Analysis of complex disease association studies a practical guide   Publication : [S.l.] Academic Press 2010 . 340 p. , According to the National Institute of Health, a genome-wide association study is defined as any study of genetic variation across the entire human genome that is designed to identify genetic associations with observable traits (such as blood pressure or weight), or the presence or absence of a disease or condition. Whole genome information, when combined with clinical and other phenotype data, offers the potential for increased understanding of basic biological processes affecting human health, improvement in the prediction of disease and patient care, and ultimately the realization of the promise of personalized medicine. In addition, rapid advances in understanding the patterns of human genetic variation and maturing high-throughput, cost-effective methods for genotyping are providing powerful research tools for identifying genetic variants that contribute to health and disease. (good paragraph) This burgeoning science merges the principles of statistics and genetics studies to make sense of the vast amounts of information available with the mapping of genomes. In order to make the most of the information available, statistical tools must be tailored and translated for the analytical issues which are original to large-scale association studies. This book will provide researchers with advanced biological knowledge who are entering the field of genome-wide association studies with the groundwork to apply statistical analysis tools appropriately and effectively. With the use of consistent examples throughout the work, chapters will provide readers with best practice for getting started (design), analyzing, and interpreting data according to their research interests. Frequently used tests will be highlighted and a critical analysis of the advantages and disadvantage complimented by case studies for each will provide readers with the information they need to make the right choice for their research. Additional tools including links to analysis tools, tutorials, and references will be available electronically to ensure the latest information is available. * Easy access to key information including advantages and disadvantage of tests for particular applications, identification of databases, languages and their capabilities, data management risks, frequently used tests * Extensive list of references including links to tutorial websites * Case studies and Tips and Tricks. 24 cm. Applied partial differential equations An introduction par Jeffrey, Alan Publication : California | London | Burlington Academic Press 2003 . xiv, 394 p. , This book is written to meet the needs of undergraduates in applied mathematics, physics and engineering studying partial differential equations. It is a more modern, comprehensive treatment intended for students who need more than the purely numerical solutions provided by programs like the MATLAB PDE Toolbox, and those obtained by the method of separation of variables, which is usually the only theoretical approach found in the majority of elementary textbooks. This will fill a need in the market for a more modern text for future working engineers, and one that students can read and understand much more easily than those currently on the market. * Includes new and important materials necessary to meet current demands made by diverse applications * Very detailed solutions to odd numbered problems to help students * Instructor's Manual Available. 23 cm. Arthropod collection and identification : laboratory and field techniques par Gibb, TimothyJ. Publication : [S.l.] Academic Press 2006 . 311 p. , Arthropods are the most numerous and diverse group of animals and studying them requires the use of specialized equipment and specific procedures. This text describes effective methods and equipment for collecting, identifying, rearing, examining, and preserving insects and mites, and explains how to store and care for specimens in collections. It also provides instructions for the construction of many kinds of collecting equipment, traps, rearing cages, and storage units, as well as updated and illustrated keys for identification of the classes of arthropods and the orders of insects. Such information not only aids hobbyists and professionals in preparing insect collections, but it has become essential in documenting and standardizing collections of entomological evidence in forensic as well as pest management sciences. * Over 400 professionally drawn illustrations * Identification keys to find arthropod orders * Comprehensive reading list * Detailed glossary of terms. 22 cm. Atlas of the human brain, third edition par Mai, Juergen K. Publication : [S.l.] Academic Press 2007 . 280 p. , High-resolution human imaging requires a high-resolution atlas. There is no atlas that approaches the accuracy and comprehensiveness of The Atlas of the Human Brain . This is the third, thoroughly revised, edition of the very successful atlas that received the Award of Excellence from the American Association of Publishers. Constructed by the recognized leaders in brain cartography, the atlas provides the most detailed and accurate delineations of brain structure available. It is intended as an atlas for day-to-day use in the research laboratory to identify macroscopic and microscopic structures in the human brain as collected in research data with a variety of methods. It will also be particularly useful for the interpretation of magnetic resonance imaging data. The atlas includes a DVD with not only the atlas in electronic format, providing electronic versions of drawings and photographs to facilitate use of atlas contents with researchers' own material, but also 3D visualisation software that allows easy browsing of the images, and a feature to allow direct retrieval of brain areas using coordinates obtained in magnetic resonance imaging. * Brain structures are presented in the standard Talairach and Tournoux stereotaxic space * DVD contains MRI-Navigator (3D visualization of MR images), BrainNavigator (3D navigation through the detailed coronal atlas in PART 2) allowing the neuroimaging community to dial in the coordinates of their activation focus and find out what area of the brain the activation occurs in * Significantly larger trim size (14 x 11 inches) providing much higher detail in the print graphics and photographs. 36 cm. Atmosphere, ocean and climate dynamics : an introductory text par Marshall, John. Publication : [S.l.] Elsevier Academic Press 2008 . 319 p. , For advanced undergraduate and beginning graduate students in atmospheric, oceanic, and climate science, Atmosphere, Ocean and Climate Dynamics is an introductory textbook on the circulations of the atmosphere and ocean and their interaction, with an emphasis on global scales. It will give students a good grasp of what the atmosphere and oceans look like on the large-scale and why they look that way. The role of the oceans in climate and paleoclimate is also discussed. The combination of observations, theory and accompanying illustrative laboratory experiments sets this text apart by making it accessible to students with no prior training in meteorology or oceanography. * Written at a mathematical level that is appealing for undergraduates and beginning graduate students * Provides a useful educational tool through a combination of observations and laboratory demonstrations which can be viewed over the web * Contains instructions on how to reproduce the simple but informative laboratory experiments * Includes copious problems (with sample answers) to help students learn the material. 29 cm.
