Dynamic plasticity / par Cristescu, N. D. Publication : [S.l.] : World Scientific Publishing Company, 2007 . 480 p. ; , This book presents a self-contained and comprehensive look at the field of dynamic plasticity for researchers and graduates in mechanical engineering. Drawing on the author's long career in the field, the book greatly extends material from the 1967 original edition with the addition of fresh research chapters as well as a full introduction to the elementary theory of plasticity. 26 cm. Fluid flow phenomena : a numerical toolkit / par Orlandi, Paolo. Publication : [S.l.] : Springer, 2001 . 376 p. ; , This book deals with the simulation of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations for laminar and turbulent flows. The book is limited to explaining and employing the finite difference method. It furnishes a large number of source codes which permit to play with the Navier-Stokes equations and to understand the complex physics related to fluid mechanics. Numerical simulations are useful tools to understand the complexity of the flows, which often is difficult to derive from laboratory experiments. This book, then, can be very useful to scholars doing laboratory experiments, since they often do not have extra time to study the large variety of numerical methods; furthermore they cannot spend more time in transferring one of the methods into a computer language. By means of numerical simulations, for example, insights into the vorticity field can be obtained which are difficult to obtain by measurements. This book can be used by graduate as well as undergraduate students while reading books on theoretical fluid mechanics; it teaches how to simulate the dynamics of flow fields on personal computers. This will provide a better way of understanding the theory. Two chapters on Large Eddy Simulations have been included, since this is a methodology that in the near future will allow more universal turbulence models for practical applications. The direct simulation of the Navier-Stokes equations (DNS) is simple by finite-differences, that are satisfactory to reproduce the dynamics of turbulent flows. A large part of the book is devoted to the study of homogeneous and wall turbulent flows. In the second chapter the elementary concept of finite difference is given to solve parabolic and elliptical partial differential equations. In successive chapters the 1D, 2D, and 3D Navier-Stokes equations are solved in Cartesian and cylindrical coordinates. Finally, Large Eddy Simulations are performed to check the importance of the subgrid scale models. Results for turbulent and laminar flows are discussed, with particular emphasis on vortex dynamics. This volume will be of interest to graduate students and researchers wanting to compare experiments and numerical simulations, and to workers in the mechanical and aeronautic industries. 24 cm. Non-linear theory of elasticity and optimal design / par Ratner,, L.W. Publication : [S.l.] : Elsevier Science, 2003 . 279 p. ; , In order to select an optimal structure among possible similar structures, one needs to compare the elastic behavior of the structures. A new criterion that describes elastic behavior is the rate of change of deformation. Using this criterion, the safe dimensions of a structure that are required by the stress distributed in a structure can be calculated. The new non-linear theory of elasticity allows one to determine the actual individual limit of elasticity/failure of a structure using a simple non-destructive method of measurement of deformation on the model of a structure while presently it can be done only with a destructive test for each structure. For building and explaining the theory, a new logical structure was introduced as the basis of the theory. One of the important physical implications of this logic is that it describes mathematically the universal domain of the possible stable physical relations. 23 cm. Speakable and unspeakable in quantum mechanics : collected papers on quantum philosophy / par Bell, J. S. Publication : [S.l.] : Cambridge University Press, 2004 . 288 p. ; , This book comprises all of John Bell's published and unpublished papers in the field of quantum mechanics, including two papers that appeared after the first edition was published. It also contains a preface written for the first edition, and an introduction by Alain Aspect that puts into context Bell's great contribution to the quantum philosophy debate. One of the leading expositors and interpreters of modern quantum theory, John Bell played a major role in the development of our current understanding of the profound nature of quantum concepts. Statistical physics : including applications to condensed matter / par Hermann, Claudine. Publication : [S.l.] : Springer, 2005 . 278 p. ; , Statistical Physics bridges the properties of a macroscopic system and the microscopic behavior of its constituting particles, otherwise impossible due to the giant magnitude of Avogadro's number. Numerous systems of today's key technologies -- as e.g. semiconductors or lasers -- are macroscopic quantum objects; only statistical physics allows for understanding their fundamentals. Therefore, this graduate text also focuses on particular applications such as the properties of electrons in solids with applications, and radiation thermodynamics and the greenhouse effect. 24 cm. Waves and compressible flow / par Ockendon,, Hilary. Publication : [S.l.] : Springer, 2004 . 188 p. ; , This books aims to provide students and rsearchers with a basis for understanding the wide range of wave phenomena with which any mathematician may be confronted in applications. Compressible flow is the main focus of the book however the authors show how wave phenomena in electromagentism and solid mechanics can be treated using similar mathematical methods. This book originated from a course at Oxford University and previous book by H Ockendon and R Taylor entitled Inviscid Fluid Flows. This monograph has been retitled and revised throughly to reflect scientific interest. The book has exercises at end of each chapter and should appeal to senior undergraduate and graduate students interested in fluid mechanics. 25 cm.
