Brain dynamics : an introduction to models and simulations par Haken, Hermann. Publication : [S.l.] Springer 2008 . 347 p. , This is an excellent introduction for graduate students and nonspecialists to the field of mathematical and computational neurosciences. The book approaches the subject via pulsed-coupled neural networks, which have at their core the lighthouse and integrate-and-fire models. These allow for highly flexible modeling of realistic synaptic activity, synchronization and spatio-temporal pattern formation. The more advanced pulse-averaged equations are discussed. 25 cm. Cognitive systems - information processing meets brain science / par Morris,, Richard G.M. Publication : [S.l.] : Academic Press, 2005 . 338 p. ; , This book presents an overview of the exciting, truly multidisciplinary research by neuroscientists and systems engineers in the emerging field of cognitive systems, providing a cross-disciplinary examination of this cutting-edge area of scientific research. This is a great example of where research in very different disciplines touches to create a new emerging area of research. The book illustrates some of the technical developments that could arise from our growing understanding of how living cognitive systems behave, and the ability to use that knowledge in the design of artificial systems. This unique book is of considerable interest to researchers and students in information science, neuroscience, psychology, engineering and adjacent fields. ·́ Represents a remarkable collection of relevant experts from both the life sciences and computer science ·́ Includes state-of-the-art reviews of topics in cognitive systems from both a life sciences and a computer science perspective ·́ Discusses the impact of this research on our lives in the near future. 24 cm. Dynamic coordination in the brain from neurons to mind   Publication : Cambridge | Mass The MIT Press 2010 . 352 p. , A fundamental shift is occurring in neuroscience and related disciplines. In the past, researchers focused on functional specialization of the brain, discovering complex processing strategies based on convergence and divergence in slowly adapting anatomical architectures. Yet for the brain to cope with ever-changing and unpredictable circumstances, it needs strategies with richer interactive short-term dynamics. Recent research has revealed ways in which the brain effectively coordinates widely distributed and specialized activities to meet the needs of the moment. This book explores these findings, examining the functions, mechanisms, and manifestations of distributed dynamical coordination in the brain and mind across different species and levels of organization. The book identifies three basic functions of dynamic coordination: contextual disambiguation, dynamic grouping, and dynamic routing. It considers the role of dynamic coordination in temporally structured activity and explores these issues at different levels, from synaptic and local circuit mechanisms to macroscopic system dynamics, emphasizing their importance for cognition, behavior, and psychopathology.ContributorsEvan Balaban, Gyrgy Buzski, Nicola S. Tutorials in mathematical biosciences I : mathematical neuroscience / par Borisyuk, Alla. Publication : [S.l.] : Springer, 2005 . 170 p. ; , This volume introduces some basic theories on computational neuroscience. Chapter 1 is a brief introduction to neurons, tailored to the subsequent chapters. Chapter 2 is a self-contained introduction to dynamical systems and the bifurcation theory, oriented toward neuronal dynamics. The theory is illustrated with a model of Parkinson's disease. Chapter 3 reviews the theory of coupled neural oscillators observed ghroughout the nervous systems at all levels; it describes how oscillations arise, what pattern they take, and how they depend on excitory of inhibitory synaptic connections. Chapter 4 specializes to one particular neuronal system, namely, the auditory system. It includes a self-contained introduction, from the anatomy and physiology of the inner ear to the neuronal network which connects the hair cells to the cortex, and describes various models of subsystems. 24 cm.
