An Introduction to scientific computing : twelve computational projects solved with matlab / par Danaila, Ionut. Publication : [S.l.] : Springer, 2006 . 294 p. ; , This book provides twelve computational projects aimed at numerically solving problems from a broad range of applications including Fluid Mechanics, Chemistry, Elasticity, Thermal Science, Computer Aided Design, Signal and Image Processing. For each project the reader is guided through the typical steps of scientific computing from physical and mathematical description of the problem, to numerical formulation and programming and finally to critical discussion of numerical results. Considerable emphasis is placed on practical issues of computational methods. The last section of each project contains the solutions to all proposed exercises and guides the reader in using the MATLAB scripts. The mathematical framework provides a basic foundation in the subject of numerical analysis of partial differential equations and main discretization techniques, such as finite differences, finite elements, spectral methods and wavelets). The book is primarily intended as a graduate-level text in applied mathematics, but it may also be used by students in engineering or physical sciences. It will also be a useful reference for researchers and practicing engineers. 24 cm. Date : 2006 Disponibilité : Exemplaires disponibles: La bibliothèque des Sciences Exactes et Naturelles (1),

Analytical methods for problems of molecular transport / par Ivchenko, I.N. Publication : [S.l.] : Springer, 2007 . 409 p. ; , The Kinetic Theory of Gases has applications in many areas of science and technology as well as in our understandings of many natural processes and phenomena from the nano-scale up to the cosmic-scale. Some of the fields and topics affected include manufacturing, health care, weather, defence, pollution, aerospace science and engineering, and others. In particular, the interactions of rarefied gases with surfaces are of great interest because such interactions can have pronounced effects on the behaviour exhibited by those systems in all of the above fields. Such fundamental things as the transfer of mass, momentum, and energy between the components of a system can be significantly altered by such interactions. Collectively this transfer is typically described in terms of Rarefied Gas Dynamics and Transport Theory which generally go hand-in-hand with the Kinetic Theory of Gases. When this transport involves small particles suspended in a gas such as air, it is typically termed Aerosol Mechanics. Thus, this book should prove to be a very useful tool in virtually all application areas involving the Kinetic Theory of Gases, Rarefied Gas Dynamics, Transport Theory, and Aerosol Mechanics. This book is designed to serve a dual function. It is intended that it be capable of serving as a teaching instrument, either in a classroom environment or independently, for the study of basic analytical methods and mathematical techniques that may be used in the Kinetic Theory of Gases and is primarily suitable for use in graduate level physics and engineering courses on the subject. This book should also prove to be useful as a reference for scientists and engineers working in the fields of Rarefied Gas Dynamics and Aerosol Mechanics. In addition, the material in this book may prove to be of interest to individuals working in such areas as Physical Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or any other applied discipline in which gas-surface interactions can be expected to play a significant role. 24 cm. Asymptotics for dissipative nonlinear equations / par Hayashi, Nakao. Publication : [S.l.] : Springer, 2006 . 562 p. ; , Many of problems of the natural sciences lead to nonlinear partial differential equations. However, only a few of them have succeeded in being solved explicitly. Therefore different methods of qualitative analysis such as the asymptotic methods play a very important role. This is the first book in the world literature giving a systematic development of a general asymptotic theory for nonlinear partial differential equations with dissipation. Many typical well-known equations are considered as examples, such as: nonlinear heat equation, KdVB equation, nonlinear damped wave equation, Landau-Ginzburg equation, Sobolev type equations, systems of equations of Boussinesq, Navier-Stokes and others. 24 cm. Atomic physics : an exploration through problems and solutions / par Budker, Dmitry. Publication : [S.l.] : Oxford University Press, USA, 2004 . 456 p. ; , This book is intended for advanced undergraduate, graduate students and researchers who are interested in Atomic, Molecular and Optical (AMO) Physics. Written as a collection of problems, hints and solutions, the book will provide help in learning about both fundamental and applied aspects of this vast field of knowledge, where rapid and exciting developments are currently taking place. The authors tough upon a broad spectrum of phenomena and techniques and adopt an experimentalist's approach, by avoiding formal calculations whenever possible in favor of "back-of-the-envelope" estimates, symmetry arguments and physical analogies. While complete coverage of all AMO Physics is not attempted, there are chapters on atomic structure, behavior of atoms and molecules in external electromagnetic fields, atomic collisions and experimental techniques. Special attention is given to a discussion of ideas and experimental methods in several "hot areas", a few of these being cold atoms and Bose-Einstein condensates, tests of fundamental symmetries, atomic magnetometers and frequency comb metrology with ultra-short laser pulses. 24 cm. Chaotic vibrations : an introduction for applied scientists and engineers / par Moon,, Francis C. Publication : [S.l.] : Wiley-Interscience, 2004 . 309 p. ; , The book that brings order to chaos Fifteen years ago, Francis MoonЀ™s Chaotic Vibrations introduced, in practical language, the new ideas of nonlinear dynamics and chaos. Since then, the field has grown tremendously, and "chaos" has entered the vocabulary of not only physicists and mathematicians but also the general public. Researchers in nonlinear dynamics have broadened their scope to investigate ideas of complexity in natural and human-made systems, including networks in the brain, electric energy grids, and the Internet. With this paperback reissue of Professor MoonЀ™s classic, we hope to interest a new generation of readers intrigued by unpredictability in the laws of physics and its manifestation in the physical world in the form of chaotic dynamics. Written for engineers and applied scientists, Chaotic Vibrations gives specific examples and applications of chaotic dynamics in the physical world. It also describes how to perform both computer and physical experiments in chaotic dynamics. Topics covered include: Poincar‘̂ maps Fractal dimensions Lyapunov exponents Experiments in chaos Chaos in engineering Similar in its broad scope to James GleickЀ™s Chaos, only geared to a more technically curious reader, Chaotic Vibrations features an extensive guide to the literature, especially as it relates to more mathematically-oriented works; a glossary of nonlinear dynamics terms; a list of computer experiments; and details for a demonstration experiment on chaotic vibrations. This handy paperback version of Chaotic Vibrations arms engineers and researchers with the new tools of dynamical systems and prepares them to make their own contributions to this exciting and rapidly developing field. 24 cm. Computing in nonlinear media & automata collectives / par Adamatzky,, Andrew. Publication : [S.l.] : Taylor & Francis, 2001 . 395 p. ; , The book gives an account of new ways to design massively parallel computing devices in advanced mathematical models (such as cellular automata and lattice swarms), and from unconventional materials, for example chemical solutions, bio-polymers and excitable media. The subject of this book is computing in excitable and reaction-diffusion media. This is one approach to novel computing methods. Other approaches include quantum and evolutionary computation, and swarm optimization. The book explains how to design computing devices in nonlinear media. This is achieved in three steps. First, cellular automaton models of reaction-diffusion and excitable computing are built. Second, natural analogies of simulated phenomena are sought. Third, working prototypes of laboratory processors are fabricated. Throughout the book it is assumed a computation is implemented using spreading waves and spatially interacting reagents. The book is full of examples of computation in cellular automata, swarms of mobile machines, thin-layer chemical liquids, insect societies, solitons, breathers and other wonders of Nature. In this book computer scientists and engineers will find blueprints inspired by Nature for the design of novel computing devices. Mathematicians will find exciting reasons to theorise. Physicists and chemists will be surprised and pleased to find that the systems they study can be used in completely new contexts. Biologists will discover that results of their field experiments also give solutions for celebrated mathematical problems. 25 cm.
