Dynamical systems and numerical analysis par Stuart, Andrew. Publication : [S.l.] Cambridge University Press 1998 . 712 p. , This book unites the study of dynamical systems and numerical solution of differential equations. The first three chapters contain the elements of the theory of dynamical systems and the numerical solution of initial-value problems. In the remaining chapters, numerical methods are formulted as dynamical systems and the convergence and stability properties of the methods are examined. Topics studied include the stability of numerical methods for contractive, dissipative, gradient and Hamiltonian systems together with the convergence properties of equilibria, periodic solutions and strage attractors under numerical approximation. This book will be an invaluable tool for graduate students and researchers in the fields of numerical analysis and dynamical systems. 23 cm. Dynamics of viscous compressible fluids / par Feireisl,, Eduard. Publication : [S.l.] : Oxford University Press, USA, 2004 . 224 p. ; , The book develops the most recent ideas and concepts of the mathematical theory of viscous, compressible and heat conducting fluids. Two main goals are pursued: (I) global existence theory within the framework of variational (weak) solutions for the full system of the Navier-Stokes equations supplemented with large data; and (II) optimal existence results for the barotropic flows with respect to the available a priori estimates. The book is intended to be a compact and self-contained presentation of the most recent results of the mathematical theory of viscous compressible fluids. In order to place the text in better perspective, each chapter is concluded with a section devoted to historical notes including references to all-important and new results. The material is by no means intended to be the last word on the subject but rather to include possible directions of future research. It is aimed at research mathematicians, theoretical physicists, engineers and graduate students. 24 cm. Ecology and behaviour of mesozoic reptiles / par Cloudsley-Thompson, John L. Publication : [S.l.] : Springer, 2005 . 219 p. ; , Our knowledge of extinct animals depends almost entirely upon the study of fossils. This richly illustrated book clothes the skeletons of dinosaurs and other Mesozoic reptiles with flesh, and shows how these fascinating animals evolved and probably lived. Expert author John L. Cloudsley-Thompson provides an interesting synthesis of current views on their ecology, physiology and behaviour, and outlines the various hypotheses that have been proposed to explain their extinction. Numerous beautiful drawings of the animals and their environment illustrate this exciting monograph. 24 cm. Einstein and oppenheimer the meaning of genius par Schweber,, Silvan S. Publication : [S.l.] Harvard University Press 2010 . 432 p. , Albert Einstein and J. Robert Oppenheimer, two iconic scientists of the twentieth century, belonged to different generations, with the boundary marked by the advent of quantum mechanics. By exploring how these men differed—in their worldview, in their work, and in their day—this book provides powerful insights into the lives of two critical figures and into the scientific culture of their times. In Einstein’s and Oppenheimer’s philosophical and ethical positions, their views of nuclear weapons, their ethnic and cultural commitments, their opinions on the unification of physics, even the role of Buddhist detachment in their thinking, the book traces the broader issues that have shaped science and the world. Einstein is invariably seen as a lone and singular genius, while Oppenheimer is generally viewed in a particular scientific, political, and historical context. Silvan Schweber considers the circumstances behind this perception, in Einstein’s coherent and consistent self-image, and its relation to his singular vision of the world, and in Oppenheimer’s contrasting lack of certainty and related non-belief in a unitary, ultimate theory. Of greater importance, perhaps, is the role that timing and chance seem to have played in the two scientists’ contrasting characters and accomplishments—with Einstein’s having the advantage of maturing at a propitious time for theoretical physics, when the Newtonian framework was showing weaknesses. Bringing to light little-examined aspects of these lives, Schweber expands our understanding of two great figures of twentieth-century physics—but also our sense of what such greatness means, in personal, scientific, and cultural terms. 23 cm. Electromagnetic field computation by network methods par Felsen,, Leopold B. Publication : [S.l.] Springer 2009 . 228 p. , In this monograph, the authors propose a systematic and rigorous treatment of electromagnetic field representations in complex structures. The architecture suggested in this book accommodates use of different numerical methods as well as alternative Green's function representations in each of the subdomains resulting from a partitioning of the overall problem. The subdomains are regions of space where electromagnetic energy is stored and are described in terms of equivalent circuit representations based either on lumped element circuits or on transmission lines. Connection networks connect the subcircuits representing the subdomains. The connection networks are lossless, don't store energy and represent the overall problem topology. This is similar to what is done in circuit theory and permits a phrasing of the solution of EM field problems in complex structures by Network-oriented methods. 24 cm. Engineering turbulence modelling and experiments 6 : ercoftac international symposium on engineering turbulence and measurements - etmm6.   Publication : [S.l.] : Elsevier Science, 2005 . 1012 p. ; , Proceedings of the world renowned ERCOFTAC (International Symposium on Engineering Turbulence Modelling and Measurements). The proceedings include papers dealing with the following areas of turbulence: Âɛ Eddy-viscosity and second-order RANS models Âɛ Direct and large-eddy simulations and deductions for conventional modelling Âɛ Measurement and visualization techniques, experimental studies Âɛ Turbulence control Âɛ Transition and effects of curvature, rotation and buoyancy on turbulence Âɛ Aero-acoustics Âɛ Heat and mass transfer and chemically reacting flows Âɛ Compressible flows, shock phenomena Âɛ Two-phase flows Âɛ Applications in aerospace engineering, turbomachinery and reciprocating engines, industrial aerodynamics and wind engineering, and selected chemical engineering problems Turbulence remains one of the key issues in tackling engineering flow problems. These problems are solved more and more by CFD analysis, the reliability of which depends strongly on the performance of the turbulence models employed. Successful simulation of turbulence requires the understanding of the complex physical phenomena involved and suitable models for describing the turbulent momentum, heat and mass transfer. For the understanding of turbulence phenomena, experiments are indispensable, but they are equally important for providing data for the development and testing of turbulence models and hence for CFD software validation. As in other fields of Science, in the rapidly developing discipline of turbulence, swift progress can be achieved only by keeping up to date with recent advances all over the world and by exchanging ideas with colleagues active in related fields. 25 cm.
