Laser aided diagnostics of gases and plasmas / par Muraoka,, K. Publication : [S.l.] : Taylor & Francis, 2002 . 200 p. ; , Laser-Aided Diagnostics of Gases and Plasmas is an updated and revised translation of the original Japanese edition. The authors have taken a unique approach in treating laser aided diagnostics as a unified subject instead of the usual and disjointed approach of describing each application as a totally separate system. In taking this approach, they highlight the relative strengths of each method and show how they can compliment each other in the study of gases and plasmas. The first part provides a general introduction to the laser-aided study of gases and plasmas, including the various principles and hardware needed for each method whilst the second part describes the applications of each general system in detail. This book will provide a useful tool for a wide spectrum of researchers, both academic and industrial, involved in the analysis and diagnostics of gases and plasmas and give a deeper insight and understanding of the various options and methods available when making such studies. 24 cm. Mathematical analysis and numerical methods for science and technology : physical origins and classical methods / Volume 1 : par Dautray, Robert. Publication : [S.l.] : Springer, 2000 . 722 p. ; , These 6 volumes - the result of a 10 year collaboration between the authors, two of France's leading scientists and both distinguished international figures - compile the mathematical knowledge required by researchers in mechanics, physics, engineering, chemistry and other branches of application of mathematics for the theoretical and numerical resolution of physical models on computers. Since the publication in 1924 of the "Methoden der mathematischen Physik" by Courant and Hilbert, there has been no other comprehensive and up-to-date publication presenting the mathematical tools needed in applications of mathematics in directly implementable form. The advent of large computers has in the meantime revolutionised methods of computation and made this gap in the literature intolerable: the objective of the present work is to fill just this gap. Many phenomena in physical mathematics may be modeled by a system of partial differential equations in distributed systems:! a model here means a set of equations, which together with given boundary data and, if the phenomenon is evolving in time, initial data, defines the system. The advent of high-speed computers has made it possible for the first time to calculate values from models accurately and rapidly. Researchers and engineers thus have a crucial means of using numerical results to modify and adapt arguments and experiments along the way. Every facet of technical and industrial activity has been affected by these developments. Modeling by distributed systems now also supports work in many areas of physics (plasmas, new materials, astrophysics, geophysics), chemistry and mechanics and is finding increasing use in the life sciences. The main physical examples examined in the 6 volumes are presented in Chapter I: Classical Fluids and the Navier-Stokes System; Linear Elasticity, Linear Viscoelasticity, Electromagnetism and Maxwell's Equation, Neutronics, and Quantum Physics. Then a first examin! ation of the mathematical model. 24 cm. Date : 2000 Disponibilité : Exemplaires disponibles: La bibliothèque des Sciences Exactes et Naturelles (1),

Non-linear theory of elasticity and optimal design / par Ratner,, L.W. Publication : [S.l.] : Elsevier Science, 2003 . 279 p. ; , In order to select an optimal structure among possible similar structures, one needs to compare the elastic behavior of the structures. A new criterion that describes elastic behavior is the rate of change of deformation. Using this criterion, the safe dimensions of a structure that are required by the stress distributed in a structure can be calculated. The new non-linear theory of elasticity allows one to determine the actual individual limit of elasticity/failure of a structure using a simple non-destructive method of measurement of deformation on the model of a structure while presently it can be done only with a destructive test for each structure. For building and explaining the theory, a new logical structure was introduced as the basis of the theory. One of the important physical implications of this logic is that it describes mathematically the universal domain of the possible stable physical relations. 23 cm. Nonlinear dynamics of rotating shallow water : methods and advances /   Publication : Amsterdam : Elsevier Science Limited, 2007 . 1 online resource (viii, 391 pages). , Incorporates analytical, numerical and experimental approaches in the geophysical fluid dynamics context Combination of essentials in GFD, of the description of analytical, numerical and experimental methods (tutorial part), and new results obtained by these methods (original part) Provides the link between GFD and mechanics (averaging method, the method of normal forms); GFD and nonlinear physics (shocks, solitons, modons, anomalous transport, periodic nonlinear waves). | Preface -- 1. V. Zeitlin, Introduction: fundamentals of rotating shallow water model in the geophysical fluid dynamics perspective -- 2. G. Reznik and V. Zeitlin, Asymptotic methods with applications to the fast-slow splitting and the geostrophic adjustment -- 3. S. Medvedev, The method of normal forms and fast-slow splitting -- 4. F. Bouchut, Efficient numerical finite-volume schemes for shallow-water models -- 5. V. Zeitlin, Nonlinear wave phenomena in rotating shallow water with applications to geostrophic adjustment -- 6. A. Stegner, Experimental reality of geostrophic adjustment. | The rotating shallow water (RSW) model is of wide use as a conceptual tool in geophysical fluid dynamics (GFD), because, in spite of its simplicity, it contains all essential ingredients of atmosphere and ocean dynamics at the synoptic scale, especially in its two- (or multi- ) layer version. The book describes recent advances in understanding (in the framework of RSW and related models) of some fundamental GFD problems, such as existence of the slow manifold, dynamical splitting of fast (inertia-gravity waves) and slow (vortices, Rossby waves) motions, nonlinear geostrophic adjustment and wave emission, the role of essentially nonlinear wave phenomena. The specificity of the book is that analytical, numerical, and experimental approaches are presented together and complement each other. Special attention is paid on explaining the methodology, e.g. | Multiple time-scale asymptotic expansions, averaging and removal of resonances, in what concerns theory, high-resolution finite-volume schemes, in what concerns numerical simulations, and turntable experiments with stratified fluids, in what concerns laboratory simulations. A general introduction into GFD is given at the beginning to introduce the problematics for non-specialists. At the same time, recent new results on nonlinear geostrophic adjustment, nonlinear waves, and equatorial dynamics, including some exact results on the existence of the slow manifold, wave breaking, and nonlinear wave solutions are presented for the first time in a systematic manner.
