Introduction to thermoelectricity par Goldsmid,, H. Julian. Publication : [S.l.] Springer 2009 . 242 p. , Introduction to Thermoelectricity is the latest work by Professor Julian Goldsmid drawing on his 55 years experience in the field. The theory of the thermoelectric and related phenomena is presented in sufficient detail to enable researchers to understand their observations and develop improved thermoelectric materials. The methods for the selection of materials and their improvement are discussed. Thermoelectric materials for use in refrigeration and electrical generation are reviewed. Experimental techniques for the measurement of properties and for the production of thermoelements are described. Special emphasis is placed on nanotechnology which promises to yield great improvements in the efficiency of thermoelectric devices. Chapters are also devoted to transverse thermoelectric effects and thermionic energy conversion, both techniques offering the promise of important applications in the future. 25 cm. Macroscopic and statistical thermodynamics : expanded english edition / par Cheng,, Yi-chen. Publication : [S.l.] : Wspc, 2006 . 456 p. ; , This textbook addresses the key questions in both classical thermodynamics and statistical thermodynamics: Why are the thermodynamic properties of a nano-sized system different from those of a macroscopic system of the same substance? Why and how is entropy defined in thermodynamics, and how is the entropy change calculated when dissipative heat is involved? What is an ensemble and why is its theory so successful? Translated from a highly successful Chinese book, this expanded English edition contains many updated sections and several new ones. They include the introduction of the grand canonical ensemble, the grand partition function and its application to ideal quantum gases, a discussion of the mean field theory of the Ising model and the phenomenon of ferromagnetism, as well as a more detailed discussion of ideal quantum gases near T = 0, for both Fermi and Bose gases. 23 cm. Molecular energetics condensed-phase thermochemical techniques par Simões,, José A. Marti Publication : [S.l.] Oxford University Press, USA, 2008 . 304 p. , This book offers a broad discussion of the concepts required to understand the thermodynamic stability of molecules and bonds and a description of the most important condensed-phase techniques that have been used to obtain that information. Above all, this book attempts to provide useful guidelines on how to choose the "best" data and how to use it to understand chemistry. Although the book assumes some basic knowledge on physical-chemistry, it has been written in a "textbook" style and most topics are addressed in a way that is accessible to advanced undergraduate students. Many examples are given throughout the text, involving a variety of molecules. This text will provide a good starting point for those who wish to initiate in the field or simply to understand how to assess, to estimate, and to use thermochemical data. It will therefore appeal to a broad range of practicing chemists and particularly to those interested in energetics-structure-reactivity relationships. 24 cm. Plasma physics and controlled nuclear fusion par Miyamoto, Kenro. Publication : [S.l.] Springer 2010 . 372 p. , The primary objectives of this book are, firstly, to present the essential theoretical background needed to understand recent fusion research and, secondly, to describe the current status of fusion research for graduate students and senior undergraduates. It will also serve as a useful reference for scientists and engineers working in the related fields. In Part I, Plasma Physics, the author explains the basics of magneto-hydrodynamics and kinetic theory in a simple and compact way and, at the same time, covers important new topics for fusion studies such as the ballooning representation, instabilities driven by energetic particles, and various plasma models for computer simulations. Part II, Controlled Nuclear Fusion, attempts to review the "big picture" in fusion research. Mathematical derivations are comprehensively explained to better enable readers to later concentrate on the physics. All important phenomena and technologies are addressed, with a particular emphasis on the topics of most concern in current research. 24 cm. Predictive statistical mechanics a nonequilibrium ensemble formalism par Luzzi, Roberto. Publication : Dordrecht Springer 2002 . XL-301 p. , Chapters 1 to 5 include a description of the philosophy, foundations, and construction (methodology) of the formalism, including the derivation of a nonequilibrium grand-canonical ensemble for far-from-equilibrium systems as well as the derivation of a quantum nonlinear kinetic theory and a response function theory together with a theory of scattering. In chapter 6 applications of the theory are cataloged, making comparisons with experimental data (a basic step for the validation of any theory). Chapter 7 is devoted to the description of irreversible thermodynamics, providing a far-reaching generalization of Informational-Statistical Thermodynamics. The last chapter gives an overall picture of the formalism, and questions and criticisms related to it are discussed. 25 cm. Sediment transport : a geophysical phenomenon par Gyr, Albert. Publication : [S.l.] Springer 2006 . 283 p. , This textbook discusses the fundamental principles of sediment transport in the geophysical context of rivers and is intended as both a course textbook and as a guide for the practical engineer. We begin by describing phenomena such as bed load and suspension transport from a classical perspective by applying the mean wall shear stress approach while additionally incorporating a statistical description of the inherent wall shear stress fluctuations. Concepts from turbulent flow regime are introduced to address the limitations of the classical approach to various aspects of sediment transport, such as for example, the Newtonian description of dense suspensions, or the description of the self-organization processes for developing bed forms, or the prediction of transport in very rough bed conditions. In this context coherent structures and flow separation mechanisms are developed as important new elements, which allow using topological rules for the formulation of transport especially for developing bed forms. Since the most up-to-date research findings in the field are presented, this book serves as both a support in the formulation of academic research programs, and as a practical text for engineers seeking to simulate complex problems or special aspects of sediment transport. This book will therefore be of interest and of use to both students and to the professional scientist. 25 cm. Statistical physics of liquids at freezing and beyond par Das, Shankar P. Publication : Cambridge | New York Cambridge University Press 2011 . xvii, 566 pages , "Exploring important theories for understanding freezing and the liquid-glass transition, this book is useful for graduate students and researchers in soft-condensed matter physics, chemical physics and materials science. It details recent ideas and key developments, providing an up-to-date view of current understanding. The standard tools of statistical physics for the dense liquid state are covered. The freezing transition is described from the classical density functional approach. Classical nucleation theory as well as applications of density functional methods for nucleation of crystals from the melt are discussed, and compared to results from computer simulation of simple systems. Discussions of supercooled liquids form a major part of the book. Theories of slow dynamics and the dynamical heterogeneities of the glassy state are presented, as well as nonequilibrium dynamics and thermodynamic phase transitions at deep supercooling. Mathematical treatments are given in full detail so readers can learn the basic techniques"-- 26 cm.
