form of the cost functional and to the geometrical restriction on the class of competing domains. This volume collects the lecture notes of two courses given in the academic year 2000/01 by the authors at the University of Pisa and at the Scuola Normale Superiore respectively. The courses were mainly addressed to Ph. D. students and required a background in the topics in functional analysis that are usually taught in undergraduate courses. 24 cm.
