˜The œphysics of vibrations and waves, 6th edition / par Pain,, H. J. Publication : [S.l.] : Wiley, 2005 . 576 p. ; , The main theme of this highly successful book is that the transmission of energy by wave propogation is fundamental to almost every branch of physics. Therefore, besides giving students a thorough grounding in the theory of waves and vibrations, the book also demonstrates the pattern and unity of a large part of physics. This new edition has been thoroughly revised and has been redeisgned to meet the best contemporary standards. It includes new material on electron waves in solids using the Kronig-Penney model to show how their allowed energies are limited to Brillouin zones, The role of phonons is also discussed. An Optical Transform is used to demonstrate the modern method of lens testing. In the last two chapters the sections on chaos and solitons have been reduced but their essential contents remain. As with earlier editions, the book has a large number of problems together with hints on how to solve them. The Physics of Vibrations and Waves, 6th Edition will prove invaluable for students taking a first full course in the subject across a variety of disciplines particularly physics, engineering and mathematics. 25 cm. ˜The œquantum mechanics solver : how to apply quantum theory to modern physics / par Basdevant, Jean-Louis. Publication : [S.l.] : Springer, 2005 . 292 p. ; , The Quantum Mechanics Solver uniquely illustrates the application of quantum mechanical concepts to various fields of modern physics. It aims at encouraging the reader to apply quantum mechanics to research problems in fields such as molecular physics, condensed matter physics or laser physics. Advanced undergraduates and graduate students will find a rich and challenging source of material for further exploration. This book consists of a series of problems concerning present-day experimental or theoretical questions on quantum mechanics. All of these problems are based on actual physical examples, even if sometimes the mathematical structure of the models under consideration is simplified intentionally in order to get hold of the physics more rapidly. The new edition features new themes, such as the progress in measuring neutrino oscillations, quantum boxes, the quantum thermometer etc. Secondly, it includes a brief summary on the basics of quantum mechanics and the formalism we use. Finally, the problems under three main themes: Elementary Particles, Nuclei and Atoms; Quantum Entanglement and Measurement; and Complex Systems. 24 cm. A geometric approach to thermomechanics of dissipating continua par Rakotomanana, Lalao. Publication : [S.l.] Birkhuser, . 280 p. , This monograph focuses on the modeling of continua that exhibit the property of singularities in fields. A rational theory of continuum thermomechanics that takes into account the existence and distribution of scalar and vector discontinuities is presented. Guiding the work is the notion that discontinuities should be modeled by the torsion and curvature tensors (Cartan), thus forming an attractive alternative way of representing dissipating continua with singularities. Also emphasized in this study is the relationship between singularities and certain irreversible properties that occur in solid and fluid models. The required mathematical background is given in several appendices, although some basic understanding of differential geometry and tensor analysis would be helpful. The book is largely self-contained and should serve a readership of graduate students, researchers, and engineers in applied mathematics, mechanics, and physics. 23 cm. A kinetic view of statistical physics par Krapivsky, Pavel L. Publication : Cambridge | New York Cambridge University Press 2010 . xv, 488 pages , "Aimed at graduate students, this book explores some of the core phenomena in non-equilibrium statistical physics. It focuses on the development and application of theoretical methods to help students develop their problem-solving skills. The book begins with microscopic transport processes: diffusion, collision-driven phenomena, and exclusion. It then presents the kinetics of aggregation, fragmentation and adsorption, where the basic phenomenology and solution techniques are emphasized. The following chapters cover kinetic spin systems, both from a discrete and a continuum perspective, the role of disorder in non-equilibrium processes, hysteresis from the non-equilibrium perspective, the kinetics of chemical reactions, and the properties of complex networks. The book contains 200 exercises to test students' understanding of the subject. A link to a website hosted by the authors, containing supplementary material including solutions to some of the exercises, can be found at www.cambridge.org/9780521851039"-- 26 cm. Advanced mechanics and general relativity par Franklin, Joel Publication : Cambridge | New York Cambridge University Press 2010 . xviii, 367 pages , "Aimed at advanced undergraduates with background knowledge of classical mechanics and electricity and magnetism, this textbook presents both the particle dynamics relevant to general relativity, and the field dynamics necessary to understand the theory. Focusing on action extremization, the book develops the structure and predictions of general relativity by analogy with familiar physical systems. Topics ranging from classical field theory to minimal surfaces and relativistic strings are covered in a homogenous manner. Nearly 150 exercises and numerous examples throughout the textbook enable students to test their understanding of the material covered. A tensor manipulation package to help students overcome the computational challenge associated with general relativity is available on a site hosted by the author"-- 26 cm. Advances in fatigue, fracture and damage assessment of materials par Varvani-Farahani, A. Publication : Southampton | Boston WIT Press 2005 . vii, 502 p. , The damage analysis of engineering materials and components is a prime concern in the durability assessment and integrity of engineering components in service. Engineering materials are routinely subjected to failure in a wide variety of applications in aeronautical, electronic, automotive, nuclear plant, petroleum and transportation industries. This book presents the fundamental elements and theories in fracture and damage analysis, plus the recent research and advances in the development of the analytical and practical approaches required to assess the materials damage and the durability of structures. The wide-ranging discussion on damage theories and practical issues in damage analysis will be of benefit to researchers, post-graduate students and engineers in practical sectors of durability and failure of materials and structures. 23 cm. An introduction to fluid mechanics and transport phenomena par Hauke, G. Publication : [S.l.] Springer 2008 . 316 p. , This book presents the foundations of fluid mechanics and transport phenomena in a concise way. It is suitable as an introduction to the subject as it contains many examples, proposed problems and a chapter for self-evaluation. The solutions to all problems are displayed in the corresponding appendix. The content is divided into four parts: fundamentals, conservation principles, dimensional analysis and transport phenomena at interfaces. The transport phenomena of momentum, heat and mass are presented from a rigorous fluid mechanics point of view, and they are explained using a unified, systematic approach, including the analogies between the various transport phenomena. 24 cm.
