˜The œphysics of vibrations and waves, 6th edition / par Pain,, H. J. Publication : [S.l.] : Wiley, 2005 . 576 p. ; , The main theme of this highly successful book is that the transmission of energy by wave propogation is fundamental to almost every branch of physics. Therefore, besides giving students a thorough grounding in the theory of waves and vibrations, the book also demonstrates the pattern and unity of a large part of physics. This new edition has been thoroughly revised and has been redeisgned to meet the best contemporary standards. It includes new material on electron waves in solids using the Kronig-Penney model to show how their allowed energies are limited to Brillouin zones, The role of phonons is also discussed. An Optical Transform is used to demonstrate the modern method of lens testing. In the last two chapters the sections on chaos and solitons have been reduced but their essential contents remain. As with earlier editions, the book has a large number of problems together with hints on how to solve them. The Physics of Vibrations and Waves, 6th Edition will prove invaluable for students taking a first full course in the subject across a variety of disciplines particularly physics, engineering and mathematics. 25 cm. Publication : [S.l.] : Springer, 2005 . 292 p. ; , The Quantum Mechanics Solver uniquely illustrates the application of quantum mechanical concepts to various fields of modern physics. It aims at encouraging the reader to apply quantum mechanics to research problems in fields such as molecular physics, condensed matter physics or laser physics. Advanced undergraduates and graduate students will find a rich and challenging source of material for further exploration. This book consists of a series of problems concerning present-day experimental or theoretical questions on quantum mechanics. All of these problems are based on actual physical examples, even if sometimes the mathematical structure of the models under consideration is simplified intentionally in order to get hold of the physics more rapidly. The new edition features new themes, such as the progress in measuring neutrino oscillations, quantum boxes, the quantum thermometer etc. Secondly, it includes a brief summary on the basics of quantum mechanics and the formalism we use. Finally, the problems under three main themes: Elementary Particles, Nuclei and Atoms; Quantum Entanglement and Measurement; and Complex Systems. 24 cm. Analytical methods for problems of molecular transport / par Ivchenko, I.N. Publication : [S.l.] : Springer, 2007 . 409 p. ; , The Kinetic Theory of Gases has applications in many areas of science and technology as well as in our understandings of many natural processes and phenomena from the nano-scale up to the cosmic-scale. Some of the fields and topics affected include manufacturing, health care, weather, defence, pollution, aerospace science and engineering, and others. In particular, the interactions of rarefied gases with surfaces are of great interest because such interactions can have pronounced effects on the behaviour exhibited by those systems in all of the above fields. Such fundamental things as the transfer of mass, momentum, and energy between the components of a system can be significantly altered by such interactions. Collectively this transfer is typically described in terms of Rarefied Gas Dynamics and Transport Theory which generally go hand-in-hand with the Kinetic Theory of Gases. When this transport involves small particles suspended in a gas such as air, it is typically termed Aerosol Mechanics. Thus, this book should prove to be a very useful tool in virtually all application areas involving the Kinetic Theory of Gases, Rarefied Gas Dynamics, Transport Theory, and Aerosol Mechanics. This book is designed to serve a dual function. It is intended that it be capable of serving as a teaching instrument, either in a classroom environment or independently, for the study of basic analytical methods and mathematical techniques that may be used in the Kinetic Theory of Gases and is primarily suitable for use in graduate level physics and engineering courses on the subject. This book should also prove to be useful as a reference for scientists and engineers working in the fields of Rarefied Gas Dynamics and Aerosol Mechanics. In addition, the material in this book may prove to be of interest to individuals working in such areas as Physical Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or any other applied discipline in which gas-surface interactions can be expected to play a significant role. 24 cm. Chaotic vibrations : an introduction for applied scientists and engineers / par Moon,, Francis C. Publication : [S.l.] : Wiley-Interscience, 2004 . 309 p. ; , The book that brings order to chaos Fifteen years ago, Francis MoonЀ™s Chaotic Vibrations introduced, in practical language, the new ideas of nonlinear dynamics and chaos. Since then, the field has grown tremendously, and "chaos" has entered the vocabulary of not only physicists and mathematicians but also the general public. Researchers in nonlinear dynamics have broadened their scope to investigate ideas of complexity in natural and human-made systems, including networks in the brain, electric energy grids, and the Internet. With this paperback reissue of Professor MoonЀ™s classic, we hope to interest a new generation of readers intrigued by unpredictability in the laws of physics and its manifestation in the physical world in the form of chaotic dynamics. Written for engineers and applied scientists, Chaotic Vibrations gives specific examples and applications of chaotic dynamics in the physical world. It also describes how to perform both computer and physical experiments in chaotic dynamics. Topics covered include: Poincar‘̂ maps Fractal dimensions Lyapunov exponents Experiments in chaos Chaos in engineering Similar in its broad scope to James GleickЀ™s Chaos, only geared to a more technically curious reader, Chaotic Vibrations features an extensive guide to the literature, especially as it relates to more mathematically-oriented works; a glossary of nonlinear dynamics terms; a list of computer experiments; and details for a demonstration experiment on chaotic vibrations. This handy paperback version of Chaotic Vibrations arms engineers and researchers with the new tools of dynamical systems and prepares them to make their own contributions to this exciting and rapidly developing field. 24 cm. Critical excitation methods in earthquake engineering / par Takewaki,, Izuru. Publication : [S.l.] : Elsevier Science, 2007 . 296 p. ; , Since the occurrence of earthquakes and their properties are very uncertain even with the present knowledge, it is too difficult to define reasonable design ground motions especially for important buildings. In the seismic resistant design of building structures, the concept of 'performance-based design' has become a new paradigm guaranteeing the maximum satisfaction of building owners. The quality and reliability of the performance-based design certainly depend on the scientific rationality of design ground motions. In order to overcome this problem, a new paradigm has to be posed. To the author's knowledge, the concept of 'critical excitation' and the structural design based upon this concept can become one of such new paradigms. This book introduces a new probabilistic and energy-based critical excitation approach to overcome several problems in the scientific and rational modelling of ground motions. The author hopes that this book will help the development of new seismic-resistant design methods of buildings for such unpredicted or unpredictable ground motions. - First comprehensive book for critical excitation methods - Including updated, cutting-edge research - Applicable to other worst-case analysis problems - Including comprehensive review of critical excitation methods - Including verification by comprehensive recorded ground motions. 25 cm. Dynamics of viscous compressible fluids / par Feireisl,, Eduard. Publication : [S.l.] : Oxford University Press, USA, 2004 . 224 p. ; , The book develops the most recent ideas and concepts of the mathematical theory of viscous, compressible and heat conducting fluids. Two main goals are pursued: (I) global existence theory within the framework of variational (weak) solutions for the full system of the Navier-Stokes equations supplemented with large data; and (II) optimal existence results for the barotropic flows with respect to the available a priori estimates. The book is intended to be a compact and self-contained presentation of the most recent results of the mathematical theory of viscous compressible fluids. In order to place the text in better perspective, each chapter is concluded with a section devoted to historical notes including references to all-important and new results. The material is by no means intended to be the last word on the subject but rather to include possible directions of future research. It is aimed at research mathematicians, theoretical physicists, engineers and graduate students. 24 cm. Fluid flow phenomena : a numerical toolkit / par Orlandi, Paolo. Publication : [S.l.] : Springer, 2001 . 376 p. ; , This book deals with the simulation of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations for laminar and turbulent flows. The book is limited to explaining and employing the finite difference method. It furnishes a large number of source codes which permit to play with the Navier-Stokes equations and to understand the complex physics related to fluid mechanics. Numerical simulations are useful tools to understand the complexity of the flows, which often is difficult to derive from laboratory experiments. This book, then, can be very useful to scholars doing laboratory experiments, since they often do not have extra time to study the large variety of numerical methods; furthermore they cannot spend more time in transferring one of the methods into a computer language. By means of numerical simulations, for example, insights into the vorticity field can be obtained which are difficult to obtain by measurements. This book can be used by graduate as well as undergraduate students while reading books on theoretical fluid mechanics; it teaches how to simulate the dynamics of flow fields on personal computers. This will provide a better way of understanding the theory. Two chapters on Large Eddy Simulations have been included, since this is a methodology that in the near future will allow more universal turbulence models for practical applications. The direct simulation of the Navier-Stokes equations (DNS) is simple by finite-differences, that are satisfactory to reproduce the dynamics of turbulent flows. A large part of the book is devoted to the study of homogeneous and wall turbulent flows. In the second chapter the elementary concept of finite difference is given to solve parabolic and elliptical partial differential equations. In successive chapters the 1D, 2D, and 3D Navier-Stokes equations are solved in Cartesian and cylindrical coordinates. Finally, Large Eddy Simulations are performed to check the importance of the subgrid scale models. Results for turbulent and laminar flows are discussed, with particular emphasis on vortex dynamics. This volume will be of interest to graduate students and researchers wanting to compare experiments and numerical simulations, and to workers in the mechanical and aeronautic industries. 24 cm.
