A geometric approach to thermomechanics of dissipating continua par Rakotomanana, Lalao. Publication : [S.l.] Birkhuser, . 280 p. , This monograph focuses on the modeling of continua that exhibit the property of singularities in fields. A rational theory of continuum thermomechanics that takes into account the existence and distribution of scalar and vector discontinuities is presented. Guiding the work is the notion that discontinuities should be modeled by the torsion and curvature tensors (Cartan), thus forming an attractive alternative way of representing dissipating continua with singularities. Also emphasized in this study is the relationship between singularities and certain irreversible properties that occur in solid and fluid models. The required mathematical background is given in several appendices, although some basic understanding of differential geometry and tensor analysis would be helpful. The book is largely self-contained and should serve a readership of graduate students, researchers, and engineers in applied mathematics, mechanics, and physics. 23 cm. Analytical methods for problems of molecular transport / par Ivchenko, I.N. Publication : [S.l.] : Springer, 2007 . 409 p. ; , The Kinetic Theory of Gases has applications in many areas of science and technology as well as in our understandings of many natural processes and phenomena from the nano-scale up to the cosmic-scale. Some of the fields and topics affected include manufacturing, health care, weather, defence, pollution, aerospace science and engineering, and others. In particular, the interactions of rarefied gases with surfaces are of great interest because such interactions can have pronounced effects on the behaviour exhibited by those systems in all of the above fields. Such fundamental things as the transfer of mass, momentum, and energy between the components of a system can be significantly altered by such interactions. Collectively this transfer is typically described in terms of Rarefied Gas Dynamics and Transport Theory which generally go hand-in-hand with the Kinetic Theory of Gases. When this transport involves small particles suspended in a gas such as air, it is typically termed Aerosol Mechanics. Thus, this book should prove to be a very useful tool in virtually all application areas involving the Kinetic Theory of Gases, Rarefied Gas Dynamics, Transport Theory, and Aerosol Mechanics. This book is designed to serve a dual function. It is intended that it be capable of serving as a teaching instrument, either in a classroom environment or independently, for the study of basic analytical methods and mathematical techniques that may be used in the Kinetic Theory of Gases and is primarily suitable for use in graduate level physics and engineering courses on the subject. This book should also prove to be useful as a reference for scientists and engineers working in the fields of Rarefied Gas Dynamics and Aerosol Mechanics. In addition, the material in this book may prove to be of interest to individuals working in such areas as Physical Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or any other applied discipline in which gas-surface interactions can be expected to play a significant role. 24 cm. Concepts in thermal physics par Blundell,, Stephen J. Publication : [S.l.] Oxford University Press, USA 2009 . 516 p. , An understanding of thermal physics is crucial to much of modern physics, chemistry and engineering. This book provides a modern introduction to the main principles that are foundational to thermal physics, thermodynamics and statistical mechanics. The key concepts are carefully presented in a clear way, and new ideas are illustrated with copious worked examples as well as a description of the historical background to their discovery. Applications are presented to subjects as diverse as stellar astrophysics, information and communication theory, condensed matter physics and climate change. Each chapter concludes with detailed exercises. The second edition of this popular textbook maintains the structure and lively style of the first edition but extends its coverage of thermodynamics and statistical mechanics to include several new topics, including osmosis, diffusion problems, Bayes theorem, radiative transfer, the Ising model and Monte Carlo methods. New examples and exercises have been added throughout. 25 cm. Date : 2009 Disponibilité : Exemplaires disponibles: La bibliothèque des Sciences Exactes et Naturelles (1),

Continuum mechanics and thermodynamics from fundamental concepts to governing equations par Tadmor, Ellad B., Publication : Cambridge, UK | New York Cambridge University Press 2012 . xxii, 350 pages , "Continuum mechanics and thermodynamics are foundational theories of many fields of science and engineering. This book presents a fresh perspective on these fundamental topics, connecting micro- and nanoscopic theories and emphasizing topics relevant to understanding solid-state thermo-mechanical behavior. Providing clear, in-depth coverage, the book gives a self-contained treatment of topics directly related to nonlinear materials modeling. It starts with vectors and tensors, finite deformation kinematics, the fundamental balance and conservation laws, and classical thermodynamics. It then discusses the principles of constitutive theory and examples of constitutive models, presents a foundational treatment of energy principles and stability theory, and concludes with example closed-form solutions and the essentials of finite elements. Together with its companion book, Modeling Materials, (Cambridge University Press, 2011), this work presents the fundamentals of multiscale materials modeling for graduate students and researchers in physics, materials science, chemistry and engineering"-- 26 cm. Macroscopic and statistical thermodynamics : expanded english edition / par Cheng,, Yi-chen. Publication : [S.l.] : Wspc, 2006 . 456 p. ; , This textbook addresses the key questions in both classical thermodynamics and statistical thermodynamics: Why are the thermodynamic properties of a nano-sized system different from those of a macroscopic system of the same substance? Why and how is entropy defined in thermodynamics, and how is the entropy change calculated when dissipative heat is involved? What is an ensemble and why is its theory so successful? Translated from a highly successful Chinese book, this expanded English edition contains many updated sections and several new ones. They include the introduction of the grand canonical ensemble, the grand partition function and its application to ideal quantum gases, a discussion of the mean field theory of the Ising model and the phenomenon of ferromagnetism, as well as a more detailed discussion of ideal quantum gases near T = 0, for both Fermi and Bose gases. 23 cm. Molecular energetics condensed-phase thermochemical techniques par Simões,, José A. Marti Publication : [S.l.] Oxford University Press, USA, 2008 . 304 p. , This book offers a broad discussion of the concepts required to understand the thermodynamic stability of molecules and bonds and a description of the most important condensed-phase techniques that have been used to obtain that information. Above all, this book attempts to provide useful guidelines on how to choose the "best" data and how to use it to understand chemistry. Although the book assumes some basic knowledge on physical-chemistry, it has been written in a "textbook" style and most topics are addressed in a way that is accessible to advanced undergraduate students. Many examples are given throughout the text, involving a variety of molecules. This text will provide a good starting point for those who wish to initiate in the field or simply to understand how to assess, to estimate, and to use thermochemical data. It will therefore appeal to a broad range of practicing chemists and particularly to those interested in energetics-structure-reactivity relationships. 24 cm. Predictive statistical mechanics a nonequilibrium ensemble formalism par Luzzi, Roberto. Publication : Dordrecht Springer 2002 . XL-301 p. , Chapters 1 to 5 include a description of the philosophy, foundations, and construction (methodology) of the formalism, including the derivation of a nonequilibrium grand-canonical ensemble for far-from-equilibrium systems as well as the derivation of a quantum nonlinear kinetic theory and a response function theory together with a theory of scattering.
