American Mathematical Society 2007 . 249 p. , This book introduces a new point-set level approach to stable homotopy theory that has already had many applications and promises to have a lasting impact on the subject. Given the sphere spectrum $S$, the authors construct an associative, commutative, and unital smash product in a complete and cocomplete category of "$S$-modules" whose derived category is equivalent to the classical stable homotopy category. This construction allows for a simple and algebraically manageable definition of "$S$-algebras" and "commutative $S$-algebras" in terms of associative, or associative and commutative, products $Rwedge _SR longrightarrow R$. These notions are essentially equivalent to the earlier notions of $A_{infty }$ and $E_{infty }$ ring spectra, and the older notions feed naturally into the new framework to provide plentiful examples. There is an equally simple definition of $R$-modules in terms of maps $Rwedge _SMlongrightarrow M$. When $R$ is commutative, the category of $R$-modules also has an associative, commutative, and unital smash product, and its derived category has properties just like the stable homotopy category. Spectral problems associated with corner singularities of solutions to elliptic equations par Kozlov,, V. A. The authors treat both classical problems of mathematical physics and general elliptic boundary value problems. The volume is divided into two parts: The first is devoted to the power-logarithmic singularities of solutions to classical boundary value problems of mathematical physics. The second deals with similar singularities for higher order elliptic equations and systems. Chapter 1 collects basic facts concerning operator pencils acting in a pair of Hilbert spaces. Related properties of ordinary differential equations with constant operator coefficients are discussed and connections with the theory of general elliptic boundary value problems in domains with conic vertices are outlined. New results are presented. Chapter 2 treats the Laplace operator as a starting point and a model for the subsequent study of angular and conic singularities of solutions. Chapter 3 considers the Dirichlet boundary condition beginning with the plane case and turning to the space problems. Chapter 4 investigates some mixed boundary conditions. The Stokes system is discussed in Chapters 5 and 6, and Chapter 7 concludes with the Dirichlet problem for the polyharmonic operator. Chapter 8 studies the Dirichlet problem for general elliptic differential equations of order $2m$ in an angle. In Chapter 9, an asymptotic formula for the distribution of eigenvalues of operator pencils corresponding to general elliptic boundary value problems in an angle is obtained. Chapters 10 and 11 discuss the Dirichlet problem for elliptic systems of differential equations of order $2$ in an $n$-dimensional cone. Chapter 12 studies the Neumann problem for general elliptic systems, in particular with eigenvalues of the corresponding operator pencil in the strip $mid {Re} lambda - m + /2n mid leq 1/2$. It is shown that only integer numbers contained in this strip are eigenvalues. Applications are placed within chapter introductions and as special sections at the end of chapters. Beyond a general background in graduate-level algebra, some chapters assume an acquaintance with some algebraic number theory. The backward shift on the hardy space par Cima, Joseph A. Publication : [S.l.] American Mathematical Society 2000 . 199 p. , Shift operators on Hilbert spaces of analytic functions play an important role in the study of bounded linear operators on Hilbert spaces since they often serve as models for various classes of linear operators. For example, ``parts'' of direct sums of the backward shift operator on the classical Hardy space $H^2$ model certain types of contraction operators and potentially have connections to understanding the invariant subspaces of a general linear operator. This book is a thorough treatment of the characterization of the backward shift invariant subspaces of the well-known Hardy spaces $H^{p}$. The characterization of the backward shift invariant subspaces of $H^{p}$ for $1 < p < infty$ was done in a 1970 paper of R. Douglas, H. S. Shapiro, and A. Shields, and the case $0 < p le 1$ was done in a 1979 paper of A. B. Aleksandrov which is not well known in the West. This material is pulled together in this single volume and includes all the necessary background material needed to understand (especially for the $0 < p < 1$ case) the proofs of these results. Several proofs of the Douglas-Shapiro-Shields result are provided so readers can get acquainted with different operator theory and theory techniques: applications of these proofs are also provided for understanding the backward shift operator on various other spaces of analytic functions. The results are thoroughly examined. Other features of the volume include a description of applications to the spectral properties of the backward shift operator and a treatment of some general real-variable techniques that are not taught in standard graduate seminars. The book includes references to works by Duren, Garnett, and Stein for proofs and a bibliography for further exploration in the areas of operator theory and functional analysis. 26 cm. The ricci flow an introduction par Chow, Bennett. Intuitively, the idea is to set up a PDE that evolves a metric according to its Ricci curvature. The resulting equation has much in common with the heat equation, which tends to "flow" a given function to ever nicer functions. By analogy, the Ricci flow evolves an initial metric into improved metrics. Richard Hamilton began the systematic use of the Ricci flow in the early 1980s and applied it in particular to study 3-manifolds. Grisha Perelman has made recent breakthroughs aimed at completing Hamilton's program. The Ricci flow method is now central to our understanding of the geometry and topology of manifolds. Vertex algebras and algebraic curves par Frenkel, Edward.
