Absorbable and biodegradable polymers par Shalaby, Shalaby W. Publication : [S.l.] CRC Press 2004 . 289 p. , Interest in biodegradable and absorbable polymers is growing rapidly in large part because of their biomedical implant and drug delivery applications. This text illustrates creative approaches to custom designing unique, fiber-forming materials for equally unique applications. It includes an example of the development and application of a new absorbable system, a condensed encyclopedia on novel PEG-based copolyesters, and the first comprehensive discussion of a novel class of absorbable tissue adhesives. The book also provides up-to-date information on important tissue engineering technologies and approaches to utilizing these technologies for long awaited practical applications. 25 cm. Adsorption and diffusion in nanoporous materials par Roque-Malherbe,, Rolando M.A. Publication : [S.l.] CRC Press 2007 . 288 p. , As nanomaterials get smaller, their properties increasingly diverge from their bulk material counterparts. Written from a materials science perspective, Adsorption and Diffusion in Nanoporous Materials describes the methodology for using single-component gas adsorption and diffusion measurements to characterize nanoporous solids. Concise, yet comprehensive, the book covers both equilibrium adsorption and adsorption kinetics in dynamic systems in a single source. It presents the theoretical and mathematical tools for analyzing microporosity, kinetics, thermodynamics, and transport processes of the adsorbent surface. Then it examines how these measurements elucidate structural and morphological characteristics of the materials. Detailed descriptions of the phenomena include diagrams, essential equations, and fully derived, concrete examples based on the author's own research experiences and insight. The book contains chapters on statistical physics, dynamic adsorption in plug flow bed reactors, and the synthesis and modification of important nanoporous materials. The final chapter covers the principles and applications of adsorption for multicomponent systems in the liquid phase. Connecting recent advances in adsorption characterization with developments in the transport and diffusion of nanoporous materials, this book is ideal for scientists involved in the research, development, and applications of new nanoporous materials. 24 cm. Microbial biosorption of metals   Publication : [S.l.] Springer 2011 . 329 p. , Heavy metals always pose serious ecological risks when released into the environment due to their elemental non-degradable nature, regardless of their chemical form. This calls for the development of efficient and low-cost effluent treatment and metal recuperation technologies for contaminated waste water, not only because regulatory limits need to be met but also because the waste itself can be a resource for certain precious metals.   Biosorption is a general property of living and dead biomass to rapidly bind and abiotically concentrate inorganic or organic compounds from even very diluted aqueous solutions. As a specific term, biosorption is a method that utilizes materials of biological origin – biosorbents formulated from non-living biomass - for the removal of target substances from aqueous solutions. Recent research on biosorption provides a solid understanding of the mechanism underlying microbial biosorption of heavy metals and related elements.   This book gathers review articles analyzing current views on the mechanism and (bio)chemistry of biosorption,  the performance of bacterial, fungal and algal biomass, and the practical aspects of biosorbent preparation and engineering.  It also reviews the physico-chemical evaluations of biosorbents and modelling of the process as well as the importance of biosorption during heavy metal removal using living cells. It is a reference work for scientists, environmental safety engineers and R&D specialists who wish to further promote biosorption research and use the accumulated knowledge to develop and build industrial applications of biosorption in heavy metal separation technologies.   24 cm.
