Computing in nonlinear media & automata collectives / par Adamatzky,, Andrew. Publication : [S.l.] : Taylor & Francis, 2001 . 395 p. ; , The book gives an account of new ways to design massively parallel computing devices in advanced mathematical models (such as cellular automata and lattice swarms), and from unconventional materials, for example chemical solutions, bio-polymers and excitable media. The subject of this book is computing in excitable and reaction-diffusion media. This is one approach to novel computing methods. Other approaches include quantum and evolutionary computation, and swarm optimization. The book explains how to design computing devices in nonlinear media. This is achieved in three steps. First, cellular automaton models of reaction-diffusion and excitable computing are built. Second, natural analogies of simulated phenomena are sought. Third, working prototypes of laboratory processors are fabricated. Throughout the book it is assumed a computation is implemented using spreading waves and spatially interacting reagents. The book is full of examples of computation in cellular automata, swarms of mobile machines, thin-layer chemical liquids, insect societies, solitons, breathers and other wonders of Nature. In this book computer scientists and engineers will find blueprints inspired by Nature for the design of novel computing devices. Mathematicians will find exciting reasons to theorise. Physicists and chemists will be surprised and pleased to find that the systems they study can be used in completely new contexts. Biologists will discover that results of their field experiments also give solutions for celebrated mathematical problems. 25 cm. Robot brains : circuits and systems for conscious machines par Haikonen, Pentti O. Publication : [S.l.] Wiley-Interscience 2007 . 224 p. , Haikonen envisions autonomous robots that perceive and understand the world directly, acting in it in a natural human-like way without the need of programs and numerical representation of information. By developing higher-level cognitive functions through the power of artificial associative neuron architectures, the author approaches the issues of machine consciousness. Robot Brains expertly outlines a complete system approach to cognitive machines, offering practical design guidelines for the creation of non-numeric autonomous creative machines. It details topics such as component parts and realization principles, so that different pieces may be implemented in hardware or software. Real-world examples for designers and researchers are provided, including circuit and systems examples that few books on this topic give. In novel technical and practical detail, this book also considers: the limitations and remedies of traditional neural associators in creating true machine cognition; basic circuit assemblies cognitive neural architectures; how motors can be interfaced with the associative neural system in order for fluent motion to be achieved without numeric computations; memorization, imagination, planning and reasoning in the machine; the concept of machine emotions for motivation and value systems; an approach towards the use and understanding of natural language in robots. The methods presented in this book have important implications for computer vision, signal processing, speech recognition and other information technology fields. Systematic and thoroughly logical, it will appeal to practising engineers involved in the development and design of robots and cognitive machines, also researchers in Artificial Intelligence. Postgraduate students in computational neuroscience and robotics, and neuromorphic engineers will find it an exciting source of information. 25 cm. Swarm intelligence : introduction and applications.   Publication : [S.l.] : Springer, 2008 . 286 p. ; , The laws that govern the collective behavior of social insects, flocks of birds, or fish schools continue to mesmerize researchers. While individuals are rather unsophisticated, in cooperation they can solve complex tasks, a prime example being the ability of ant colonies to find shortest paths between their nests and food sources. Task-solving results from self-organization, which often evolves from simple means of communication, either directly or indirectly via changing the environment, the latter referred to as stigmergy. Scientists have applied these principles in new approaches, for example to optimization and the control of robots. Characteristics of the resulting systems include robustness and flexibility. This field of research is now referred to as swarm intelligence. The contributing authors are among the top researchers in their domain. The book is intended to provide an overview of swarm intelligence to novices, and to offer researchers in the field an update on interesting recent developments. Introductory chapters deal with the biological foundations, optimization, swarm robotics, and applications in new-generation telecommunication networks, while the second part contains chapters on more specific topics of swarm intelligence research such as the evolution of robot behavior, the use of particle swarms for dynamic optimization, and organic computing. 25 cm.
