Compressibility of ultra-soft soil par Bo, Myint Win. Publication : Hackensack, N.J. World Scientific Publishing Company 2008 . 287 p. , The formation of an alluvial clay deposit normally goes through sedimentation and consolidation. While the bottom portion is undergoing self-weight consolidation, sedimentation continues to take place at the top. However, the compression behavior of such deposits upon loading is not well understood. This book describes the compression behavior of ultra-soft soil upon additional load application. Various types of laboratory compression tests suitable for this type of soil are discussed, such as tests using small- and large-scale consolidometers, hydraulic Rowe cells under different drainage conditions, constant rate of loading and constant rate of strain tests. It also explains how to determine the transition point, which differentiates the two distinct behaviors between slurry state and soil state deformation. Methods to determine the compression indices and coefficients of consolidation at different stress ranges, which are required for the prediction of magnitude of settlement and time rate of settlement, are developed. An equation for predicting settlement of ultra-soft soil in both the slurry and soil stages is elaborated upon. These proposed methods of characterization or analyses -- which are validated against published data, laboratory measurements and a case study -- serve as useful tools for designing and constructing embankments and for carrying out land reclamation on ultra-soft soil. Contents: Sedimentation and Consolidation; Models and Analogy; Characterization of Physical Properties and Mineralogy of the Soil; Compression Tests with Large Scale Consolidometer; Compression Test on Slurry with Small-Scale Consolidometer; Compression Tests on Ultra-Soft Soil with Hydraulic Consolidation Cell; Continuous Loading Tests on Ultra-Soft Soil; Constant Rate of Strain Test on Ultra-Soft Soil; Verification of Proposed Formulae and Models with Laboratory Measurements; Case Study. 24 cm. Concepts in thermal physics par Blundell,, Stephen J. Publication : [S.l.] Oxford University Press, USA 2009 . 516 p. , An understanding of thermal physics is crucial to much of modern physics, chemistry and engineering. This book provides a modern introduction to the main principles that are foundational to thermal physics, thermodynamics and statistical mechanics. The key concepts are carefully presented in a clear way, and new ideas are illustrated with copious worked examples as well as a description of the historical background to their discovery. Applications are presented to subjects as diverse as stellar astrophysics, information and communication theory, condensed matter physics and climate change. Each chapter concludes with detailed exercises. The second edition of this popular textbook maintains the structure and lively style of the first edition but extends its coverage of thermodynamics and statistical mechanics to include several new topics, including osmosis, diffusion problems, Bayes theorem, radiative transfer, the Ising model and Monte Carlo methods. New examples and exercises have been added throughout. 25 cm. Date : 2009 Disponibilité : Exemplaires disponibles: La bibliothèque des Sciences Exactes et Naturelles (1),

Continuum mechanics and thermodynamics from fundamental concepts to governing equations par Tadmor, Ellad B., Publication : Cambridge, UK | New York Cambridge University Press 2012 . xxii, 350 pages , "Continuum mechanics and thermodynamics are foundational theories of many fields of science and engineering. This book presents a fresh perspective on these fundamental topics, connecting micro- and nanoscopic theories and emphasizing topics relevant to understanding solid-state thermo-mechanical behavior. Providing clear, in-depth coverage, the book gives a self-contained treatment of topics directly related to nonlinear materials modeling. It starts with vectors and tensors, finite deformation kinematics, the fundamental balance and conservation laws, and classical thermodynamics. It then discusses the principles of constitutive theory and examples of constitutive models, presents a foundational treatment of energy principles and stability theory, and concludes with example closed-form solutions and the essentials of finite elements. Together with its companion book, Modeling Materials, (Cambridge University Press, 2011), this work presents the fundamentals of multiscale materials modeling for graduate students and researchers in physics, materials science, chemistry and engineering"-- 26 cm. Critical excitation methods in earthquake engineering / par Takewaki,, Izuru. Publication : [S.l.] : Elsevier Science, 2007 . 296 p. ; , Since the occurrence of earthquakes and their properties are very uncertain even with the present knowledge, it is too difficult to define reasonable design ground motions especially for important buildings. In the seismic resistant design of building structures, the concept of 'performance-based design' has become a new paradigm guaranteeing the maximum satisfaction of building owners. The quality and reliability of the performance-based design certainly depend on the scientific rationality of design ground motions. In order to overcome this problem, a new paradigm has to be posed. To the author's knowledge, the concept of 'critical excitation' and the structural design based upon this concept can become one of such new paradigms. This book introduces a new probabilistic and energy-based critical excitation approach to overcome several problems in the scientific and rational modelling of ground motions. The author hopes that this book will help the development of new seismic-resistant design methods of buildings for such unpredicted or unpredictable ground motions. - First comprehensive book for critical excitation methods - Including updated, cutting-edge research - Applicable to other worst-case analysis problems - Including comprehensive review of critical excitation methods - Including verification by comprehensive recorded ground motions. 25 cm. Dynamics of viscous compressible fluids / par Feireisl,, Eduard. Publication : [S.l.] : Oxford University Press, USA, 2004 . 224 p. ; , The book develops the most recent ideas and concepts of the mathematical theory of viscous, compressible and heat conducting fluids. Two main goals are pursued: (I) global existence theory within the framework of variational (weak) solutions for the full system of the Navier-Stokes equations supplemented with large data; and (II) optimal existence results for the barotropic flows with respect to the available a priori estimates. The book is intended to be a compact and self-contained presentation of the most recent results of the mathematical theory of viscous compressible fluids. In order to place the text in better perspective, each chapter is concluded with a section devoted to historical notes including references to all-important and new results. The material is by no means intended to be the last word on the subject but rather to include possible directions of future research. It is aimed at research mathematicians, theoretical physicists, engineers and graduate students. 24 cm.
