Biology of the ubiquitous house sparrow : from genes to populations / par Anderson,, Ted R. Publication : [S.l.] : Oxford University Press, USA, 2006 . 560 p. ; , After the chicken, the House Sparrow is the most widely distributed bird species in the world, occurring on all continents except Antarctica and on most human-inhabited islands. Although its Latin name is Passer domesticus, it is certainly not domesticated. In fact, it is widely regarded as a pest species and is consequently not protected in most of its extensive range. This combination of ubiquity and minimal legal protection has contributed to its wide use in studies by avian biologists throughout the world. The purpose of this book is to review and summarize the results of these global studies on House Sparrows, and to provide a springboard for future studies on the species. House Sparrows have been used to study natural selection in introduced species, circadian rhythms, and the neuroendocrine control of the avian annual cycle. One current question of considerable interest concerns the catastrophic House Sparrow population declines in several urban centers in Europe. Is the House Sparrow a contemporary canary in the mine? Other topics of broad interest include the reproductive and flock-foraging strategies of sparrows, and sexual selection and the function of the male badge in the species. Anderson also explores the role of the House Sparrow in disease transmission to humans and their domesticated animals. 24 cm. Ecology and behaviour of mesozoic reptiles / par Cloudsley-Thompson, John L. Publication : [S.l.] : Springer, 2005 . 219 p. ; , Our knowledge of extinct animals depends almost entirely upon the study of fossils. This richly illustrated book clothes the skeletons of dinosaurs and other Mesozoic reptiles with flesh, and shows how these fascinating animals evolved and probably lived. Expert author John L. Cloudsley-Thompson provides an interesting synthesis of current views on their ecology, physiology and behaviour, and outlines the various hypotheses that have been proposed to explain their extinction. Numerous beautiful drawings of the animals and their environment illustrate this exciting monograph. 24 cm. Experimental and surgical techniques in the rat, second edition / par Waynforth, H. B. Publication : [S.l.] : Academic Press, 1992 . 382 p. ; , The publication of this Second Edition, twelve years after the first, attests to the timelessness of the techniques used in experimental work with the rat. However, scientific progress inevitably brings to light new ideas and procedures. In particular, considerable progress has been made in the use of new anesthetics and analgesics. A completely new chapter has been written on these with unique emphasis on the applicability to the rat. The very variable standards of surgery that existed in the past are placed in perspective in another new chapter, which makes recommendations more in keeping with the higher standards now demanded of animal experimentation. A variety of new techniques have been added throughout to expand the usefulness of the book, and more illustrations have been added to help in the execution of the various procedures. One of the greatest advances in the last twelve years is a greater appreciation for the well-being of experimental animals, and references to a more humane and refined approach have been made throughout this edition. This greater awareness of welfare issues demands that experimental animals be handled and used correctly and compassionately, with as little suffering as possible, and has led to a marked improvement in the attitude to proper training. This book is still the only source which provides a detailed and up-to-date compilation of illustrated experimental methods for work with the rat. It will continue to be an invaluable reference to specific information for laboratory workers and will help considerably in training new investigators in the proper and considerate use of this species. Key Features * All surgical techniques have been revised and updated * A new section on anesthesia and post-operative care has been included * Presents new techniques, particularly cannulation. 24 cm. Living on an active earth : perspectives on earthquake science / par Earthquakes,, Committee on the Science of. Publication : [S.l.] : National Academies Press, 2003 . 432 p. ; , The destructive force of earthquakes has stimulated human inquiry since ancient times, yet the scientific study of earthquakes is a surprisingly recent endeavor. Instrumental recordings of earthquakes were not made until the second half of the 19th century, and the primary mechanism for generating seismic waves was not identified until the beginning of the 20th century. From this recent start, a range of laboratory, field, and theoretical investigations have developed into a vigorous new discipline: the science of earthquakes. As a basic science, it provides a comprehensive understanding of earthquake behavior and related phenomena in the Earth and other terrestrial planets. As an applied science, it provides a knowledge base of great practical value for a global society whose infrastructure is built on the Earth's active crust. This book describes the growth and origins of earthquake science and identifies research and data collection efforts that will strengthen the scientific and social contributions of this exciting new discipline. 24 cm. Plant biochemistry par Heldt, Hans-Walter. Publication : [S.l.] Academic Press 2005 . 630 p. , This fully revised translation of the world-renowned German edition covers the complete and modern knowledge of plant biochemistry. The book presents the topic in a concise and simplified manner so that students can digest the message and gain a basic knowledge of the entire field of plant biochemistry, from photosynthesis (the synthesis of natural plant products) to all kinds of genetic engineering with its many commercial applications. Topics include cell structure and function, lipid and polysaccharide metabolism, nitrogen fixation, phloem transport, synthesis and function of isoprenoids, phenylpropanoids and other secondary metabolites, plant growth regulation and development. Heldt provides a comprehensive description of photosynthesis, primary and secondary metabolism, the function of phytohormones and molecular engineering. The text covers research findings until the end of 2003 and identifies areas of future research. There are extensive references to the most recent scientific literature. * Illustrated with two-color diagrams and well designed metabolic schemes * Plant metabolism presented in the context of the structure and function of the plant * Many examples of commercial applications for the protection and quality improvement of harvest crops, plant breeding, and the production of raw materials for industrial use * Coverage of the latest research findings. 27 cm. Tutorials in mathematical biosciences I : mathematical neuroscience / par Borisyuk, Alla. Publication : [S.l.] : Springer, 2005 . 170 p. ; , This volume introduces some basic theories on computational neuroscience. Chapter 1 is a brief introduction to neurons, tailored to the subsequent chapters. Chapter 2 is a self-contained introduction to dynamical systems and the bifurcation theory, oriented toward neuronal dynamics. The theory is illustrated with a model of Parkinson's disease. Chapter 3 reviews the theory of coupled neural oscillators observed ghroughout the nervous systems at all levels; it describes how oscillations arise, what pattern they take, and how they depend on excitory of inhibitory synaptic connections. Chapter 4 specializes to one particular neuronal system, namely, the auditory system. It includes a self-contained introduction, from the anatomy and physiology of the inner ear to the neuronal network which connects the hair cells to the cortex, and describes various models of subsystems. 24 cm.
