Earthquake resistant design and risk reduction par Dowrick, David J. Publication : [S.l.] Wiley 2009 . 548 p. , Earthquake Resistant Design and Risk Reduction, 2 nd edition is based upon global research and development work over the last 50 years or more, and follows the author’s series of three books Earthquake Resistant Design , 1st and 2 nd editions (1977 and 1987), and Earthquake Risk Reduction (2003). Many advances have been made since the 2003 edition of Earthquake Risk Reduction , and there is every sign that this rate of progress will continue apace in the years to come. Compiled from the author’s wide design and research experience in earthquake engineering and engineering seismology, this key text provides an excellent treatment of the complex multidisciplinary process of earthquake resistant design and risk reduction. New topics include the creation of low-damage structures and the spatial distribution of ground shaking near large fault ruptures. Sections on guidance for developing countries, response of buildings to differential settlement in liquefaction, performance-based and displacement-based design and the architectural aspects of earthquake resistant design are heavily revised.  This book: Outlines individual national weaknesses that contribute to earthquake risk to people and property Calculates the seismic response of soils and structures, using the structural continuum “Subsoil – Substructure – Superstructure – Non–structure” Evaluates the effectiveness of given design and construction procedures for reducing casualties and financial losses Provides guidance on the key issue of choice of structural form Presents earthquake resistant design methods for the main four structural materials – steel, concrete, reinforced masonry and timber – as well as for services equipment, plant and non-structural architectural components Contains a chapter devoted to problems involved in improving (retrofitting) the existing built environment This book is an invaluable reference and guiding tool to practising civil and structural engineers and architects, researchers and postgraduate students in earthquake engineering and engineering seismology, local governments and risk management officials.  25 cm. Efficiency and sustainability in the energy and chemical industries : scientific principles and case studies par Sankaranarayanan, Krishnan. Publication : [S.l.] CRC Press 2010 . 369 p. , Using classic thermodynamic principles as the point of departure, this new edition of a popular resource supplies the understanding and tools required to measure process efficiency and sustainability with much improved accuracy. Exploring the driving forces in the chemical and power industries, Efficiency and Sustainability in the Energy and Chemical Industries: Scientific Principles and Case Studies, Second Edition investigates why losses occur and explains how to reduce such losses. Numerous case studies, examples, and problems illustrate the thermodynamic analysis of process performance to explain how to effectively analyze and optimize work flows and environmental resources. The authors compare the present industrial society with an emerging one in which mass production and consumption are in harmony with the natural environment through closure of material cycles . In this second edition, the book’s structure of Basics, Thermodynamic Analysis of Processes, Case Studies , and Sustainability has been unaffected, but a few additions have been made. New and updated information includes: A new chapter dedicated to the increasing levels of CO 2 emissions, with special attention to the removal and storage of CO 2 A new chapter on the rapidly emerging hydrogen economy An extended chapter on lifecycle analysis that examines the fate of the quality of energy during the lifecycle Increased focus on integrating the environment into the thermodynamic analysis of the systems or processes considered New problem sets and exercises Complete with the keys to a quantification of process efficiency and sustainability, this cutting-edge resource is the ideal guide for those engaged in the transition from fossil-based fuels to renewable and sustainable energy sources using low-waste procedures. 24 cm. Electrical engineering materials par Karki,, Nava Raj. Publication : [S.l.] Alpha Science Int'l Ltd 2007 . 250 p. , "Electrical Engineering Materials" covers the area of quantum mechanics that leads to the understanding of electrical behaviour of materials. The classification of material is based on energy band structure. This book clarifies that the conductivity of material is determined by mobile charge carrier concentration and drift mobility and the reasons for higher conductivity in metals and lower conductivity in semiconductors. The book also covers dielectric materials: polarization mechanism, temperature and frequency dependence, piezoelectricity and ferroelectricity. Starting from the elementary concepts associated with magnetism and latest developments in magnetic materials, it explains the concept of semiconducting material, their characteristics and formation of p- and n-type semiconductors. Similarly, the behaviour of pn junction under different bais voltages are described as also the principle of semiconductor material fabrication, purification of Si, doping mechanisms, the device fabrication along with different aspects associated with superconductivity, types of superconducting materials with update on latest development in the field of superconductivity. 25 cm. Electroactive polymer gel robots modelling and control of artificial muscles par Otake, Mihoko Publication : [S.l.] Springer 2010 . 238 p. , The monograph written by Mihoko Otake combines ideas from chemistry and physics, material science and engineering for the revolutionary development of the so-called gel robots. Electroactive polymers are introduced to build new types of muscular-like actuation for deformable robots. The coverage spans from modelling and design to the development, control and experimental testing. A number of methods are proposed for describing the shapes and motions of such systems. The results are demonstrated for beam-shaped gels curling around an object and starfish-shaped gel robots turning over. 24 cm. Electromagnetic field computation by network methods par Felsen,, Leopold B. Publication : [S.l.] Springer 2009 . 228 p. , In this monograph, the authors propose a systematic and rigorous treatment of electromagnetic field representations in complex structures. The architecture suggested in this book accommodates use of different numerical methods as well as alternative Green's function representations in each of the subdomains resulting from a partitioning of the overall problem. The subdomains are regions of space where electromagnetic energy is stored and are described in terms of equivalent circuit representations based either on lumped element circuits or on transmission lines. Connection networks connect the subcircuits representing the subdomains. The connection networks are lossless, don't store energy and represent the overall problem topology. This is similar to what is done in circuit theory and permits a phrasing of the solution of EM field problems in complex structures by Network-oriented methods. 24 cm. Electromagnetic field theory for engineers and physicists par Lehner, Günther. Publication : [S.l.] Springer 2010 . 659 p. , Discussed is the electromagnetic field theory and its mathematical methods. Maxwell’s equations are presented and explained. It follows a detailed discussion of electrostatics, flux, magnetostatics, quasi stationary fields and electromagnetic fields. The author presents how to apply numerical methods like finite differences, finite elements, boundary elements, image charge methods, and Monte-Carlo methods to field theory problems. He offers an outlook on fundamental issues in physics including quantum mechanics. Some of these issues are still unanswered questions. A chapter dedicated to the theory of special relativity, which allows to simplify a number of field theory problems, complements this book. A book whose usefulness is not limited to engineering students, but can be very helpful for physicists and other branches of science. 25 cm. Emotion-oriented systems : the humaine handbook   Publication : [S.l.] Springer 2011 . 820 p. , Emotion pervades human life in general, and human communication in particular, and this sets information technology a challenge. Traditionally, IT has focused on allowing people to accomplish practical tasks efficiently, setting emotion to one side. That was acceptable when technology was a small part of life, but as technology and life become increasingly interwoven we can no longer ask people to suspend their emotional nature and habits when they interact with technology. The European Commission funded a series of related research projects on emotion and computing, culminating in the HUMAINE project which brought together leading academic researchers from the many related disciplines. This book grew out of that project, and its chapters are arranged according to its working areas: theories and models; signals to signs; data and databases; emotion in interaction; emotion in cognition and action; persuasion and communication; usability; and ethics and good practice. The fundamental aim of the book is to offer researchers an overview of the related areas, sufficient for them to do credible work on affective or emotion-oriented computing. The book serves as an academically sound introduction to the range of disciplines involved – technical, empirical and conceptual – and will be of value to researchers in the areas of artificial intelligence, psychology, cognition and user—machine interaction. 25 cm.
