Applications of Markov chains in chemical engineering / par Tamir,, Abraham. Publication : . 1 online resource (xi, 604 pages) : , Markov chains make it possible to predict the future state of a system from its present state ignoring its past history. Surprisingly, despite the widespread use of Markov chains in many areas of science and technology, their applications in chemical engineering have been relatively meager. A possible reason for this phenomenon might be that books containing material on this subject have been written in such a way that the simplicity of Markov chains has been shadowed by the tedious mathematical derivations. Thus, the major objective of writing this book has been to try to change this situation. There are many advantages, detailed in Chapter 1, of using the discrete Markov-chain model in chemical engineering. Probably, the most important advantage is that physical models can be presented in a unified description via state vector and a one-step transition probability matrix. Consequently, a process is demonstrated solely by the probability of a system to occupy or not occupy a state. The book has been written in an easy and understandable form, where complex mathematical derivations are abandoned. The fundamentals of Markov chains are presented in Chapter 2 with examples from the bible, art and real life problems. An extremely wide collection is given of examples viz., reactions, reactors, reactions and reactors as well as combined processes, including their solution and a graphical presentation of it, all of which demonstrates the usefulness of applying Markov chains in chemical engineering. Bayesian models for categorical data par Congdon, Professor Peter. Publication : Chichester ; New York Wiley 2005 . 446 p. , The use of Bayesian methods for the analysis of data has grown substantially in areas as diverse as applied statistics, psychology, economics and medical science. Bayesian Methods for Categorical Data sets out to demystify modern Bayesian methods, making them accessible to students and researchers alike. Emphasizing the use of statistical computing and applied data analysis, this book provides a comprehensive introduction to Bayesian methods of categorical outcomes. * Reviews recent Bayesian methodology for categorical outcomes (binary, count and multinomial data). * Considers missing data models techniques and non-standard models (ZIP and negative binomial). * Evaluates time series and spatio-temporal models for discrete data. * Features discussion of univariate and multivariate techniques. * Provides a set of downloadable worked examples with documented WinBUGS code, available from an ftp site. The author's previous 2 bestselling titles provided a comprehensive introduction to the theory and application of Bayesian models. Bayesian Models for Categorical Data continues to build upon this foundation by developing their application to categorical, or discrete data - one of the most common types of data available. The author's clear and logical approach makes the book accessible to a wide range of students and practitioners, including those dealing with categorical data in medicine, sociology, psychology and epidemiology. 25 cm. Markov models for pattern recognition : from theory to applications par Fink, Gernot A. Publication : [S.l.] Springer 2010 . 248 p. , This comprehensive introduction to the Markov modeling framework describes the underlying theoretical concepts of Markov models as used for sequential data, covering Hidden Markov models and Markov chain models. It also presents the techniques necessary to build successful systems for practical applications. In addition, the book demonstrates the actual use of the technology in the three main application areas of pattern recognition methods based on Markov-Models: speech recognition, handwriting recognition, and biological sequence analysis. The book is suitable for experts as well as for practitioners. 23 cm. Date : 2010 Disponibilité : Exemplaires disponibles: La bibliothèque des sciences de l'ingénieur (1),

Markov processes for stochastic modeling par Ibe,, Oliver. Publication : [S.l.] Academic Press 2008 . 512 p. , Markov processes are used to model systems with limited memory. They are used in many areas including communications systems, transportation networks, image segmentation and analysis, biological systems and DNA sequence analysis, random atomic motion and diffusion in physics, social mobility, population studies, epidemiology, animal and insect migration, queueing systems, resource management, dams, financial engineering, actuarial science, and decision systems. This book, which is written for upper level undergraduate and graduate students, and researchers, presents a unified presentation of Markov processes. In addition to traditional topics such as Markovian queueing system, the book discusses such topics as continuous-time random walk, correlated random walk, Brownian motion, diffusion processes, hidden Markov models, Markov random fields, Markov point processes and Markov chain Monte Carlo. Continuous-time random walk is currently used in econophysics to model the financial market, which has traditionally been modelled as a Brownian motion. Correlated random walk is popularly used in ecological studies to model animal and insect movement. Hidden Markov models are used in speech analysis and DNA sequence analysis while Markov random fields and Markov point processes are used in image analysis. Thus, the book is designed to have a very broad appeal. - Provides the practical, current applications of Markov processes - Coverage of HMM, Point processes, and Monte Carlo - Includes enough theory to help students gain throrough understanding of the subject - Principles can be immediately applied in many specific research projects, saving researchers time - End of chapter exercises provide reinforcement, practice and increased understanding to the student. 23 cm. Stochastic relations foundations for markov transition systems par Doberkat,, Ernst-Erich. Publication : [S.l.] Chapman and Hall/CRC 2007 . 376 p. , Collecting information previously scattered throughout the vast literature, including the author’s own research, Stochastic Relations: Foundations for Markov Transition Systems develops the theory of stochastic relations as a basis for Markov transition systems. After an introduction to the basic mathematical tools from topology, measure theory, and categories, the book examines the central topics of congruences and morphisms, applies these to the monoidal structure, and defines bisimilarity and behavioral equivalence within this framework. The author views developments from the general theory of coalgebras in the context of the subprobability functor. These tools show that bisimilarity and behavioral and logical equivalence are the same for general modal logics and for continuous time stochastic logic with and without a fixed point operator. With numerous problems and several case studies, this book is an invaluable study of an important aspect of computer science theory. 24 cm.
