Turbulence : an introduction for scientists and engineers / par Davidson,, P. A. Publication : [S.l.] : Oxford University Press, USA, 2004 . 678 p. ; , Based on a course by the author at the University of Cambridge, this comprehensive text on turbulence and fluid dynamics is aimed at year 4 undergraduates and graduates in applied mathematics, physics and engineering and provides an ideal reference for industry professionals and researchers. It bridges the gap between elementary accounts of turbulence found in undergraduate texts and more rigorous accounts given in monographs on the subject. Containing exercises and many examples, the author combines the maximum of physical insight with the minimum of mathematical detail where possible. The text is highly illustrated throughout, and includes color plates; all required mathematical techniques are covered in extensive appendices. The text is divided into three parts: Part I consists of a traditional introduction to the classical aspects of turbulence, the nature of turbulence, and the equations of fluid mechanics. Mathematics is kept to a minimum, presupposing only an elementary knowledge of fluid mechanics and statistics. Part II tackles the problem of homogeneous turbulence with a focus on numerical methods. Part III covers certain special topics rarely discussed in introductory texts. Many geophysical and astrophysical flows are dominated by the effects of body forces, such as buoyancy, Coriolis and Lorentz forces. Moreover, certain large-scale flows are approximately two-dimensional and this has led to a concerted investigation of two-dimensional turbulence over the last few years. Both the influence of body forces and two-dimensional turbulence are discussed. 25 cm. Date : 2004 Disponibilité : Exemplaires disponibles: La bibliothèque des Sciences Exactes et Naturelles (1),

Turbulence, coherent structures, dynamical systems and symmetry   Publication : Cambridge, UK | New York Cambridge University Press 2012 . xvi, 386 pages , "Turbulence pervades our world, from weather patterns to the air entering our lungs. This book describes methods that reveal its structures and dynamics. Building on the existence of coherent structures - recurrent patterns - in turbulent flows, it describes mathematical methods that reduce the governing (Navier-Stokes) equations to simpler forms that can be understood more easily. This second edition contains a new chapter on the balanced proper orthogonal decomposition: a method derived from control theory that is especially useful for flows equipped with sensors and actuators. It also reviews relevant work carried out since 1995. The book is ideal for engineering, physical science and mathematics researchers working in fluid dynamics and other areas in which coherent patterns emerge"-- | "This book describes methods that reveal its structures and dynamics. Tutorials in mathematical biosciences I : mathematical neuroscience / par Borisyuk, Alla. Publication : [S.l.] : Springer, 2005 . 170 p. ; , This volume introduces some basic theories on computational neuroscience. Chapter 1 is a brief introduction to neurons, tailored to the subsequent chapters. Chapter 2 is a self-contained introduction to dynamical systems and the bifurcation theory, oriented toward neuronal dynamics. The theory is illustrated with a model of Parkinson's disease. Chapter 3 reviews the theory of coupled neural oscillators observed ghroughout the nervous systems at all levels; it describes how oscillations arise, what pattern they take, and how they depend on excitory of inhibitory synaptic connections. Chapter 4 specializes to one particular neuronal system, namely, the auditory system. It includes a self-contained introduction, from the anatomy and physiology of the inner ear to the neuronal network which connects the hair cells to the cortex, and describes various models of subsystems. 24 cm. Verification and validation in scientific computing par Oberkampf, William L. Publication : New York Cambridge University Press 2010 . xiv, 767 pages , "Advances in scientific computing have made modelling and simulation an important part of the decision-making process in engineering, science, and public policy. This book provides a comprehensive and systematic development of the basic concepts, principles, and procedures for verification and validation of models and simulations. The emphasis is placed on models that are described by partial differential and integral equations and the simulations that result from their numerical solution. The methods described can be applied to a wide range of technical fields, from the physical sciences, engineering and technology and industry, through to environmental regulations and safety, product and plant safety, financial investing, and governmental regulations. This book will be genuinely welcomed by researchers, practitioners, and decision makers in a broad range of fields, who seek to improve the credibility and reliability of simulation results. It will also be appropriate either for university courses or for independent study"-- 26 cm. Wave propagation and time reversal in randomly layered media / par Fouque, Jean-Pierre. Publication : [S.l.] : Springer, 2007 . 612 p. ; , Wave propagation in random media is an interdisciplinary field that has emerged from the need in physics and engineering to model and analyze wave energy transport in complex environments. This book gives a systematic and self-contained presentation of wave propagation in randomly layered media using the asymptotic theory of ordinary differential equations with random coefficients. The first half of the book gives a detailed treatment of wave reflection and transmission in one-dimensional random media, after introducing gradually the tools from partial differential equations and probability theory that are needed for the analysis. The second half of the book presents wave propagation in three-dimensional randomly layered media along with several applications, primarily involving time reversal. Many new results are presented here for the first time. 24 cm. Date : 2007 Disponibilité : Exemplaires disponibles: La bibliothèque des Sciences Exactes et Naturelles (1),

What makes nature tick? / par Newton, Roger G Publication : [S.l.] : Harvard University Press, 1998 . 257 pages; , For many of us, the physical sciences are as obscure as the phenomena they explain. We see the wonders of nature but miss the symmetry beneath, framed as it is in ever stranger symbols and concepts. Roger Newton's accessible account of how physicists understand the world allows the expert and novice alike to explore both the mysteries of the universe and the beauty of the science that gives shape to the unseeable. In What Makes Nature Tick? we find engaging discussions of solitons and superconductors, quarks and strings, phase space, tachyons, time, chaos, and indeterminacy, as well as the investigations that have led to their elucidation. But Roger Newton does not limit this volume to late-breaking discoveries and startling facts. He presents physics as an expanding intellectual structure, a network of very human ideas that stretches back three hundred years from our present frontier of knowledge. Where does our unidirectional sense of time come from? What makes a particle elementary? How can forces be transmitted through empty space? In addition to providing these answers, and a host of others at the very heart of physics, Newton shows us how physicists formulate the questions--a process in which intuition, imagination, and aesthetics have a powerful influence. 24 cm.
