Chaotic vibrations : an introduction for applied scientists and engineers / par Moon,, Francis C. Publication : [S.l.] : Wiley-Interscience, 2004 . 309 p. ; , The book that brings order to chaos Fifteen years ago, Francis MoonЀ™s Chaotic Vibrations introduced, in practical language, the new ideas of nonlinear dynamics and chaos. Since then, the field has grown tremendously, and "chaos" has entered the vocabulary of not only physicists and mathematicians but also the general public. Researchers in nonlinear dynamics have broadened their scope to investigate ideas of complexity in natural and human-made systems, including networks in the brain, electric energy grids, and the Internet. With this paperback reissue of Professor MoonЀ™s classic, we hope to interest a new generation of readers intrigued by unpredictability in the laws of physics and its manifestation in the physical world in the form of chaotic dynamics. Written for engineers and applied scientists, Chaotic Vibrations gives specific examples and applications of chaotic dynamics in the physical world. It also describes how to perform both computer and physical experiments in chaotic dynamics. Topics covered include: Poincar‘̂ maps Fractal dimensions Lyapunov exponents Experiments in chaos Chaos in engineering Similar in its broad scope to James GleickЀ™s Chaos, only geared to a more technically curious reader, Chaotic Vibrations features an extensive guide to the literature, especially as it relates to more mathematically-oriented works; a glossary of nonlinear dynamics terms; a list of computer experiments; and details for a demonstration experiment on chaotic vibrations. This handy paperback version of Chaotic Vibrations arms engineers and researchers with the new tools of dynamical systems and prepares them to make their own contributions to this exciting and rapidly developing field. 24 cm. Computational nanoscience applications for molecules, clusters, and solids par Varga, Kálmán, Publication : Cambridge | New York Cambridge University Press 2011 . xii, 431 pages , "Computer simulation is an indispensable research tool in modeling, understanding and predicting nanoscale phenomena. However, the advanced computer codes used by researchers are too complicated for graduate students wanting to understand computer simulations of physical systems. This book gives students the tools to develop their own codes. Describing advanced algorithms, the book is ideal for students in computational physics, quantum mechanics, atomic and molecular physics, and condensed matter theory. It contains a wide variety of practical examples of varying complexity to help readers at all levels of experience. An algorithm library in Fortran 90, available online at www.cambridge.org/9781107001701, implements the advanced computational approaches described in the text to solve physical problems"-- 26 cm. Data analysis for physical scientists featuring Excel par Kirkup, Les. Publication : Cambridge | New York Cambridge University Press 2011 . xv, 510 pages , "The ability to summarise data, compare models and apply computer-based analysis tools are vital skills necessary for studying and working in the physical sciences. This textbook supports undergraduate students as they develop and enhance these skills. Introducing data analysis techniques, this textbook pays particular attention to the internationally recognised guidelines for calculating and expressing measurement uncertainty. This new edition has been revised to incorporate Excel® 2010. It also provides a practical approach to fitting models to data using non-linear least squares, a powerful technique which can be applied to many types of model. Worked examples using actual experimental data help students understand how the calculations apply to real situations. Over 200 in-text exercises and end-of-chapter problems give students the opportunity to use the techniques themselves and gain confidence in applying them. Answers to the exercises and problems are given at the end of the book"-- | "Thorough analysis of experimental data frequently requires extensive numerical manipulation. Many tools exist to assist in the analysis of data, ranging from the pocket calculator to specialist computer based statistics packages. Despite limited editing and display options, the pocket calculator remains a well-used tool for basic analysis due to its low cost, convenience and reliability. Intensive data analysis may require a statistics package such as Systat or Origin . As well as standard functions, such as those used to determine means and standard deviations, these packages possess advanced features routinely required by researchers and professionals. Between the extremes of the pocket calculator and specialised statistics package is the spreadsheet. While originally designed for business users, spreadsheet packages are popular with other users due to their accessibility, versatility and ease of use. The inclusion of advanced features into spreadsheets means that, in many situations, a spreadsheet is a viable alternative to a statistics package"-- 26 cm. Exact solutions and invariant subspaces of nonlinear partial differential equations in mechanics and physics par Galaktionov,, Victor A. Publication : [S.l.] Chapman and Hall/CRC 2006 . 528 p. , Exact Solutions and Invariant Subspaces of Nonlinear Partial Differential Equations in Mechanics and Physics is the first book to provide a systematic construction of exact solutions via linear invariant subspaces for nonlinear differential operators. Acting as a guide to nonlinear evolution equations and models from physics and mechanics, the book focuses on the existence of new exact solutions on linear invariant subspaces for nonlinear operators and their crucial new properties. This practical reference deals with various partial differential equations (PDEs) and models that exhibit some common nonlinear invariant features. It begins with classical as well as more recent examples of solutions on invariant subspaces. In the remainder of the book, the authors develop several techniques for constructing exact solutions of various nonlinear PDEs, including reaction-diffusion and gas dynamics models, thin-film and Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equations, nonlinear dispersion (compacton) equations, KdV-type and Harry Dym models, quasilinear magma equations, and Green-Naghdi equations. Using exact solutions, they describe the evolution properties of blow-up or extinction phenomena, finite interface propagation, and the oscillatory, changing sign behavior of weak solutions near interfaces for nonlinear PDEs of various types and orders. The techniques surveyed in Exact Solutions and Invariant Subspaces of Nonlinear Partial Differential Equations in Mechanics and Physics serve as a preliminary introduction to the general theory of nonlinear evolution PDEs of different orders and types. 24 cm. Fluid flow phenomena : a numerical toolkit / par Orlandi, Paolo. Publication : [S.l.] : Springer, 2001 . 376 p. ; , This book deals with the simulation of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations for laminar and turbulent flows. The book is limited to explaining and employing the finite difference method. It furnishes a large number of source codes which permit to play with the Navier-Stokes equations and to understand the complex physics related to fluid mechanics. Numerical simulations are useful tools to understand the complexity of the flows, which often is difficult to derive from laboratory experiments. This book, then, can be very useful to scholars doing laboratory experiments, since they often do not have extra time to study the large variety of numerical methods; furthermore they cannot spend more time in transferring one of the methods into a computer language. By means of numerical simulations, for example, insights into the vorticity field can be obtained which are difficult to obtain by measurements. This book can be used by graduate as well as undergraduate students while reading books on theoretical fluid mechanics; it teaches how to simulate the dynamics of flow fields on personal computers. This will provide a better way of understanding the theory. Two chapters on Large Eddy Simulations have been included, since this is a methodology that in the near future will allow more universal turbulence models for practical applications. The direct simulation of the Navier-Stokes equations (DNS) is simple by finite-differences, that are satisfactory to reproduce the dynamics of turbulent flows. A large part of the book is devoted to the study of homogeneous and wall turbulent flows. In the second chapter the elementary concept of finite difference is given to solve parabolic and elliptical partial differential equations. In successive chapters the 1D, 2D, and 3D Navier-Stokes equations are solved in Cartesian and cylindrical coordinates. Finally, Large Eddy Simulations are performed to check the importance of the subgrid scale models. Results for turbulent and laminar flows are discussed, with particular emphasis on vortex dynamics. This volume will be of interest to graduate students and researchers wanting to compare experiments and numerical simulations, and to workers in the mechanical and aeronautic industries. 24 cm.
