A Geospatial framework for the coastal zone : national needs for coastal mapping and charting / par Charting,, Committee on National Needs for Coastal Mapping and. Publication : [S.l.] : National Academies Press, 2004 . 168 p. ; , The coastal zone is of enormous importance to the well-being of the nation, as our lives and economy are inextricably linked to the features and activities that occur within this dynamic region. In order to understand and address the effects of natural and anthropogenic forces in the coastal zone, a holistic multidisciplinary framework is required to account for the interconnectivity of processes within the system. The foundation of this framework is accurate geospatial information - information that is depicted on maps and charts. "A Geospatial Framework for the Coastal Zone: National Needs" identifies and suggests mechanisms for addressing national needs for spatial information in the coastal zone. It identifies high priority needs, evaluates the potential for meeting those needs based on the current level of effort, and suggests steps to increase collaboration and ensure that the nation's need for spatial information in the coastal zone is met in an efficient and timely manner. 23 cm. Contaminants in the subsurface : source zone assessment and remediation / par Subsurface,, Committee on Source Removal of Contaminants in the. Publication : [S.l.] : National Academies Press, 2005 . 372 p. ; , At hundreds of thousands of commercial, industrial, and military sites across the country, subsurface materials including groundwater are contaminated with chemical waste. The last decade has seen growing interest in using aggressive source remediation technologies to remove contaminants from the subsurface, but there is limited understanding of: the effectiveness of these technologies; and the overall effect of mass removal on groundwater quality. This report reviews the suite of technologies available for source remediation and their ability to reach a variety of cleanup goals, from meeting regulatory standards for groundwater to reducing costs. The report proposes elements of a protocol for accomplishing source remediation that should enable project managers to decide whether and how to pursue source remediation at their sites. 23 cm. Direct and indirect human contributions to terrestrial carbon fluxes : a workshop summary / par Johnson,, Rob Coppock and Stephanie. Publication : [S.l.] : National Academies Press, 2004 . 92 p. ; , Human-induced climate change is an important environmental issue worldwide, as scientific studies increasingly demonstrate that human activities are changing the Earth's climate. Even if dramatic reductions in emissions were made today, some human-induced changes are likely to persist beyond the 21st century. The Kyoto Protocol calls for emissions reporting that separates out management-induced changes in greenhouse gases from those changes caused by indirect human effects (e.g., carbon dioxide fertilization, nitrogen deposition, or precipitation changes), natural effects, and past practices on forested agricultural lands. This book summarizes a September 2003 workshop where leaders from academia, government and industry came together to discuss the current state of scientific understanding on quantifying direct human-induced change in terrestrial carbon stocks and related changes in greenhouse gas emissions and distinguishing these changes from those caused by indirect and natural effects. 23 cm. Groundwater fluxes across interfaces / par Science,, Committee on Hydrologic. Publication : [S.l.] : National Academies Press, 2004 . 100 p. ; , Estimates of groundwater recharge and discharge rates are needed at many different scales for many different purposes. These include such tasks as evaluating landslide risks, managing groundwater resources, locating nuclear waste repositories, and estimating global budgets of water and greenhouse gasses. "Groundwater Fluxes Across Interfaces" focuses on scientific challenges in: the spatial and temporal variability of recharge and discharge; how information at one scale can be used at another; and the effects of groundwater on climate and vice versa. 28 cm.
