Biofuels : securing the planet's future energy needs par Demirbas, Ayhan. Publication : [S.l.] Springer 2010 . 336 p. , Biofuel is a renewable energy source produced from natural materials. The benefits of biofuels over traditional petroleum fuels include greater energy security, reduced environmental impact, foreign exchange savings, and socioeconomic issues related to the rural sector. The most common biofuels are produced from classic food crops that require high-quality agricultural land for growth. However, bioethanol can be produced from plentiful, domestic, cellulosic biomass resources such as herbaceous and woody plants, agricultural and forestry residues, and a large portion of municipal and industrial solid waste streams. There is also a growing interest in the use of vegetable oils for making biodiesel. “Biofuels: Securing the Planet’s Future Energy Needs” discusses the production of transportation fuels from biomass (such as wood, straw and even household waste) by Fischer-Tropsch synthesis. The book is an important text for students and researchers in energy engineering, as well as professional fuel engineers. 24 cm. Biofuels and bioenergy : processes and technologies / par Lee, Sunggyu. Publication : Boca Raton, FL : Taylor and Francis , 2012 . xvii, 323 pages : , "Preface Humans have a long history of using a wide variety of biomass resources as sources of energy and fuel. The discovery and use of fossil energy, represented largely by coal, natural gas, and petroleum, have drastically reduced the utilization of biomass fuels. The technologies of generating electricity using biomass, producing bioliquid fuels, and powering motor vehicles using bioalcohols and blended gasolines have been developed and practiced since the early twentieth century. Up until recently, however, development interest in biofuels had lessened due to the availability of relatively inexpensive fossil energy resources as well as the handling and transportation convenience of these conventional fuel sources. Due to the strong growth of global transportation fuel demand, sharply escalating worldwide fossil energy prices, fear over the dwindling supply of petroleum and natural gas for the near future, and credible evidence linking global warming and climate change issues with the emission of greenhouse gases, global interest and R&D efforts in renewable alternative fuels have become intense and fiercely competitive, targeting both short- and long-term solutions to alternative energy needs. Although there are a number of options and routes for energy sustainability and independence via renewable alternative energy, bioenergy and biofuels certainly possess outstanding potential to provide solutions and relief to many of the immediate, intermediate, and long-term societal needs of clean energy and their associated challenges"-- 25 cm. Biohydrogen for future engine fuel demands par Demirbas, Ayhan. Publication : London Springer 2009 . xii, 275 pages , "The modern world is facing three critical problems: high fuel prices, climate change, and air pollution. Biohydrogen: For Future Demands covers the production, purification, storage, pipeline transport, usage, and safety of biohydrogen. Hydrogen promises to be the most significant fuel source of the future, due to its global availability and the fact that water is its only by-product. Biofuels such as bioethanol, biodiesel, bio-oil, and biohydrogen are produced using technologies for thermochemically and biologically converting biomass. Hydrogen fuel production technologies can make use of either non-renewable sources, or renewable sources such as wind, solar, and biorenewable resources." "Biohydrogen: For Future Fuel Demands reviews all of the modern biomass-based transportation fuels, including bioethanol, biodiesel, biogas, biohydrogen, and fuel cells. The book also discusses issues of biohydrogen economy, policy, and environmental impact."--MONO JACKET. 25 cm. Biologically inspired robotics   Publication : Boca Raton, FL Taylor and Francis/CRC Press 2012 . xv, 324 pages , "Based on a selection of presentations from the 2009 IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Biomimetics, this reference presents cutting-edge research in the field. The 16 chapters, rewritten to include extra detail and analysis, cover robotic design, micro/nano robots for bio-systems and biomedicine, and biological measurement and actuation. A section on cybernetics is also included. Written for graduate students and researchers in control engineering and robotics, this text helps readers understand research trends, future development of bio-robotics, and biologically inspired robot design. It includes a wealth of figures and hundreds of equations"-- | "Biologically inspired robotics is an interdisciplinary subject between robotics and biology that involves how to apply biological ideas and phenomena to engineering problems in robotics (biomimetics), and how to apply robotics technology to understanding of biological systems and their behaviors (bio-robotic modeling/analysis). The efforts in biologically inspired robotics are not just restricted to research work in laboratories, their novel applications are also being extensively explored in services, education, rehabilitation, medical care and other sectors. The objective of this book is to introduce the latest efforts in research of biologically inspired robotics, covering both biomimetics (with chapters in biologically inspired robot design and control, bio-sensing, bio-actuation, and micro/nano bio-robotic systems) and bio-robotic modeling/analysis (discussing human hand motion recognition using biological signals, modeling of human brain activities, characterization of cell properties using robotic systems). In order to provide readers a better understanding on organization of this book, the content is classified into four parts: (1) biologically inspired robot design and control, (2) micro/nano bio-robotic systems, (3) biological measurement and actuation, and (4) applications of robotics technology to biological problems"-- 24 cm.
