Based on our knowledge of the functioning human brain, ANNs serve as a modern paradigm for computing. Presenting basic principles of ANNs together with simulated biological and environmental data sets and real applications in the field, this volume helps scientists comprehend the power of the ANN model to explain physical concepts and demonstrate complex natural processes"--Provided by publisher. | "The cornerstones of research into prospective tools of artificial intelligence originate from knowledge of the functioning brain. Like most transforming scientific endeavors, this field-- once viewed with speculation and doubt--has had profound impacts in helping investigators elucidate complex biological, chemical, and environmental processes. Such efforts have been catalyzed by the upsurge in computational power and availability, with the co-evolution of software, algorithms, and methodologies contributing significantly to this momentum. Whether or not the computational power of such techniques is sufficient for the design and construction of truly intelligent neural systems is of continued debate. In writing Artificial Neural Networks in Biological and Environmental Analysis, my aim was to provide in-depth and timely perspectives on the fundamental, technological, and applied aspects of computational neural networks. By presenting basic principles of neural networks together with real applications in the field, I seek to stimulate communication and partnership among scientists in the fields as diverse as biology, chemistry, mathematics, medicine, and environmental science. This interdisciplinary discourse is essential not only for the success of independent and collaborative research and teaching programs, but also for the continued acquiescence of the use of neural network tools in scientific inquiry"--Provided by publisher. 25 cm. Electroactive polymer gel robots modelling and control of artificial muscles par Otake, Mihoko Publication : [S.l.] Springer 2010 . 238 p. , The monograph written by Mihoko Otake combines ideas from chemistry and physics, material science and engineering for the revolutionary development of the so-called gel robots. Electroactive polymers are introduced to build new types of muscular-like actuation for deformable robots. The coverage spans from modelling and design to the development, control and experimental testing. A number of methods are proposed for describing the shapes and motions of such systems. The results are demonstrated for beam-shaped gels curling around an object and starfish-shaped gel robots turning over. 24 cm. Emotion-oriented systems : the humaine handbook   Publication : [S.l.] Springer 2011 . 820 p. , Emotion pervades human life in general, and human communication in particular, and this sets information technology a challenge. Traditionally, IT has focused on allowing people to accomplish practical tasks efficiently, setting emotion to one side. That was acceptable when technology was a small part of life, but as technology and life become increasingly interwoven we can no longer ask people to suspend their emotional nature and habits when they interact with technology. The European Commission funded a series of related research projects on emotion and computing, culminating in the HUMAINE project which brought together leading academic researchers from the many related disciplines. This book grew out of that project, and its chapters are arranged according to its working areas: theories and models; signals to signs; data and databases; emotion in interaction; emotion in cognition and action; persuasion and communication; usability; and ethics and good practice. The fundamental aim of the book is to offer researchers an overview of the related areas, sufficient for them to do credible work on affective or emotion-oriented computing. The book serves as an academically sound introduction to the range of disciplines involved – technical, empirical and conceptual – and will be of value to researchers in the areas of artificial intelligence, psychology, cognition and user—machine interaction. 25 cm. MODAL ARRAY SIGNAL PROCESSING : PRINCIPLES AND APPLICATIONS OF ACOUSTIC WAVEFIELD DECOMPOSITION / par Teutsch, Heinz. Publication : [S.l.] : Springer, 2007 . 253 p. ; , Many applications of acoustic signal processing, such as teleconferencing and surveillance systems, require an estimate of several parameters present in the observed acoustic wavefield. The most important parameters are the number as well as the location of active acoustic sources. This book deals with the problem of detecting and localizing multiple simultaneously active wideband acoustic sources by applying the notion of wavefield decomposition using circular and spherical microphone arrays. The decomposed wavefield representation is used to serve as a basis for so-called modal array signal processing algorithms, which have the significant advantage over classical array signal processing algorithms that they inherently support multiple wideband acoustic sources. A rigorous derivation of modal array signal processing algorithms for unambiguous source detection and localization as well as performance evaluations by means of measurements using an actual real-time capable implementation are discussed. 24 cm.
