A Geospatial framework for the coastal zone : national needs for coastal mapping and charting / par Charting,, Committee on National Needs for Coastal Mapping and. Publication : [S.l.] : National Academies Press, 2004 . 168 p. ; , The coastal zone is of enormous importance to the well-being of the nation, as our lives and economy are inextricably linked to the features and activities that occur within this dynamic region. In order to understand and address the effects of natural and anthropogenic forces in the coastal zone, a holistic multidisciplinary framework is required to account for the interconnectivity of processes within the system. The foundation of this framework is accurate geospatial information - information that is depicted on maps and charts. "A Geospatial Framework for the Coastal Zone: National Needs" identifies and suggests mechanisms for addressing national needs for spatial information in the coastal zone. It identifies high priority needs, evaluates the potential for meeting those needs based on the current level of effort, and suggests steps to increase collaboration and ensure that the nation's need for spatial information in the coastal zone is met in an efficient and timely manner. 23 cm. Review questions and answers for veterinary technicians par Colville, Thomas Publication : [S.l.] Mosby 2003 . 352 p. , An excellent study guide for veterinary technician students, this book is an ideal review for final examinations, state certification examinations, and the Veterinary Technician National Examination. The sections in the text mirror the sections on the national exam, with over 2,800 multiple-choice questions - written by expert veterinary technician educators - that contain the most current information available on various subject areas. A companion CD-ROM features 2,400 additional questions in tutorial mode, categorized by subject matter, with immediate feedback and rationales for correct answers. Test mode on the CD-ROM allows the user to take three randomized 200-question tests a maximum of three times each, which provides feedback on scores in each of the subject areas and points out areas requiring further study. Questions are written at appropriate level for veterinary technician students and practicing veterinary technicians, making this book a practical source for review. More than 5,000 questions in all provide a valuable review experience on various subject areas within the scope of the veterinary technician's duties. Questions are designed to test factual knowledge, reasoning skills, and clinical judgment. Answers with rationales for correct answers are provided in an answer key at the back of the book, along with sample answer sheets for practice. All questions are multiple-choice, the format most commonly used in certification exams. All 2,800 questions in the book are completely new to this edition. A new CD-ROM contains 2,400 additional questions, providing twice as many questions for study as the last edition, as well as the option of taking actual practice tests. 28 cm. Science and technology for army homeland security : report 1 / par Defense,, Committee on Army Science and Technology for Homeland. Publication : [S.l.] : National Academies Press, 2003 . 184 p. ; , The confluence of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attack and the U.S. Army's historic role to support civil authorities has resulted in substantial new challenges for the Army. To help meet these challenges, the Assistant Secretary of the Army for Research and Technology requested the National Research Council (NRC) carry out a series of studies on how science and technology could assist the Army prepare for its role in homeland security (HLS). The NRC's Board on Army Science and Technology formed the Committee on Army Science and Technology for Homeland Security to accomplish that assignment. The Committee was asked to review relevant literature and activities, determine areas of emphasis for Army S&T in support of counter terrorism and anti-terrorism, and recommend high-payoff technologies to help the Army fulfill its mission. The Department of Defense Counter-Terrorism Technology Task Force identified four operational areas in reviewing technical proposals for HLS operations: indications and warning; denial and survivability; recovery and consequence management; and attribution and retaliation. The study sponsor asked the Committee to use these four areas as the basis for its assessment of the science and technology (S&T) that will be important for the Army's HLS role. Overall, the Committee found that there is potential for substantial synergy between S&T work carried out by the Army for its HLS responsibilities and the development of the next generation Army, the Objective Force; and the Army National Guard (ARNG) is critical to the success of the Army's HLS efforts. 23 cm. Statistical methods in counterterrorism : game theory, modeling, syndromic surveillance, and biometric authentication.   Publication : [S.l.] : Springer, 2006 . 292 p. ; , All the data was out there to warn us of this impending attack, why didn't we see it?" This was a frequently asked question in the weeks and months after the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon on September 11, 2001. In the wake of the attacks, statisticians moved quickly to become part of the national response to the global war on terror. This book is an overview of the emerging research program at the intersection of national security and statistical sciences. A wide range of talented researchers address issues in - Syndromic Surveillance---How do we detect and recognize bioterrorist events? - Modeling and Simulation---How do we better understand and explain complex processes so that decision makers can take the best course of action? - Biometric Authentication---How do we pick the terrorist out of the crowd of faces or better match the passport to the traveler? - Game Theory---How do we understand the rules that terrorists are playing by? This book includes technical treatments of statistical issues that will be of use to quantitative researchers as well as more general examinations of quantitative approaches to counterterrorism that will be accessible to decision makers with stronger policy backgrounds. Dr. Alyson G. Wilson is a statistician and the technical lead for DoD programs in the Statistical Sciences Group at Los Alamos National Laboratory. Dr. Gregory D. Wilson is a rhetorician and ethnographer in the Statistical Sciences Group at Los Alamos National Laboratory. Dr. David H. Olwell is chair of the Department of Systems Engineering at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California. 24 cm. Technology development for army unmanned ground vehicles / par Technology,, Committee on Army Unmanned Ground Vehicle. Publication : [S.l.] : National Academies Press, 2002 . 180 p. ; , Unmanned ground vehicles (UGV) are expected to play a key role in the Army's Objective Force structure. These UGVs would be used for weapons platforms, logistics carriers, and reconnaissance, surveillance, and target acquisition among other things. To examine aspects of the Army's UGV program, assess technology readiness, and identify key issues in implementing UGV systems, among other questions, the Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Army for Research and Technology asked the National Research Council (NRC) to conduct a study of UGV technologies. This report discusses UGV operational requirements, current development efforts, and technology integration and roadmaps to the future. Key recommendations are presented addressing technical content, time lines, and milestones for the UGV efforts. 28 cm.
