Arburg practical guide to injection moulding / par Goodship,, V. Publication : [S.l.] : Smithers Rapra Press, 2004 . 276 p. ; , This Practical Guide to Injection Moulding is based on course material used by ARBURG in training operators of injection moulding machines. It comes from many years of experience in this field and has been edited by an expert injection moulder at Warwick University. It will be of use to experts looking to fill gaps in their knowledge base and to those new to the industry. The factors involved in injection moulding, from material properties and selection to troubleshooting faults, are all examined in this book. It covers the equipment types in use and machine settings for different types of plastics. Material flow is critical in moulding and there are sections covering rheology and viscosity. High temperature can lead to poor quality mouldings due to material degradation and this is discussed. There are an exceptional number of figures in this text, with many photographs of machinery and mouldings to illustrate key points. There are also numerous tables listing key properties and processing parameters. Flow charts are included in the chapter on troubleshooting to indicate what can be changed to resolve common problems. Injection moulding in the Western World is becoming increasingly competitive as the manufacturing base for many plastics materials has moved to the East. Thus Western manufacturers have moved into more technically difficult products and mouldings to provide more added value and maintain market share. Technology is becoming more critical, together with innovation and quality control. There is a chapter on advanced processing in injection moulding covering multi-material and assisted moulding technologies. This Guide will assist progress in developing good technical skills and appropriate processing techniques for the range of plastics and products in the marketplace. 30 cm. Fire retardancy of polymers : new applications of mineral fillers.   Publication : [S.l.] : Royal Society of Chemistry, 2005 . 410 p. ; , The use of polymers is restricted by their flammability- they may indeed initiate or propagate fire. Fire Retardancy of Polymers focuses on mineral additives from either micro- or nano-composites for application in fire retardants. With the use of fire retardant additives containing halogen or phosphorus compounds in decline, the need for other systems is evident. The major materials that are used as fire retardant fillers for polymers are alumina trihydrate or magnesium hydroxide, which account for more than 50% by weight of the world-wide sales of fire retardants. Recent works have shown that such halogen-free compounds may give enhanced fire retardancy to polymeric materials when used in low levels, alone, or in synergistic mixtures, and that the corresponding fire performances depend on the dispersion of the mineral filler, micrometer-scale dispersion leading to the best performances. Specialists discuss these new applications of mineral fillers with particular emphasis on action mechanisms, new materials including textiles, toxicology, and hazards. With extensive references, this book provides a comprehensive and up-to-date view of these applications and will appeal to professionals, materials scientists, and engineers looking for novel ways to eliminate fire hazards and improve flame retardancy of materials, with a special interest in sustainable development. 24 cm. Flame retardants for plastics and textiles : practical applications par Weil, Edward. Publication : [S.l.] Hanser Publications,d2009. . 297 p. , This book gives an overview of flame retardants, which are either in commercial use or in advanced stage of market development, reviewed polymer-by-polymer, supplemented by a brief overview of mode of action and interaction. It is more of a how-to book rather than an academic study. As such, it names trademarked materials as well as products that are in an active stage of development, gives suggestions for selecting among alternatives, provides suggested formulations, and offesr a starting point for the compounder or plastics fabricator to pass commercial flammability requirements. Contents: Introduction to Flame Retardants. Overview of Mode of Action and Interaction. Polyolefins. Styrenics. PVC. Polyamides. Engineering thermoplastics. Unsaturated polyesters and Vinyl Esters. 25 cm. Disponibilité : Exemplaires disponibles: La bibliothèque des sciences de l'ingénieur (1),

Green plastics an introduction to the new science of biodegradable plastics par Stevens, E. S. Publication : new jersey Princeton University Press 2002 . 272 p. , Plastics are everywhere. Bags, bank cards, bottles, and even boats can all be made of this celebrated but much-maligned material. Yet most of us know next to nothing about plastics. We do know that they are practical and cheap--but they also represent a huge environmental problem, for they literally take ages to decompose. In this engaging book, E.S. Stevens tells us everything we have always wondered about plastics and of the efforts, in America, Europe, and Asia, to develop a new breed of environmentally friendly plastics. He points to a possible future where plastics will no longer be made of petroleum, but of plants. The first two chapters assess the increased use of plastics as a relatively new alternative to other materials. The third chapter introduces us to their impact on the environment and strategies for their disposal or recycling. The next two chapters cover basic concepts and terms used in polymer sciences and provide some basic chemistry. With these fundamentals in tow, the author compares how petroleum-based and biological polymers are made, and the various ways in which they decompose. He acquaints readers with the emerging technologies, their commercial viability, and their future. Finally, instructions are given for preparing basic bioplastics using readily available materials. Nonspecialists will find Green Plastics a concise introduction to this exciting interdisciplinary topic--an introduction otherwise not available. For students it provides easy entry to an area of science with wide appeal and current importance; for teachers, excellent background reading for courses in various sciences. The prospect of depleted fossil fuel supplies, and the potential benefits of bioplastics to the environment and to rural areas that could supply the raw materials, make this book a compelling presentation of a subject whose time has come. 24 cm. Green polymer chemistry: biocatalysis and biomaterials   Publication : [S.l.] American Chemical Society 2011 . 478 p. , Green Polymer Chemistry is a crucial area of research and product development that continues to grow in its influence over industrial practices. Developments in these areas are driven by environmental concerns, interest in sustainability, desire to decrease our dependence on petroleum, and commercial opportunities to develop "green" products. Publications and patents in these fields are increasing as more academic, industrial, and government scientists become involved in research and commercial activities. The purpose of this book is to publish new work from a cutting-edge group of leading international researchers from academia, government, and industrial institutions. Because of the multidisciplinary nature of Green Polymer Chemistry, corresponding publications tend to be spread out over numerous journals. This book brings these papers together so that the reader can gain a better appreciation of the breadth and depth of activities in Green Polymer Chemistry. It is based on contributions by oral and poster presenters at the international symposium, Biocatalysis in Polymer Science, held at the ACS National Meeting in Washington D.C. on August 17-20, 2009. Whereas many aspects of Green Polymer Chemistry were covered during the symposium, a particular emphasis was placed on biocatalysis and biobased materials. Many exciting new findings in basic research and applications were reported. In addition, several leaders in these areas who were unable to attend the symposium contributed important reviews of their ongoing work. As a result, this book provides a good representation of activities at the forefront of research in Green Polymer Chemistry emphasizing activities in biocatalysis and biobased chemistry. 24 cm.
