Microbial biosorption of metals   Publication : [S.l.] Springer 2011 . 329 p. , Heavy metals always pose serious ecological risks when released into the environment due to their elemental non-degradable nature, regardless of their chemical form. This calls for the development of efficient and low-cost effluent treatment and metal recuperation technologies for contaminated waste water, not only because regulatory limits need to be met but also because the waste itself can be a resource for certain precious metals.   Biosorption is a general property of living and dead biomass to rapidly bind and abiotically concentrate inorganic or organic compounds from even very diluted aqueous solutions. As a specific term, biosorption is a method that utilizes materials of biological origin – biosorbents formulated from non-living biomass - for the removal of target substances from aqueous solutions. Recent research on biosorption provides a solid understanding of the mechanism underlying microbial biosorption of heavy metals and related elements.   This book gathers review articles analyzing current views on the mechanism and (bio)chemistry of biosorption,  the performance of bacterial, fungal and algal biomass, and the practical aspects of biosorbent preparation and engineering.  It also reviews the physico-chemical evaluations of biosorbents and modelling of the process as well as the importance of biosorption during heavy metal removal using living cells. It is a reference work for scientists, environmental safety engineers and R&D specialists who wish to further promote biosorption research and use the accumulated knowledge to develop and build industrial applications of biosorption in heavy metal separation technologies.   24 cm. Modern industrial microbiology and biotechnology / par Okafor, Nduka. Publication : Enfield, (NH) : Science Publishers, 2007 . xx, 530 pages : , This book is directed towards undergraduates and beginning graduate students in microbiology, food science and chemical engineering. Those studying pharmacy, biochemistry and general biology will find it of interest. The section on waste disposal will be of interest to civil engineering and public health students and practitioners. For the benefit of those students who may be unfamiliar with the basic biological assumptions underlying industrial microbiology, such as students of chemical and civil engineering, elements of biology and microbiology are introduced. The new elements which have necessitated the shift in paradigm in industrial microbiology such as bioinformatics, genomics, proteomics, site-directed mutation, metabolic engineering, the human genome project and others are also introduced and their relevance to industrial microbiology and biotechnology indicated. As many references as space will permit are included. The various applications of industrial microbiology are covered broadly, and the chapters are grouped to reflect these applications. The emphasis throughout, however, is on the physiological, biochemical principles, and where possible, the genomic principles behind these applications. 25 cm. Molecular biotechnology : principles and applications of recombinant DNA par Glick, Bernard R. Publication : [S.l.] 2010 . 1000 p. , Acclaimed by students and instructors, Molecular Biotechnology: Principles and Applications of Recombinant DNA is now in its fourth edition, bringing it thoroughly up to date with the latest findings and the latest industrial, agricultural, pharmaceutical, and biomedical applications. At the same time, the text maintains all the hallmarks that have made it a bestseller. These include its straightforward, jargon-free writing style and its extensive use of figures that help students make sense of complex biological systems and processes. These features not only enable students to grasp core concepts, but also create the foundation needed to support their own research and development work using recombinant DNA technology. This fourth edition features greatly expanded coverage of the latest innovations in DNA sequencing techniques, therapeutics, vaccines, transgenic plants, and transgenic animals. Moreover, readers will find nearly 240 new figures to help them grasp all the latest concepts and applications. With its broad range of topics, Molecular Biotechnology is adaptable to different upper-level undergraduate and graduate courses emphasizing particular aspects of modern biotechnology. For example, instructors can easily tailor the content to courses focusing on the fundamentals of biotechnology as well as courses dedicated to medical, agricultural, environmental, or industrial applications. Key Features * New edition presents 645 figures and 113 tables throughout the text, hundreds of which illustrate complex systems and processes * Chapter summaries highlighting key points * References to the literature in each chapter facilitating detailed investigations of all topics covered in the text * End-of-chapter review questions enabling students to assess their knowledge * Updated examples illustrating the latest concepts and applications. 33 cm. Molecular diagnostics : current technology and applications / par Rao,, Juluri R. Publication : [S.l.] : Taylor & Francis, 2006 . 400 p. ; , Molecular techniques are being harnessed for the detection of organisms in a wide range of circumstances. Global trade has introduced new pests of crops and plants; simultaneously, there is universal concern from disease outbreaks such as BSE, Foot & Mouth and the dreaded bird-flu virus. Molecular diagnostic applications for the detection of foodborne bacterial pathogens and genetically modified organisms in food are also becoming increasingly important. This book provides a critical assessment of the various molecular methods in medical and veterinary science, forensics, biodefense, plant science, food safety and quarantine sciences. Aimed at a wide range of end-users encompassing postgraduates, postdoctoral research scientists, established researchers and specialist scientists, the authors describe and evaluate molecular techniques and applications in this increasingly important area. Topics include the molecular methods for the direct detection of pathogens such as E. coli O157:H7, MRSA and other important bacterial infections, medical viruses, medical parasites, dental plaque bacteria and haematological malignancies. Also covered is the molecular recognition and detection of catastrophic bio-threat agents as a consequence of global terrorism. 24 cm.
